    I flunked 6th grade in '70 and made it up at a summer school 100 miles away and stayed with my GP's in a small town. I walked all over that town when schoolday was over. I learned so much and saw so many things that were about to disappear forever.

    I don’t smoke pipes but I sure enjoy yr stories. Yes, changes. And how we circle around to where we started . I think about when we were babies we had to be fed,we didn’t have much hair, we didn’t have any teeth, and then when we get much older we have less hair and sometimes we need to be fed and taken care of, and we don’t have any teeth! Thank you for your video. You have a great weekend. Happy Fathers Day!

    1969: I'm about 4 years older than you; I had my first "job" as a dishwasher at a local greasy-spoon diner. Had to quit to go back to school. 1970: Spent the summer as a camp counselor, and discovered it didn't pay enough for college. So back to more jobs. September 1970 I was a college freshman - that's a life-changing experience!

      Wow, what a great story! Testing the work waters is a terrific way to get you back in school, I did the same thing in 1973.

    We are almost exactly the same age and it's weird how similar our teenage years were. Being 15 in the summer was boring. No driver's license, not working, no way to get around except by bike or walking unless you had older friends who could drive and back then most of them usually didn't have a car at their disposal. Puberty was in full swing and girls were a total obsession. When I retired several years ago I didn't do a thing for six months and I was bored stiff, bought a motorcycle and got bored by that and finally I went back to work to keep from going crazy. I worked for eight years after that and finally hung it up for good and slowly adjusted to keeping busy with hobbies and other things. But I can tell you that if I could go back to 1970 I'd do it in a hear beat., especially if I could know what I know now. Have a good one. Great video. See you at seven if you're doing a live feed. Think I'll smoke some Jack Knife Plug tonight.

    • @Matches860
      @Matches860  5 років тому +2

      Yes, I knew at the time I was in a temporary lag, but part of me enjoyed it and the other part was looking forward to advancing. All those mixed emotions at that age, it's a wonder we stayed sane.

  • @jimmydigital
    @jimmydigital 5 років тому

    when you retire you're never bored. for one thing time just seems to go so much quicker. by the time you're up, showered, dressed, eaten breakfast, maybe done one or two jobs/errands you had planned, it's already dinner time and you're thinking 'I only got out of bed 5 minutes ago; where did all the time go?'

    Wonderful story discussing the similarities of the two phases. I'm just a few years younger than you but feeling a similar push & pull towards retirement. I think my mind and body are ready but all the necessary circumstances are not firmly in place. I keep telling myself to enjoy the next 3 - 5 years since I'm on the final leg of this 40+ year work race. But my heart and soul have already slowed down and are now looking for the bleachers I'm afraid. Interesting process for sure. Best, Gary

    John,
    Good story and video! I remember The Summer of 70.
    The Summer of '80 wasn't much better. To boot O did not have a girlfriend at the time.🙄.
    You and I are a decade apart.
    I have really gone on for
    Haunted Bookshop lately. Guess it helps that my soon 5o be wife likes it better than OJK😊. Also came across a tin of ten yr. old Bayou Night. That REALLY hit the spot for me.
    So I ordered half a pound.

    I enjoy these story videos from you. Summers used to be a magical thing as a kid, but part of the magic came from the understanding that school would eventually come back. I can imagine how retirement could stir some mixed emotions. That being said, I'm sure you'll enjoy it once you get into a groove! Also, I tend to enjoy the 50-to-70-degree temperatures the most (Fall is definitely my favorite season). Take care and have a great weekend!

    You're a gifted storyteller, John - very eloquent. Perhaps you were a medicine man in a previous life. You often succinctly capture the bitter-sweet humor of life, and your words become genuine soul food. Many thank yous, brother! You could easily sell collections of your life stories on mp3 or mp4, for the piper's smoky enjoyment and contemplation. The proceeds could possibly help fund your blessed stock of HB in retirement - ha. Cheers, and happy weekend to you - Eric
