- We are EXCITED! Oliver, our Clydesdale stallion we rescued earlier this past spring (2023) has come such a long way in his recovery journey! He is finally ready to start in a harness and learn to pull a cart! We head out to take a look at the setup we found for him. With Oliver being our first draft horse we have a lot to learn! But thankfully, the lady selling the harness and cart has offered to teach us a bit and give a lesson on harnessing plus fit the harness to Oliver. Come along for the fun!
Oliver, the Clydesdale auction horse has had quite the journey!!! Make sure to watch his other videos to catch up on everything! This is where his story begins • Oliver's Auction - Fir...

We can never get enough of Oliver's video. He's such a gentle horse, patient, quiet, and stands majestic. Loves JR. As with all the animals, large and small. Homestead horsemanship is a great loving home. Thank you, and God bless.
For a stallion of only 2 years old, Oliver is so amazingly good natured! ❤❤❤
He's being such a good boy!!!!! As long as JR is right next to him, he's ok with the world!! What a great relationship they have.
Oliver was so well behaved throughout this whole process. A totally new process. He’s a good boy. And treats don’t hurt either.
Hello JR and family -- Loved this informative video. The woman who sold you the harness was really generous with her knowledge of the harness and how to fit it to Oliver properly -- thank goodness, right? JR -- your discussion at the end of the video regarding Oliver having a purpose -- the importance of his interaction with you -- and how those things add immeasurably to the quality of his life -- so smart -- so logical. I happen to agree with those concepts -- but for anyone who had not agreed -- the examples you cited with the 'purpose' of various dog breeds drove the point home convincingly. Your prioritizing of Oliver's health care is made clear in the fact that he is examined by both a veterinarian and chiropractors. I've said it before -- that perhaps the reason Homestead Horsemanship is one of my favorite channels -- has a lot to do with your "heart" with the horses. Just love it! Best regards to you and the family. JV
Agree. Many animals are not happy without a job. As people with malinois or border collies know. They get destructive and bored without something to do.
Oliver was such a well behaved boy during his fitting !! You got a very good lesson on hitching everything. Good thing you have it on video. I would never be able to remember everything she told you . I'm glad you like the new cart you got for working Oliver. Becca was a good sport !
It's like breeds of working dogs - they want that teamwork with a human, and they're happy working.
Oliver is a beautiful handsome horse! I'm so glad he was taken away from those horrible auctions. He is so gentle and sweet. You can tell he's very contented and happy. Thank all of you who helped him get to where he is today. Oliver is doing so well for as young as he is. Being in a strange place can be difficult. He's handling like a champ. He's being so patient!
I can’t understand people that think like that . Oliver is going to be happier doing what his best friend is doing. He will be happier being a horse. Doing what horses do.
The level of trust that Oliver has in JR is so beautiful.
You can see he's so happy to be loved by your family and friends. He is really a special horse ❤.
For a two year old in a strange place, Oliver is doing just so wonderfully well, just shows how much he trusts you after rescuing him, truly great🐴🐎🐴
Yes he is. He is such a sweetheart, and being so patient. It takes a lot of trust to do that.
❤ Oliver is such a good boy. You treat him like the king he is. I love Oliver!!
Oliver is a Rock Star!!! JR and Family have done a great job. Oliver knows he’s loved and his trust in you guys is proof of that. My heart overflows!!!
Oliver is such an amazing horse. I used drive horses and it was always an incredible experience ... totally different from riding, and it takes more concentration to stay safe, especially when a horse spooks. Can't believe people think you should get a horse and let it do nothing for thousands of dollars a year in expenses. It's like buying a car and never driving it. People forget that a short 100+ years ago, EVERYONE used horses as a daily driver, growing food, going to town and church, hauling wood, hauling coal, and the list goes on and on. People can be so silly 😂
WHEN I WAS ONLY 10 (IN 1957), MY GRANDMAS TOLD ME HOW THEY USED TO HITCH UP A WAGON. ALL THE OLDER PEOPLE HAD THOSE STORIES TO TELL! IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL AND SIMPLISTIC TIME! WE COULD USE SOME OF THAT TIME NOW! 🕊️💖🕊️
My Mother went to school on her Shetland pony from the time she was about five. School was 3 or 4 miles from her home. She would spend half an hour catching him in the morning, he spent all day grazing, but coming home she told me she would have to tie down her hat snuggly and hold on because his little legs didn't stop until he was home again. Interesting to note, to this day, it's written into the educational handbook that schools have to supply fodder and water for horses that come to school, even though it's been more than half a century since anyone did that.❤ 🤣🤣
@delishme2 What a great story. Can't beat those memories.
Oliver is so patient What a good boy. He gets more beautiful every day. Wow so much involved in harnessing. ❤❤❤❤❤
It’s amazing how well Oliver did during his fitting! You have an amazing boy on your hands!
What's nice is you can refer back to your video when you harness him at home.
I have never seen a young horse be so trusting in a new place getting new things done to him. The fitting of the harness astounded me, I never realized how much is to make it work. Many kudos to our ancestors for figuring it out. Many blessings to you for making the effort. Hugs to all!
"Working Horses With Jim" if you like that sort of thing (and I do). You'll like it none the less.
Your son is such a nice young man. He looks just like Dad. Great video! Love Oliver!
"Oh my gosh, you're 16 now?" LMBO!!! I totally get this!
What a wonderful, patient horse! Beautiful too! Cheers to Oliver! ...still can't believe he ended up at an auction like he did.
Oliver really trusts your husband to protect and take care of him.
What?! Oliver’s only two years old. He has a long good life ahead of him. Oliver is going to have fun pulling
Oliver is bred - and built - to work. He wants to get up have an adventure everyday.
Nice patiënt lady to explain everything to people who dont know a lot about harnassing 😊
So glad Ollie's got good people capable of making informed equine decisions about his health and well-being. Not to mention that he needs a job. You all take such wonderful care of all your critters ❤ 😊
Oliver ❤. Could he be any more patient and gentle? What a CHAMP!!! I agree, JR. Every being has a purpose, Oliver will be his best at what draft horses do. What an amazing adventure you have ahead of you. Never stop learning. Your friend (a retired teacher, still missing my classroom) from New Mexico, Carla 🎶💐💗
❤when I see all the horses look so healthy with shining coats and eyes, plus the beautifully laid out barn I smile at people suggesting that you would not do the very best for Oliver.
Oliver is so handsome! He is a great horse. He's patient and gentle. Love Oliver❤
Your videos plus a couple others is all i watch. I love OLIVER and how You, JC and Becca care for him and brought him back to health from what could have been sure death. You all on your Homestead have the most incredible, inspiring, interesting site ever. I love how you care for your horses. I have contributed to Oliver's care back when he was sick. I fell in love with him ! ❤ I love the way in which you train your horses. Soft hand. I have seen hard-handed horse ranchers and i just could not watch it. Turned the channel quicker than a hungry flea-jumping critter. Much love to all of you at your horse ranch. I feel the same way as JC's wife: How can you sell those horses you have trained and loved. I am glad Ozark will never be for sale. I watched Ozark's birth- wow, that foal stood up in 19 minutes. Strong baby ! ❤ to all, and God Bless !
I agree with you RJ he needs a goal in life.......all the best can't wait till next time.......love you Oliver......
You bring back such great memories of my father and I with our horses. I'm an 83 years old woman.
Wow, very interesting video. I would be lost putting on all his hardware , good luck and have fun with Oliver. Thanks for sharing. ❤❤❤❤
JR, you explained that so well. The draft horse and all working animals were bred that way exactly. And those animals love to work!
Cart-pulling Becca was hilarious!
What an adventure Oliver is having! I truly look forward to many, many years of watching your videos! How wonderful and blessings to you and your family!
I love that Oliver is now healthy enough to do what comes natural to him! He is a beautiful horse and has such a gentle disposition thanks to all of your care and training! Thank you for continuing to share his progress and story.
Yeah Oliver you’re the man! I couldn’t be more proud of you if you were my own. Can’t wait to follow you on your journey with this lovely family.
Im glad you snuck Oliver a treat when she said " wakey wakey" ...smart boy Oliver.
I think Oliver loves you so much hed do anything you ask within his ability. Hes no dummy. You made him well again an gave him life back to. Your daughter a good sport.
great information. didn't realize there was this many pieces for the harness. oliver is such a goooood boy.
Right, I don’t think we did either lol
I got lost myself!
Oliver is so good . Love wstching this horse .I am so glad your keeping him a stud .and i think he loves his master and home .
Dad wake up your girls are growing fast .
He looks so good.❤
"Working Horses With Jim" has a recent fitting video to show you exactly how that collar should fit Oliver's neck. You would enjoy it.
Oliver is amazing he has beautiful eyes horses and dogs like to be worked
That was SUPER! Oliver is so calm. It is a great gift to have instilled such confidence and ease in him. Thank you!
I’m so excited to see Oliver pulling his cart in his harness! And see how he evolves as a working horse! Such a great sweet boy! Loved watching the fitting! So much fun learning about the harness and how it goes on!
You have done a great job with his discipline and manners. This Gentle Gaint has been come a long ways. Great work.
❤️🫶❤️ N.C 🇺🇲
Oliver! ❤ He doesn't look like a little orphan anymore.
I love your family and they fact they are so involved too. Oliver looks 1000 times better than when you got him. I want to also comment on the purpose thing, we ALL have a purpose in life, why wouldnt animals? I think its awesome of you to want to give all your horses a better way in life. You guys are great and keep up the good work. Oh yeah Becca, good job on not dumping your dad!!!
What a good boy standing so still while you got him fitted.
Never question the person who is selling draft horse paraphernalia. She looked at Oliver. She looked at the collar. She knew exactly which one to get😂
Thanks so much to the lady harness educator! What a gift of knowledge and sharing! Blessings to her and her family.
Oliver has the sweetest face ❤
Can’t wait to see him in his harness.
Kinda like his " prom " tuxedo 🤠
😂😂😂 So much for you all to learn! Of course he will love working with you. Appropriately worked and cared for horses are happy horses. He'll probably learn how to put the harness on by himself!
Great work Becca!
Becca pulling you in the cart?!?!? Unreal! That's hilarious JR ❤😂
Found the whole harness fitting video very interesting and instructive as did you. You were most fortunate. Will continue to watch Oliver's and your progress!
That was very interesting! Even though I will never use a harness it was still interesting!, I think it’s great that Oliver is going to be used for what he was bred for! He’s actually blessed to be healthy enough now and also land an amazing family who treat him like the prince he is!! Hats off to you all! Also that lady was very informative for JR to learn from! Have a great day!! 💕🇦🇺👍
Oliver has captured my heart. He was so sick and miserable and now he is stunning, muscled, bright eyed, safe, cared for, and most importantly loved. I look forward to all his videos as his story has truly captured my heart. He gives me hope somehow, though I know this makes no sense. When he looks at JR with complete trust, it is truly beautiful. Out of curiosity, how much did all the tack featured in this video cost for Oliver? Harnessing definitely seems complicated. Please pet him for me. I can't wait to see more of this big, shiny boy.
I find the mentality of having a purpose in life goes for everybody dog horse or human etc..... if properly implemented .. when I was 14 I went on the dog sled racing scene with my father .. these dogs are so keen to pull you could hardly contain them .. I feel like it is going to be the same way with Oliver when he gets into the groove of it all .. plus you folks are helping the environment by not using fossil fuels for regular farm stuff
When draft horses are in a pulling competition they get so excited to pull that it is often difficult to hitch them to the sled, they "jump the gun" frequently because they think they are hitched up and can't wait to pull. Just watch a pulling competition and you'll see that they love to work!😊❤
yes it is another way we can be in tune with the animals we were meant to look after and encourage to grow@@rebeccarothfuss-ym3gs
Oh my gosh you’re 16 now? 🤣🤣🤣
JR I’m glad you explained the genetics so that people can understand the animals purposes of what they’re bred for and I know that they all love what they do. Well said! And sweet beautiful Oliver was and is such a good boy!
I’ve only been following you guys and subscribed for I think four days now (yes I’ve been binge watching your channel) and I love how you interact with each other, all your animals and your followers. You’re my kind of people. The good Lord has truly blessed your lives including the lucky babies you have. 😉🥰
Really interesting! And Oliver was so good!
One value-added of this video is that JR just has to watch it again in case he forgets where one of the straps go 😁
So interesting seeing him fitted for harness. How great he was to just stand quietly (and eat treats) lol. Such a good boy. Love the update.
Great video! Very excited to see you work more with Oliver! :)
I CANT WAIT TO SEE HIM PULLING YOU!!! I watch WORKING HORSES WITH JIM and i think its fascinating!!!
Very interesting and Oliver is such a good boy!! His calmness is do to the way you have been handling an training with him. Good job!!😊😊❤❤❤
Very interesting❤
Oliver will thrive with a purpose❤
A dream you dream alone is only a dream...A dream you dream together becomes reality....Oliver's Dream is coming True....
He has grown so much
Oliver is being so patient.
Jeez, that’s complicated! Hope he remembers all that!
Oliver did wonderful getting sized up for his harness. Yes, I believe retiring him would be a very low quality of life. He loves the interaction and he knows you saved his life. He will want to learn the things he was bred to do. Such a great horse!
LOVE your channel and watching Oliver!!! GR8 job!!!
Love you guys😊
Amazing , your all doing the Best ever for Oliver ❤don’t listen too the na sayers . Hugz from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
I love Oliver. ❤
I am a new subscriber I found your channel April 20, 2024. I am watching Oliver’s playlist. I think that people that thought that you should retire him come from the side of ‘Oh poor Oliver. He had such a rough start in life”, because they don’t understand that Oliver doesn’t live in that place anymore. Although I guess that it is possible that he could be slightly behind where he should be. He is all about being all that he can be. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself and nobody else should either. He is a healthy happy Stallion that deserves to have what every other draft horse stallion has the right to do and be.
Ya'll need to watch Working Horses with Jim. Jim's great with working horses.😊
yup we all need a purpose, loving your way of life
I just love this channel! You are awesome and I love how you love your horses!🦋❤️🙏
Goodness, I would have been so lost with all these straps and stuff, and even seeing it twice would probably not have been able to do it myself afterwards. 🤣
In any case, I think there's nothing wrong with Oliver working now that he has fully recovered. That will not only keep his muscles in shape, it will also keep his brain busy and that for sure is a good thing IMHO. (corrected some typos)
Lover Oliver❤
I love Becca! 😂😂😂 ❤️ 💪🏼💪🏼 ❤️ 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Oh my! As a child, I could puzzle about a hackamore.
I agree with what they said. He has so much potential' don’t waste it on grazing and getting fat and lazy. I think that he would be bored and it would change his great personality. He is wonderful and he strives to please you. Your love for him will take him a long way.❤ to Oliver.
That was fantastic ! What an education as I always wondered about harnesses and how they work 🐴 To see Oliver in such good health and fulfilling your dream of him in a harness and working it, is so heartwarming. 🙆 Team work is dream work.
🙏 blessings
You are so right. Having a purpose increases his quality of life
My granddaughter won a silver in the Texas girls power lifting for AAA schools.
Wow. Your granddaughter must be a great athlete. That's wonderful.❤😊
@@rebeccarothfuss-ym3gs Yes she is. I am very proud of her. She now goes to Texas A&M in Galveston Majoring in Marine Biology. Brains and brawn. And she is very pretty too.
Hello 👋 from Arkansas
😊 WORKING HORSES WITH JIM channel has everything you need information wise.
Yes, they are happy when they have purpose (work) .
Oliver is so patient. I love the look on his face... like "what are you people doing'! ' I'm cool with whatever as long as I get snacks"!
This was really interesting to watch! Fitting/Harnessing a horse is quite a process (from my inexperienced POV).
13:52 Keep the harness the way it is for sleds. If you want to pull a log around I make the brake straps shorter and loop them around the tug straps to keep them off the ground of away from his feet.
Your thought process and logic are spot on. If I ever need a horse I'm headed your way and God knows this push for EVs and the Green New Deal, may well lead us all in that direction. Be Blessed.
By God, people are daft. JR knows whats best for Oliver and all the animals in his care. I trust his judgment and consider him extremely knowledgeable. I watch his videos for Oliver and for the wholesomeness of the entire family. If you are watching to find something to critique, then go find something else to do with your time. If you are any kind of a follower, then you know full well JR takes care of the animals znd the family, the best way he knows. And he is the first to admit when he lacks knowledge in a particular area, but then sets out to learn increasing his knowledge base. As you can see, I am ready to take on you negative nellies who want to sit on your sofa criticizing those that put in the work with nothing but the best of intention. He has so much work on his plate, as does the entire family. Never seen such a lovely hardworking family in this decade, or the last. These days are dark enough without putting your ugly here. Just leave and let the rest of us to our enjoyment.
Do you want to be a moderator for us? LoL cause you’re hired!
@@homesteadhorsemanship I accept. Lol. But you really need to adopt me. I can be Bonus Grandma. Haha. Big hugs to Oliver.
you go for it jr
Perhaps showing you how a harness goes on and fits one of her horses would have help get started, but she sure knows her stuff and I learned a lot too. Oliver needs a good stratching for how good he was.
Amen
Oh Emory, I hope you're taking notes. I would need several lessons
