    It should be pointed out that early Motown through the 60's utilized three guitarists on most of their tracks...the most prominent were Funk Brothers Joe Messina (guitar section leader), Robert White and Eddie Willis...Others like Dennis Coffey, Wah Wah Watson and others came along later. On the classic Motown tracks, the most distinctive part were the razor sharp backbeats played by one, sometimes two, and on occasion three different octaves (for a REALLY fat backbeat). Joe and Robert were primarily jazz players, and their style and chord structures displayed that, while Eddie was a blues and funk inspired guitarist, and he played many of those distinctive funky fills...but the backbeat was the key...and as session leader Earl VanDyke once pointed out...Joe Messina never missed a backbeat in 14 years...

    Wow, I thought I was the only one who noticed that great rhythm guitar of the 60's "soul" which included not only Motown, but the Stax-Volt guys from memphis. Philly had a share in it too.

    Interesting video, but I'd have liked to see what the right hand is doing. Are you using a pick or your fingers? I think that matters for, for instance, muting the non-fretted strings.

    Those particular Marvin Gaye songs aren't what I'd consider EARLY motown at all. Actually, that's about when motown loses me. Great lesson though, and very applicable to the early motown sound.

      Yeah it was basically the Holland-Dozier-Holland era vs the Norman Whitfield era.

    Way too much talking. Can you just play the lesson FIRST then talk about it later? As I click around the timeline, I never seem to fall on a place where there is just guitar playing, just talking.

    That's a great lesson but I wonder why someone like Andrew can easily figure out what was going on in this or that style and someone like Isaac always has to ask that and not try to figure out that himself.

      @SLVMBER80s 9 років тому +2

      VinniePaah Maybe I'm crazy, but I think some people are at different skill levels than others. If a beginner asks an expert for help, maybe it's because not everybody can play by ear, or has years of training in theory to assist them. Or maybe it's the same reason people go to Wendy's for a burger and fries, when they could just grow potatoes and butcher their own cow. It's freakin convenient.

    This guy talks to much. He spend the hole time talking then playing. That's why I like listen to black players. They talk less and play more

      You edited your comment and STILL butchered the English? Maybe you should practice "talking" more, along with your playing?

      Has nothing to do with color! Half of the learning process is learning the terminology and the basics.
      If you want a better lesson with more examples to pick up as an advanced player, check out Cornell Dupree’s “Hot Licks” tape here on UA-cam. He still does a fair bit of talking.

    This is early Motown? Hmmm.....I thought I knew most of the songs!! "...so go ahead and learn the songs and I'm just going to keep on talking about how great Motown artists and songs were! Oh yeah Marvin Gaye was good...that's all the time I have?" I think I covered this ...so-called lesson! Keep looking, you're not going to find a damn thing here!

    Less talk and commentary...more playing would be more helpful

  • @stevegillam7278

    every passing thought your brain creates does not necessarily need to be verbalized. Christ all mighty you never stop talking. I'm 62, have ADHD, don't know music and want to learn how to play stuff and your constant yacking sends me away. If I had a tenth of the music knowledge you possess I wouldn't be coming to youtube for stuff. Most of your customers don't know a percent of the little bits of info you're passing along between thought and are not going to learn it from your asides. Situational awareness dude!
