Shoutout to user @block2 for the request! This was my first time reacting to Mamamoo. Unfortunately, this one had no subtitles or ability for me to connect to the songs; however, vocally, they were great. The rapper had good flow and the vocalists were fantastic. Even though I'm a fan of throwing in a growl here and there, I think the girl in pink might have overdone that trick. I hope you all enjoyed and will look forward to the Killing Voice reaction!

For your information, this is the only group that every member have their own solo album, they basically 4 vocalist, 4 rapper, 4 dancers, 4 performer, 4 songwriter, and 4 comedians. And also this immortal song is performed during their 4 hours concert. They singing live with the bands behind them and moving this much in heel and still sound amazing. You can’t find this kind of group anymore. They have been debuted since 2014.

Left to right it's Moonbyul, Solar, Wheein and Hwasa. They stand in the same formation everytime. All four can sing, dance and rap.
These songs are covers of classic Korean songs aka immortal songs performed on the competition show Immortal Songs 2 where Mamamoo appeared on the show 14 times as a group and won 3 times.

It's a medley of the covers they did for the TV show "Immortal Songs". They won several times there. The standalone stages are also incredible so they're worth a watch.
Moonbyul is also a great vocalist, she actually got into the company as one until they made her a rapper.
Imo the best videos to check out if you're curious about her vocals is Congratulations, Refuge and ddu ddu ddu. Also, she just came back with a full album today with the title track "Touchin & Movin".
Ah ok. Yea I wasn't sure if these were actually their songs or if they were covers. I admittedly have a small sample size but this didn't sound like their normal music at all.
Oh I see... so they actually trained her to rap rather than cultivate her vocal talent initially. Interesting. I know from other comments that she is actually a great vocalist like you said but I didn't know she was originally one that got kinda converted. Any idea why they did that?
@@JeffReacts12 the other tree are outstanding vocalist and the company forced Moonbyul to become a rapper or she wouldn´t debut. But as stated she is a great vocalist but not as good as the other tree atleast not back in 2014. She is a outstanding rapper and a good dancer also. Also the most credited female idol with 100 + credited songs as she write all of here own raps.

Most of your questions have been answered. I'll fill you in on this performance and add some info about Moonbyul's singing.
This vid was filmed at a Mamamoo concert in 2017 called Moosical Curtain Call. Their debut concerts the previous year were called Moosical. You mentioned they started with a piano track and didn't seem to notice the live band, who killed it imo. Mamamoo always uses a live band for their Korean concerts. Up until covid their yearly concerts got increasingly longer and more spectacular - their 4 Seasons F/W concerts in 2019 were over 4 hours long and filled with one jaw-dropping moment after another.
At that time Moonbyul only rapped and occasionally sang harmonies on MMM songs. In 2018 she started singing with the group on Paint Me, one of their main vocal masterpieces, and has sung more and more over time, esp on her solo releases. In 2022 Moonbyul won a landslide victory on the tv show The Second World, where 8 very talented girl group rappers competed as singers over multiple rounds. You're correct about her solo comeback - she released a 12 song solo album today called Starlit of Muse. Btw, every member of Mamamoo has a successful solo career - they were the first group to have all members chart on Billboard as solo artists while the group was still active as a unit.
Mamamoo is best when they're live so the Killing Voice video is a good place to start. If you want to watch an intro to the group to get to know them better I suggest Why Mamamoo is the Most Underrated Kpop Group. Don't be put off by the intentionally clickbait title - it's an excellent video essay about Mamamoo, is the most up to date guide available, and at 27 minutes it fits your guidelines.
Thank you for all of the info. That's crazy, a 4+hr concert?! Lol Jesus. Yea I didn't mention the live band because I didn't feel like that was out of the ordinary...I'm used to a bunch of groups using a live band so I was more goin with how it opened and the tone that was being set :) I honestly rarely pay attention to the band during a concert unless they mess up, although I can't recall ever hearing one mess up either.
That's awesome about Moonbyul. I had a feeling she had done more vocally and that this just wasn't the performance to show that off. I enjoyed her rap though so even if she never had begun singing more she still would have been a talented artist!

@@JeffReacts12 Just wanted to make sure you noticed the band. I don't watch much concert footage for other kpop groups but what I've seen has had canned music.
Moonbyul isn't on the same level as the others as a singer but I respect how hard she has worked to improve her singing. Her melodic rap style and deeper than usual voice make her unique in kpop and since she writes almost all of her own rap verses and MMM has recorded hundreds of songs Moonbyul has the most songwriting credits of any female idol.
I don't make requests but I'll make suggestions if asked or if it seems appropriate and relevant. I recommended the guide video because you said you don't know them very well and I think MMM is well worth getting to know.
@@JeffReacts12 Forgot to reply about the 4+ hr long concerts. Yeah, who does that other than maybe the Grateful Dead or Bruce Springsteen back in the day? Tho as I recall the shows I saw by them in the 70's were long but not 4+ hours long. Considering MMM doesn't lip sync that kind of vocal stamina is amazing. 😲😊
@kudgeond755 haha yep, I noticed em :) I don't watch a ton of concert footage either but I do go to quite a few. The reason I said it's relatively common is cause the concerts I went to, probably about 50-60% of them had live bands. Blackpink comes to mind along with Stray Kids.
That's really impressive! I wonder just how many credits she's got 🤔 Is she still actively writing as well? I assume so since she just had a comeback. Her lower voice reminds me of Yuqi from GIDLE but Moonbyul also throws in more rapping ability. The more I get to know about some of these idols, the more I question where God sent all of the talent I was supposed to get 😂

@kudgeond755 yea thats just nuts. Like, doing it once or twice here and there? Impressive but not a huge deal. But doing tours and such and the concerts getting longer over time... thats awesome. You not only have to factor in vocal stamina but also memory for added choreo and fatigue in general depending on how many shows they were doing. They were here in LA a year or so ago and I thought of going but ended up not. Heard it was a great show tho and not a short one lol
rapper on left..debuted as vocalist but had to become a rapper. In past year she has really started to sing more know and her new album is mostly sining.
Very nice! I had a feeling she had probably developed more vocally since this group is renowned as a vocal queen group. This just wasn't the performance that showed her vocals...it did show strong rap though!

I would love to see you do a deep dive into Mamamoo! Other than their Killing Voice, which serves as a sample of their discography, there are a few great fan made guides. The intros by both Purple Hawke and MOOYT are amazingly edited (Purple Hawke is great to get to know the girls individually, and MOOYT is a more updated guide of their history).
Other than their group discography, they all have flourishing solo careers! I personally love Wheein and Moonbyul's songs the most, as well as Solar and Moonbyul together as the subunit MAMAMOO+.
If you like jazz, RnB, hip-hop, blues, pop, disco, rap, or any other combination of music, you can probably find it somewhere in their discography.
Haha perhaps someday! I haven't really done a deep dive per se into any group on the channel since I have such limited time but it's definitely something I'd consider as future content.

Yea the solo thing is what a lot of comments have been hyping up like "this group is 4 soloists, 4 singers, 4 comedians, etc" it's really cool that they've all had the talent and artistry to each have solo efforts too. There's very few groups where all of the members have done/could do that.

Whee-in (the one in the tan suit) is my bias out of the group! Her solo music is AMAZING, my fav out of all of their solos. She’s the best dancer and her vocals are actually amazing. Literal honey vocals. Once you Whee-in you can’t whee-out. Anyways, you should react to some of their music videos if you get the chance. Some of my favs are Wind Flower, Piano Man, gogobebe, Aya

1. songs from that vid was all from a competition show they participated/performed called "Immortal Songs 2". they did revivals of songs from legend korean singers. they performed in more than 10 episodes and won 3 times. then they rearranged and did a medley of it for this concert thus this immortal songs medley. you can check out the each performances in your own time, it's worth it. since it's from tv shows, reacting and uploading them here in yt will most likely get you a copyright claim/blocked.
2. moonbyul(the rapper) only raps in this performance. but she also sings. you can better explore her vocals and artistry through her solo works. she does have a lower register, and i think that makes her unique. she did release her first full album just this month (Starlit of Muse), it's a variety of genre.
3. its understandable you didnt like hwasa's i love my body. its okay :) we all have different preferences in music. its not her usual genre, but i believe she put out that song because of how it made her feel when she was having a difficult time.
4. excited for you to see the killing voice. its a brief way to introduce you to mamamoo's discography.

2. Awesome! I like her lower voice. I'm more familiar with Yuqi from GIDLE when it comes to lower registers and Dami from Dreamcatcher but it's cool to see there were more that came before/are still performing!
3. I don't often outright dislike a song but yea lol. That being said, she sounded great and the song has a great message so it isn't a 100% awful song even from my view. A song that, imo, has almost no redeemable qualities is something like "Baggy Jeans" from NCT.
4. I'm not sure how quick I'll get there but I know it's not very far down the list at this point so I'm looking forward to it :D

This medley performance was recorded during their 2017 Moosical Concert Tour, and they did this during a 4 HOUR Concert! Mamamoo are definitely Top Tier when it comes to Artists!
This medley comes from the most popular songs of the 14 they did on Immortal Songs 2. A very popular singing competition show in Korea. The premise of the show is current artists come on and sing the songs of well loved older "Immortal" artists, or composers, who are there watching. At this point, Mamamoo are the ONLY Kpop group to be invited 14 times (You have to be invited to be on the program), they were the first group to win 3 times, and Mamamoo still currently holds the highest record score amongst idol groups (433), and became the first girl group to become the final winner of a special on their 8th appearance. I knew it wasn't written by her but it's still performed by her. Whether she wrote it or not doesn't change that I found that song awful. I looked it up to see who wrote it a while back and I thought I would be the only one comparing her to Meghan Trainor but no, a lot of people were doing the same thing because the song sounds like the Korean version of "All About That Bass" from Meghan from like a decade ago. "Maria" was a MUCH better sounding song imo. I haven't heard any of those others you mentioned so I may have to check some of them out :D
Hwasa vocals were good on that song still but I agree wasn't my favorite. It felt more like PSY (ceo of her new label) style. Check her other songs as she writes and is very involved in her music before. Her last two songs ILMB and Chilli were not written by her. She working on her new album come out this year. @@LuisTren7 Yea, her vocals have always been good from what I have heard. I don't have a large sample size of course but everything I've heard form her has had great vocals. I did also like the message of self-confidence... but the song overall? Oof. If you watch my other vids, you will see I RARELY dislike anything that I give a fair shot to but yeaaaa. Lol, the only other songs I can think of off the top of my head that I just didn't like was New Jeans "ASAP" (reacted to it), NCT127 "Baggy Jeans" (didn't react), and literally anything form Jessi.

There is also a BIG back story as to why Hwa Sa chose to record the song. She hadn't signed with P Nation yet, and she was on a show called "Dancing Queens on the Road" with some of the legends of Korean music, and during a performance at a college festival, she did a dance move that a woman (who wasn't there, saw a clip online) decided was indecent, and inappropriate and had Hwa Sa brought up on charges (that is why you see the police car in the end of the "I Love my Body" MV). Even though the dance move was about 2 seconds long, and there were male students brought up on stage, and grinding on the stage, like they were having s3x, but that was ok.
The reason I am telling you all of this, is because she got so much hate because of this, and it all hit as they were landing in the US, for the first night of their MyCon World Tour US leg, in New York. So she had to go on stage, after reading some of the most horrendous hate comments she had even had in her life (her words) and this poor woman has lived with hate thrown at her, her entire career. Well after the show, she finally broke down, but not wanting to burden the other members, she went outside, and cried, alone in the parking lot of the Hotel.
This is when Psy, the owner of P Nation, contacted her, and sent her the song, and she said it was the first thing that was able to make her smile, and that is why she decided to record it. Since it's first, not her song, and she didn't write it, and second, not her usual style. But it was fun, and even though it has a really good message, it does it in a light hearted way, and with everything she was going through, it just felt right. @@JeffReacts12
@kimberly_neville that's sad that she went through that. I will never understand online bullies and I will also never understand knetz in general because they ALWAYS without fail have something to complain about. It's so ridiculous tbh.
I still hate the song but I did acknowledge it has a good message. Thank you for the backstory behind it too! Now I know there was a deeper reason for it. I already knew that she has gotten hate for just how she looks, her skin tone, her thighs, etc but I didn't know all of this. I'm glad that she was able to smile again.
Also, this is something I love about korea/Japan culture but also don't at the same time. You have a group full of friends and coworkers that you're so close with and spend more time with them than your family. So you try not to burden them with your sorrows and try to shoulder things alone but at the same time, those members would love to be there for you. Getting into kpop has given me a chance to see different aspects of culture I otherwise wouldn't know about.
