    YES. Ida B. Wells is always my favorite person to promote when people talk about african americans, women or suffragists.

    I used to work for the department head at a somewhat well-known university. This man, in addition to being a narcissist, enjoyed demeaning and intimidating women, and I was at a particularly vulnerable place in my life. My 13 year old daughter, ever my champion and defender, knew how upset this man made me. So, she used to edit his Wikipedia page (he was also a research scientist of some notoriety). She kept writing that, in addition to his many degrees, accolades, and achievements, he was also frequently constipated.
    Her edits kept getting removed, but she kept adding her comments back, until she eventually became tired of the game. It tickles me to think about the look on his face when he kept reading and changing her edits. It proves what a narcissist he was because he was obviously monitoring his own Wikipedia page almost daily. As his secretary, he didn't have me do it. I'm sure he didn't trust me with such an important task.

    So true, I did a wonderful internet course on on American black women in the civil rights movement, from the University of Maryland. I was so enlightened and learned so much about Ida and other brave women and how they faced unbelievable cruelty. Makes the suffragettes look like they were out for a romp in the park and we know what terrible treatment they had. So ladies if you are feeling in need of inspiration, history is full of them in all walks of life..over to you Sandi keep up the good work!

    Where's Ida's movie, then? Instead of remaking yet another 80's flick, let's get a few of these overlooked heroines on screen!

    Would-be Wikipedia editors should check out the Women in Red project. As well as hosting huge lists of needed articles, it also serves as an information hub for other activites related to articles on women. You can access it by typing WP:WOMRED in the search box.

    I would recommend the book To Tell the Truth Freely: The Life of Ida B. Wells by Mia Bay. The paperback edition is still in print, I believe, and this is a highly regarded biography of Wells.

    I just had a look on Goodreads, and there are two books BY Ida B Wells we should all get our hands on! Ones her diary!! The other is a collection of her works (maybe includes her diary?)
    Some books about her too, if anyone here has read any please recommend!

    I have only once contributed anything to wikipedia. I made a comment in the ridiculous discussion after Philip Coppens died & there was discussion whether his creativity & writings merited anything 'real'. Pointed out that unless we're taking out the page on Santa, even though he's clearly a macroscopic quantum object, and reviewing why there were (at that point) over 202 articles on women who have been 'playmate of the year' and at that point only 4 had other 'notable works' to their name, then perhaps we should leave off. Have never managed to work out how to add something new in there. I've often wanted to add something on my mentor, who is an amazing woman of colour who consistently achieves in our field against massive odds, but then I think how likely it is it would be taken down and somehow I don't get to learning how to do it.

    Wikipedia editors tend to delete articles about women because the women are thought “not significant” watch any page you create to make sure it is not suppressed!

    • @nzd3742
      @nzd3742 4 роки тому

      I would definitely recommend that people check the relevent eligibility critera before trying to create a new article. WP:NOTABILITY has all the information, but in general, you'll need to demonstrate that there's a decent amount of information about the subject in reliable, independent sources.

    The Ida B. Wells complex in Chicago was a terrible place to live. But it's gone. She shouldn't be. That her name was important enough to put on those buildings means there are people who know. But I doubt they are watching this. This is great, you may have given some teachers somewhere a very productive way to take a short break showing your videos.

    How ironic that I can't find Sandi's name in the video description. I want to recommend her and her videos to a group I'm part of and I don't know her last name. I'll find it of course, but shouldn't it feature on her videos?
