To avoid losing a lot of hair, soak the doll in bowl full with 3 tablespoons of fabric softener and let the hair soak for 10 minutes or even 1 hour until the hair feels soft 😊 try it next time 😊
I loved watching this! I’ve been professionally restoring vintage dolls for many years and the 80’s and 90’s Barbie dolls are so fun.
Just a small tip: Vintage Barbie hair from the 80’s and 90’s is Kanekelon, modern doll hair is Saran or PVDC. Kanekelon is a type of nylon based plastic, and is extremely durable to heat. If you restore vintage 80’s and 90’s doll hair, the easiest way to de-mat and smooth it, is to put hot water from a kettle into a bowl and add in liquid dish soap and fabric softener. Soak the dolls head in the mixture for five minutes and let the heat soften the fibers, don’t worry it will not melt the doll or damage the hair.
You want to gently use a doll hair brush or baby comb on the hair while it’s hot. The heat is what actually softens the wirey damaged hair and the soaps do very little other than clean and condition to brighten the color of the fibers. The hot water automatically softens and untangles the hair to some degree and kind of resets it to factory shape, so you don’t have to brush it as much or as harshly. The only downside to this method is that it will straighten curly hair. Use pipe cleaners as hair curlers and while the hair is wrapped in the pipe cleaners, dip it in a new batch of hot water to force the fibers to permanently set by heat to that shape, and let it dry. :)
This was so helpful! I am trying to restore my Barbies! Any more tips to share? Or a website with a good guide? Thanks!
That’s awesome
Hi!! First of all, lemme tell you, this is ICONIC that you’re doing this, I love this so much!! 💗 I had a few things to say tho. My grandma used to restore dolls for her antique shop for a living, and she actually taught me so tips and tricks!! So for severely dirty doll bodies, she used a magic eraser. And something else, I can’t remember what it is atm. But also, the metal brush actually just makes it easier for you to brush through!! (You could buy an American girl metal brush off of different places, I wish I still had mine otherwise I’d gift it to you!!) Ps, I’m only half way through the video at this point, so I might think of more tips and tricks later. If so, I will reply to this comment. (I used to LOVE Barbie’s so I’m eating this up!! So proud of you Alyssa!! ^~^)
Hi!! Me again!! So for the bangs, you could use a metal chopstick and a straightener (that’s what dollightful uses here on UA-cam, and possibly a few other doll customizers as well) Hopefully that helps a ton, I think you did great for your first restoration!! ^~^ (I feel like a proud mother lol, love you and your channels, and pets of course!!)
A common thing to use to help curl, bangs, and stuff in doll hair is to use straws or the pipe cleaners because they help hold their shape and they’re not too big.
I was just using that same flea comb on one of my Barbie's last night 😂 in here for some tips, I have a lot of 80/90s Barbie's to makeover.
I had no idea you collected dolls I use to follow your main account when you would do tattoo and piercing videos I collect dolls to. The Barbie restoration came out so good 💖
That's an amazing transformation. You should be super proud! Hope you do more Barbies
Fabric softener in with the water when you’re detangling does wonders! Good job though, you did good not dunking the head all the way in that can melt the glue and getting glue out of hair SUCKS! You’re doing great!
For the bangs, cut straws and use a Bobby-Pin to clasp, then use the hot water. Also, you can roll it up and pin it in to the head to avoid having the bobby pin line when it dries if you’re partial to that way.
Hi!! I love restoring Barbies too!! You can boil wash when the hair is still intact!! I did two recently and can't believe the results!! Shampoo w dish detergent, condition w fabric softener then boil wash...amazing!!! Oh. Ok...you did!! Lol!! You can get a metal dog brush from Dollar Tree! Js..
The doll looks amazing!! 😍
This came out great!
I think you did a good job. Normally even as careful as you can be with doll hair some is going to come out if it's really Tangled. She looks so nice now.
I still have mine. My niece decided she was Rapunzel.
I had this barbie and she was my all time favorite ❤️
you did not too bad ... glad you got it looking good ..
I just restaured mine but her hair way was even worse than this one. I still like the result although she did shed a lot of hair too. But she was about to end up in the trash anyways. And kenakelon hair is very resilient :)
Saving dolls is so satisfying
This is impressive. Wow, you did an amazing work.
Omg!!!! I use the Hello Kitty toothbrushes for cleaning too!!! Love it!!
Hi! Loving the video. I bought a pet brush with metal bristles for cheap. An o.g doll brush works too if you can find one. X
Wow she looks amazing
To wash Barbies hair I use wig shampoo and wig conditioner. It is amazing.
She looks amazing!! What a Barbie 💖The next time dont boiling wash the fringe, only cold wather, to keep the original form.
Le vota demaciado cabello a las muñecas es mejor lavarle el cabello y después echarle mucho acondicionador y desenredar con peines de dientes gruesos así noble vota demaciado cabello alas chicas 😮
I loved this video.
Why am I shocked that you, as an american, own a kettle? 😅 (I'm from the uk, haha)
A lot of people own kettles here ? Lol
@agactually please understand I don't mean to offend at all, in a lot of videos or even when talking to Americans online in my experience, they haven't even heard of a kettle so its just interesting to know you have one!
Hi that’s Totally Hair Teresa Latina friend of Barbie 🩷
Using a cut straw and a bobby pin can help with the curls so they can be smaller since there is different sizes straws but you did amazing!!!
And adding brown sharpie on the balding spots could also help if it bothers you though but again you did amazing though!!
I like this video
You should have wet the hair and used conditioner before brushing
You did amazing! I'm so happy you're getting into restoring dolls, some of my favorite kinds of videos to watch. She looks so good! I wonder if you would have better luck curling the bangs if you used a chopstick or straws and then applied heat to set? Im excited to see the next one!
Advice: wash their hair with dove shampoo and conditioner you thank me later
change the video description "how to wreck a barbie dolls hair in under 20 minutes" lmfao .
I would but I didn’t wreck her hair.. the result came out great imo 👍🏼
Great job. A tip if you’re able to would be getting pipe cleaner and wrapping the bangs around it when they’re damp and allowing them to dry completely. Also use hairspray on them. I don’t know about Barbie restoration so do your research but just a couple things I thought that might work.
Kiera, not Mira
I would not have used that brush to untangle i mean really if you had no proper comb u should have used your fingers i have done that but the best way to untangle is wide tooth comb and conditioner ..
I recommend the channel A Thousand Splendid Dolls, for restoration tips and tricks. She has a lot of information on how to treat different hair types and also fixing damages. 😊 ❤
American Girl wig brushes are pretty inexpensive, but I personally use a metal slicker brush that has a side with the clumps of plastic bristles, that side just smooths everything down after.
Also, tip: Curling the ends and bangs with straws should work fine. Curling the ends just keeps them from looking strange. Straw curlers are the go-to tools for curling doll hair.
I think she came out great! 😊I have a few of the super long haired Barbies and I want to do this so bad, but I'm also a nervous wreck to do so! 😬
This is a interesting video to watch
Cut plastic straws and use them for curlers
Hello - The fringe (bangs) needs a little more work. Just see the original, which is quite defined. Otherwise great job. - DrD
I said that in the video, I like it the way it is
to curl the bangs, there are short extra small curlers you can get perms in the beauty supply stores (sometimes Walmart, too, but not as often these days) and as others mentioned, you can use pipe cleaners in place of curlers (though for anything longer than bangs, you want to use curl papers or some kind or the pipe cleaners will tear out the hair). ONCE THE HAIR IS CURLED, dip in the boiling water in a cup, AND THEN SHOCK THE HAIR by dipping in ice water. Let dry completely. Remove the perm curler/pipe cleaner.
It's been very heartwarming to see you revive and care for that little piece of your childhood 😍 And the result is amazing! I've never had a barbie, but I vividly remember to play with this one from a friend, since I always loved (and still love) to play with hair. I would really love to get my hands on one of these totally hair barbies one day, and I will definitely revisit your video if the one I get is also well loved. Thanks for sharing! 🥰
Omg I’m subscribed to your other channel and had no idea that you also had a doll channel! So exciting and happy I found this channel too!
Anyone else trying to fix a wig that has similar hair to retro Barbies? No? Yikes
Great job on Theresa!!! She looks much better 💕
Well done, for first time restoration
🙂👍
I think it looks amazing
Great job! Dress was from a Vanna White doll
