What a double standard. I love how when they thought it was Tim bashing the kid they were ready to kill him, but when the wife admitted to bashing him, Meg runs over and hugs her (like she's the victim). Sad!
Steve Grainger Megs an idiot! If anyone is stupid enough to feel sorry for that silly bitch they should save their sympathy for the REAL victims - the kids. She chose to have them so she should get on with it, they didn't ask to be born. The judge was spot on about her, she should try doing a proper days work then see how she begs to be back home sitting on her arse while her husband works
My first time watching pcbh but I must admit this is the first time I'm extremely disappointed with the story line, and as much as I like the Meg character, I agree also this was a complete miscarriage. the woman turned out to be the child abuser yet everyone is concerned about her. Meg even says she shouldn't be in there she's not a criminal; but when the husband was the suspect she would have thrown him in prison at the blink of an eye
Wow! Talk about a tough crowd. This story was about how abuse can occur and to get the message across that abuse is not always 'black and white' but that seems to have gone right over everyone's heads to judge from some of these comments. Gail Summers abused her child out of frustration. Was it the right thing to do? Absolutely not. But her frustration came about from the fact that she was isolated and absolutely out of her depth, suffering from post-natal depression while bringing up three young children with no support mechanism and the only other person she saw every day was her unsympathetic husband who subjected her to a constant stream of verbal abuse and cooercive behaviour. With all that happening and her low self-esteem, it's small wonder her mental health was in the dust. Then she goes up before an incompetent magistrate who dismisses all the professional assessments and warnings not to send her to prison because it may risk her mental and physical well-being and basically says: "I know better despite having no expert knowledge or experience in the matter," and sends her to prison. Meanwhile you lot are all screaming: "BURN THE WITCH!!!" 😳😳😳😳 Take my advice you lot - for God's sake never consider a career as a social worker or mental health supporter. 😆😆😆😆
Prisoner is one of my all-time fave shows along with 90s era Simpsons,The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. Prisoner's achievement is greater imo, cos they had to produce nearly a 100 episodes a year on a pretty tight budget. Sopranos and BE only made a dozen or so episodes per season with a massive HBO budget to boot. Imo Prisoner doesn't get enough credit for this.
Double standards meg. you would have been pleased if Tim went to goal, but because it was a mother it wasn't her fault? Fletch was correct in summation. Gail is just as guilty as Tim was when she thought it was him.
I knew just because the way the tv shows go, that it was HER hitting the child and not him. I was not surprised at all. but only because the way tv is haha
@comehitherwithHeather… what do you mean Tim went to goal? That doesn’t make sense. If you are thinking of the alternative spelling of jail, it is gaol not goal.
Yeah, this episode is definitely all about double standards. They would've been glad to see the husband thrown in jail, but not the wife. I do understand she needs help, a lot of people do. But she's definitely being treated differently because she's the woman. The safety of the kids is most important.

I'm so hooked on this show. I'm so glad I decided to watch it, and grateful that someone uploaded the entire show. This show was way ahead of it's time, the themes this show touches on are pioneering from child abuse, sexual abuse, homosexuality, domestic abuse, the correlation between mental health issues and crime, prison reform and the revolving prison door, as well as women in positions of power, the problem of cheap labor from prisoners and the demand it causes for criminals to abortion. It's amazing.
I’ve seen a lot of haters for Judy Bryant really don’t understand why she is a A brilliant character And showed her good nature on this ep she’s a big part of the show now easily one of my favourites
That was some funky music for the bus ride. Why was it only Vera and Mrs Barry driving the bus? They all could have easily overpowered them and driven off in the bus.
I think there’s a lot to be taken into account with the Gail Summers case. No it’s never ever ok to hurt children so she does need to be punished and probably psychiatric help too, but it is easy to sympathise with her because husband, although not guilty of child abuse , actually emotionally abused his wife. He spoke to her like dirt and told her she was useless all the time ……Also I know Mr Fletcher didn’t abuse his kids or have them living in poverty, but he wasn’t exactly father of the year either!! I think Meg was right that he’s letting the loss of his kids affect his judgment
Well I do agree with you I think the father is horrendous that still no excuse I’m afraid I don’t think gail Summers should have her children back at all like Jim Fletcher said it’s the best thing that could’ve happened to them under the circumstances Yeah I’m on Jim side on this one Gail should have Told Meg and been honest with her from the start all this could’ve been avoided but then there won’t be a storyline in the prison. That was a different ending ! Quite emotional I love that music that they sometimes play too . The music that played as the women were leaving the prison and travelling in the van . I’m glad Judy let Noelines family have the money. Dear little Children
Meg & Paul feels more strongly about & sorry for someone that hits a defenceless child than a shoplifter etc. They both treat Tim with contempt & Paul will make sure Tim doesn't get custody of the kids. How's that for victimisation? They're more worried about Gail than the kids.
🤦🤦 no!!! They get a whole sandwich it's just been cut in half and wrapped in cling film so each half of the sandwich is on top of each other they don't get starved with only half a sandwich!!! 😂😂
George Mallaby was great as Paul Reid, of all the social workers they had in the show, he was my favourite and Sheila Florence was Consistently brilliant. Can't stand watching Gail Summers, she added nothing to the show, I tend to skip her scenes.
🥳TRIVIA TIME👏🏼🎉 Noeline Burke’s sister came to leave a message for Noeline. Although uncredited in this particular episode, Noeline’s sister was playing by Joan Millar. Joan Millar returns in episode 197 as Brenda Latham, Chrissy Latham’s sister in law. She only appeared in 2 episodes.
@@apkitching387 I'm unsure if they're related or not. But, Millar is not a very common surname. So, what would be the odds of having 2 unrelated people, both with an unusual last name? Unless Millar is as common in Aussie as Jones or Smith are in America.
@@apkitching387 I've looked in several places, but have only found that Maggie goes by both Millar & Miller & was twice divorced with 1 child before 1979. I didn't realize she was as old as she was. Maggie was born in 1941, making her around 39 when she first appears after Bea is transferred to Barnhurst the first time.
@@Nacho-Mamma Thanks Maggie might have had to change her Miller / Millar name for Equity, quite common for some actors especially when a more familiar actor has their name. Just thought the Millar connection with Prisoner was more than a coincidence 👍
Meg is bang out of order defending Gail after condemning Tim when she thought it was him bashing Jason. Sorry but not sorry Paul -- childrens' best interest is far more important than the dodgy adults they are at the mercy of. If Noeline & Gail lose it then too damn bad. The double standards in the episode are unbelievable. Noeline's wisecrack to Fletch was gold lol.
This “Burkes don’t take social welfare” drivel is exhausting. Judy is ridiculous for letting everyone and their mother know she’s thinking about escaping.
She feels guilty for her being in gaol. Meg decided it was the husband and reported it and it blew up in her face. She never stays out of anybody's business.
WTF Meg? She's annoyed because all Jim can think about is the children. How is it a bad thing to focus mainly on the children in cases like this? His suggestions for Gail's psychiatric treatment don't sound out of line to me. She should be monitored for a while.
You wouldn't want to invite Vera to your house for dinner, she'd probably want a set of your house keys to hang onto while she was there. Who does she think she is?
Mrs. Davidson is so glad that the work release is working out. After half a day! The firm is using cheap convict labor to undercut the competition. Wait until the unions get wind of it. This prison is just unreal. Murderers in with shoplifters, theives and check forgers.
Prisoner was filmed in Melbourne, the state of Victoria, which has a more temperate climate. Australia is a huge continent with varied climates depending on which part you are in! It's not blue skies and sun every single day!!!
That mother- she's an amazing actress & her performance was convincing & bloody amazing 😃👏🏼😃👏🏼😃 . She played her so well. But a very hard & heartbreaking storyline.
The redhaired woman who said she's Noeline's sister turned out to be another characters sister in law in other later episodes. No spoilers for first time viewers.
Love the James Dean / Noeline Burke scene around the 39 minute mark! This surely would make James Dean turn in his grave,if he was still alive to see it.
22:00 - You can tell Erica fancies Mr Reynolds the first time they meet each other. (I know this isn't the first time they met, I forgot to comment about it then). 2/3/20.
20:16, it was ok for Paul Reid to get a message through to Noeline whilst she was in Solitary but not Doreen when she was in solitary over Jock Stewart because it didn't suit the storyline. Love how the prison rules change to accommodate what ever is written in the script.
Does Australia have Parents Anonymous? This is a support group for people who as an old commercial here used to say "Lose their cool with their kids." They meet in a home or maybe a community center and talk about the way they deal with their children, how NOT to hit them. There is a parent available 24/7 so a parent that is about to hurt their child by calling anytime day or night. To get help.
Anyone Else Watching on Google Chrome With THE CAPTIONS ON? it's hysterical!!! esp. at 32:00 Lizzy and Gail convo in the hallway!! Her Grand-daughter bis WHAT? ? !!! (hahaaa!)
Erica's got tickets on herself. All Andrew Reynolds did was invite her out for dinner and she goes into one about their relationship is only going to be a professional one. Talk about uptight.
15:08 - What a load of bullshit Meg. If it was the father taking out his frustration on the kid you'd be calling him a bastard. The show feels different now. A few episodes ago I noticed a shift - new musical stings, the acting is a little more "big", a lot more comedy, artier camera angles etc. It's like there is a new director or something.
19:02 Not in the factory 5 minutes and Judy (who has months in a sentence) is contemplating escape. Geez. 20:15 As a social worker in the 80's and 90's in the USA, I had my fair share of the "Burke" families. 46:00 I knew Judy couldn't keep it when she saw the kids
Exactly. Why, all of a sudden, does Judy want to escape? I would think that she will be eligible for parole soon and in any event is only serving a quite short sentence. She is not a habitual criminal. She is a cab driver. What will she do and where will she go if she does escape? On the run for the rest of her life just to get out of prison a bit earlier and for no known special reason. Is she planning revenge on Jock Stuart? She never even mentioned wanting to escape before this.
I think Paul inviting Meg home for dinner was the only euphemism in this episode..then he fed her bangers & mash :) & she looked like she really enjoyed it too :)
Men like Tim simply have no concept that their shift work or their 9-5 is NOTHING compared to what stay at home moms have to do (and put up with) 24/7/365. I'm not condoning them abusing the kids but they DO put up with far far more than guys like Tim usually have to put up with, and they often do it alone without much if any adult companionship or even adult conversation. Isolation has been shown to increase child abuse by the parent/caregiver who is the one isolated.
Gail Summers - so like Shelley Duvall in The Shining

That was a different ending ! Quite emotional I love that music that they sometimes play too . The music that played as the women were leaving the prison and travelling in the van . I’m glad Judy let Noelines family have the money. Dear little Children
Dear little children? I'm sure Noleen has been teaching them to rob and cheat at their age by now. No one in that family are innocent.
Poker, Conquian, *Old Maid*
_"It's a card game"_ ← Lol . Great line from Mrs. Barry.
Meg & Paul feels more strongly about & sorry for someone that hits a defenceless child than a shoplifter etc. They both treat Tim with contempt & Paul will make sure Tim doesn't get custody of the kids. How's that for victimisation? They're more worried about Gail than the kids.
14:02 - "I wish I never moved" - well, D-UH, D'Doyyy...that's what I've been thinking since the first screams seeped out of the neighbors' flat. 😅
the casting dept did well with the youngest Bourke girl, in the long shots she looks very much like a miniature version of Leanne :)
17/12/19 - 16:56 - That was a big loud fart, Doreen! 🤣!
16:56 CLASSIC " carry on " moment! Lol
Why the backdrop of the mini-bus for the credits at the end? That seemed a rather random choice!🤔
Old Maid..... it's a card game 😂
Vera cracks me up! Someone should make a satire about this. It really is funny!
all they get is half a sandwich?
🤦🤦 no!!! They get a whole sandwich it's just been cut in half and wrapped in cling film so each half of the sandwich is on top of each other they don't get starved with only half a sandwich!!! 😂😂
That White woman from the factory looks like Francis De La Tour!
+3032l She does indeed.
Yeh I knew she reminded me of someone. Sandy Gore was very good as Mother Ambrose in Brides of Christ.
Sandy's credited as a dialogue coach on Mad Max 2/The Road Warrior 👍
Kay White was brilliant Prisoner character too! 👍
Nice to see the arrival of Kay White
'I offered him my body but he said he was holding out for yours' LOL!
George Mallaby was great as Paul Reid, of all the social workers they had in the show, he was my favourite and Sheila Florence was Consistently brilliant. Can't stand watching Gail Summers, she added nothing to the show, I tend to skip her scenes.
+jiggarypokery I haven't seen all the social workers yet, but definitely like Paul better than Jean!
🥳TRIVIA TIME👏🏼🎉
Noeline Burke’s sister came to leave a message for Noeline. Although uncredited in this particular episode, Noeline’s sister was playing by Joan Millar.
Joan Millar returns in episode 197 as Brenda Latham, Chrissy Latham’s sister in law.
She only appeared in 2 episodes.
I thought she looked familiar
Was Joan Millar related to Maggie Millar the notorious Marie Winter? 👍
@@apkitching387
I'm unsure if they're related or not. But, Millar is not a very common surname. So, what would be the odds of having 2 unrelated people, both with an unusual last name? Unless Millar is as common in Aussie as Jones or Smith are in America.
@@apkitching387
I've looked in several places, but have only found that Maggie goes by both Millar & Miller & was twice divorced with 1 child before 1979. I didn't realize she was as old as she was. Maggie was born in 1941, making her around 39 when she first appears after Bea is transferred to Barnhurst the first time.
@@Nacho-Mamma
Thanks Maggie might have had to change her Miller / Millar name for Equity, quite common for some actors especially when a more familiar actor has their name.
Just realised the lovely Dr. Weissman, Byron Williams, wrote this episode! (and plenty more apparently)
@@NativeMoon its funny that the Burkes don't accept charity or social welfare but are criminals who steal.
When gayle went to wentworth I was like I can’t wait till what Vera says
Gail won't escape the Vera treatment.
Tell you what if Meg moved next to me or tried to make friends id be running for the hills. Everyone she seems to befriend ends up in the slammer.
Because she sticks her nose into everyone's business.
Or they end up in bed with her. She’s a man-mad magnet
says back to prison, but she hasnt been yet
Gone right off Meg sticking up for a child abuser WTF?
She stuck up for the lady who KILLED her husband, why not this? :o)
She feels guilty for her being in gaol. Meg decided it was the husband and reported it and it blew up in her face. She never stays out of anybody's business.
Did Andrew Reynolds playMrs Mangel’s husband Len in neighbours?
Yes he also played the thal alydon in the William hartnell doctor who adventure the daleks in 1963
He was briefly in 'When The Boat Comes In', with James Bolam.
40:24 most of the UK DID eat horse without their knowledge a few months back my family have'nt eaten any red meat since! It was everywhere!
Now I know where I've seen Kay White before; she's a forensic scientist in 'A Cry in the Dark'.
Noline Burke's weasel voice sister is also Chrissie's sister in law.
Awesome ending, I wish they did more like this
WTF Meg? She's annoyed because all Jim can think about is the children. How is it a bad thing to focus mainly on the children in cases like this? His suggestions for Gail's psychiatric treatment don't sound out of line to me. She should be monitored for a while.
Did they reuse the sandwiches from Megs party that were uneaten?
30:21 - "Let's have a bit more discipline than we saw yesterday"😅😅😅😅 She sounds more like a dominatrix as each episode plays.
Murderers in with shoplifters, theives and check forgers.
why couldn't Margo be in bea's circle she one of my favorite character when she isn't being evil
Because Margo is only interesting when she's up to no good.
Because she's evil. Besides, Bea only has weak people in her circle, because Bea is a bully.
Margo sometimes is in Bea's circle. She shows good and bad sides until she's brought back after being released
‘You’re piss weak, Bea’ says Margo in future episodes
The look from the receptionist when Tim sits on her desk.
Joyce as a bus driver.
Joyce to vera... Wanna play old maid??! It's a card game!!!😂
Gone 'arty' with the end credits...
Judy has a good heart.
39:15-21 quite an amusing little shot of life imitating art there lol.
Kblogg 777 that's a great part of the scene!
16:57 LOL.
Mrs Davidson is well in with that Mr Reynolds of the factory
I love when Vera is told no, it just irritates her, lol! Then you see her smirk because she knows somethings gonna go down eventually!
Love the James Dean / Noeline Burke scene around the 39 minute mark! This surely would make James Dean turn in his grave,if he was still alive to see it.
Then he wouldn't be in a grave.
Noeline's more like Rabel without a Cause.
The Screws/Guards food always looks much more apetitizing than the prisoners food is always slop on top of rice.
Vera complains about the traffic but that coach (enough to hold 20 prisoners rather than 6) must have been doing at least 40mph on a clear road...
22:00 - You can tell Erica fancies Mr Reynolds the first time they meet each other. (I know this isn't the first time they met, I forgot to comment about it then). 2/3/20.
Meg! I can't even
20:16, it was ok for Paul Reid to get a message through to Noeline whilst she was in Solitary but not Doreen when she was in solitary over Jock Stewart because it didn't suit the storyline. Love how the prison rules change to accommodate what ever is written in the script.
What lovely little kids. I feel so sorry for them.
Double standards Meg, double standards
I remember Kay White, she's an excellent addition
? !!! (hahaaa!)
They're automatically generated, based on American accents which doesn't work too well for Australian accents.
Erica's got tickets on herself. All Andrew Reynolds did was invite her out for dinner and she goes into one about their relationship is only going to be a professional one. Talk about uptight.
0:56
I think she just watched Shelly Duval in The Shining 😂
It looks like Gail, as she stood up from her bed when talking to Lizzie, had a split up the back of her jeans!
Good for Tim, divorcing her!
The acting is shocking here in the opening
The judge who tried Gail looks like Eric Morecambe.
The actor playing Vince reminds me of David Jason.
@16:56 Ooh Doreen!
