灯台と日本海 留萌市 Lighthouse and Sea of Japan Rumoi City

留萌市は、北海道の札幌市から最北端の稚内市の間、日本海沿岸の中ほどにあり、江戸時代まではアイヌ民族と和人が混在して暮らしていた。明治時代に入る頃からニシン漁の北上に伴い和人の村が点在するようになった。大正時代には炭鉱も発見され、ニシン漁も盛んとなり定住人口約4万人に加え出稼ぎ労働者は3万人以上いて隆盛を極めていた。昭和40年代以降は、炭鉱の相次ぐ閉山やニシン漁の衰退より人口は減少に転じ、現在は1万8千人ほどである。しかしながら現在でもニシンの水揚げは行われていて、いまでは高級品となったカズノコ(ニシンの魚卵)の国内最大の加工地でもある。

It is the largest processing center in Japan for herring roe, called Kazunoko. Until the 1960s, herring fishing was more prevalent than it is now, and the city also had a coal mine, so the population was over 40,000, but the mine has now closed.
