How about sending those in position for peace talks? We could become good mates way before the Afghan Air-Force is a threat. Only when a group is deemed a threat, impossible to make peace with should we then send in drones. Give the younger generation a purpose and link the drones to one of the latest X-box games. Once the mission is complete they can be repurposed, loaded with rubber bullets (a solution to prevent used car tyres going into landfill) and the kids can police parking, social distancing, jay walking, anything passed through parliament can be included on the rubber bullet scheduled. If we can't agree on anything, just nuke us all.
In my time in the Defence force I met some of the greatest people and some of the worst people I have ever met in my life. It certainly was an adventure that you can't have anywhere else but it all depends on which people you have around you at the time.

So if these allegation are proven to be true then he's no hero and his Victoria Cross should be revoked and he should be tried as a war criminal....Also the Australian Government should be paying out compensation to the families of the victims that have been left to deal with the devastation. Korea, Vietnam, Angola, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan etc etc, no unqualified military victory, and no effective and lasting reorganisation of the country or regime invaded. It’s ridiculous for western governments to send troops to these conflicts under terms that have no possibility of realising either military victory or lasting political, social or economic reform, and the alternative of not engaging with rogue states is completely untenable.

*Is that real?* Well, no. Some news outlets ran a story about an alleged "male ban" at Defence Force Recruiting, claiming there was an internal memo specifically halting the recruitment of men. Naturally, the outlet that broke the story couldn't actually publish the memo (despite claiming to have been provided it), even though this makes no sense and would be a complete media coup. Similarly, there's been no evidence of quotas of any kind. Naturally though, many applicants are buying into this myth to justify their lengthy wait times, rather than acknowledge that the adventurous combat roles they're applying for are severely oversubscribed. A quick look at any course photo from Kapooka or any IET school shows that the vast majority of people entering the ADF are young white males, while women accepted into the combat arms are extremely rare. Check their Facebook pages if you don't believe me. *yes in the Military and Police Force too.* Unlike the ADF, the AFP has done it in the past, and I honestly couldn't give a shit. A good police officer is a critical thinker and a communicator, whose most vital tool is their voice. They needed to be trusted by their communities and the people they serve, and it's not really something you can accomplish with a homogenous force of young men without life experience. It's fine - police officers work in teams that are picked according to individual strengths (i.e., you're not going to get two small women paired together, or two big dumb meatheads).

Even back in 1798-1803, the Brits used Scotish gaels, though technically troops, to do similar functions to police in Wicklow during the Irish rebellion. But the mobile part of the army is literally to prevent physical destruction and destroy strongpoints and break up concentrations. News corp. Yeah it is true. Culture problems mean defeat in combat, not interacting in a manner deemed politically incorrect. Whilst I do not doubt that there are some women suited to it, if male culture is a hindrance, than they are not. The old objection beyond the obvious physical differences in capabilities, used to be that women are more inclined to panic, especially in ambush scenarios where everyone panics, and panic is contagious. Men will act completely differently around women panicing and prioritise them etc. But very real they are being inexplicably recruited at deliberately higher levels for no reason of increased effectiveness. It has been a long time since the army genuinely engaged beyond special forces, and rust is setting in.

Experienced a severe back injury whilst on deployment and was subsequently refused compensation by DVA due to the injury being outside legislative guidelines. Have had severe back pain now for over 40 years all as a result of some snotty-nosed public servant making a judgement based solely on ignorance and bias.
This is why we need a royal commission into veteran suicide. This 'independent' commissioner who is best mates with minister of defence wont look at the failings and corruption of DVA that has led to many of the suicides. Government trying to cover up their mistakes as usual.
I left the Army with a back injury from a Bushmaster, the last 5 years I was denied any medical help on my physical injuries. The time I left the Army, I was on my back for 3 months and had to find work where I was struggling to work due to back injury
I hate to tell you this mate, but I got injured (bulged/ruptured my bottom 3 disks) in 90 and have effectively had no support from the gov. 30 years later Im still fucked, physically, psychologically and financially. I could run a combat fitness test with one working leg and do recon squadron work in a sabre (cav not sas) squadron for a couple of years on one working leg and full on sciatica but the defense compensation people were the ones that broke me and made me give up. I couldn't face another interview or another go round of appeals and Admin Appeals Tribunal . So I hope you get better treatment, but it sounds like it hasn't changed. Not surprisng really they make careers out of fucking us, they have 40 years to hone their deny games, and then they hand what they know down to their proteges.

Best thing I ever did was join the army after high school. It taught me great skills and life experiences. When I went to university I was more focused and better equipped to do well.
I trained with the special forces in the Commandos when I was a younger. I can tell you the skills, discipline and resolve. That was instructed into me is priceless and has served me in every area of my life. Life is difficult for all people, the defense force not only prepares individuals for the challenges of a career in the forces. But, also for the challenges life will inevitably throw at an individual. The military will always be an exceptional option for our young people and give them skills and resolve that transcends their time in the forces. I would recommend service to anyone wanting to grow as an individual or be equipped with skills that will lift you above the average if you continue to employ them in civilian life. Military service would be a great solution to 'work for the dole'.

A year ago, I actively encouraged my 20yr old Son to join the ADF, following after my footsteps, and I was gutted when he expressed a disinterest in the Military and wanted to pursue a civilian career. Today I'm thinking he made the right choice!
Never thought I would ever say it, but I would not recommend it either. Not anymore. I started out in the Air Force Cadets as a young teenager, then joined the Royal Australian Navy at age 15, (1969) went to sea in a Destroyer at age 16 deploying to Sth East and Far East Asia. Spent the next decade and a half doing Multiple overseas operational deployments (11) mostly in Asia but including a couple to the Mid East. There's a lot more, but not worth going into here. Except now my government has kicked me to the curb where because I went to live overseas in my wife's home country on my meagre 21 year Permanent Navy DFRDB Comsuper Pension which I bought and paid for and even though I continued to pay the going rate of tax on this so-called 'Pension' up until the age of 60, I am told now that I am not entitled to anything - No Medicare, no aged benefits of any kind - NOTHING! They have treated me like dirt actually, and worse, what hurts most of all, the malevolent Public Servant bastards did it with glee, they enjoyed doing it! My Government is nothing but a thief! I intend to returning the medals I was awarded. Worthless trinkets they are to me now. No more ANZAC Days for me, even though every male member of my family (5) were ANZACs and my father WW2. I have merely gone from being a dirty common low sailor to a deplorable old white man. What an epitaph to look forward to..

My Grandfather was a WW1 veteran, my uncle's were WW2 veterans, my father trained for Korea 3 years, it ended before he had to go. I was a sargent in the cadets at 16years. My grandfather was proud of me, but, took me aside & explained in details all about WAR & the corrupt politics & people, war Lord families & shadow goverments, that creat these wars for their own evil gain. He was & is a MAN of GOD, he died in 1984, still had shrapnel scatted through his body from bullets & bombs, calcified chipped bone fragments the size of golf balls in this legs. He had a hole through his forehead, he could put his finger through, where he was stabbed with a bayonet, & survived. He was 14years, when he joined, too see the world they told them, he said, straight to the front line in France. He survived the hole war as a sharp shooter & horsemen etc. He survived the meat mincer, in the last week of WW1. All surviving MEN were told to run at a line of machine gun, snippets, tanks, etc, full open fire, artillery fire thicker than smoke. He & six others survived in their battalion, they were awarded 1 bravery Mendel amongst the 7, handed to the first across the line. This was done, too use up the left over amo & bombs & kill of as many men who survived the war before it ended. My grandfather carried a small Bible over his heart, he believed in GOD, I still have his Bible, the writing so small I don't know how he read it. He's advice to me before he died. DONT TRUST POLICE. I was surfing round an island called Sumbawa, on the day before I was flying to Timor, in the town of Dompoo, in the morning I was swept into a huge festival with the locals. It was the first time I had a direct situation with Muslims. Must of been a million of them turned up at once, I explain the scene as a carpet of black heads, as fare as the eye can see, in all directions. Being taller looking over them. As I walked along the main road with the flow, I was being followed by Muslims in very colorfull silk looking dress, carrying long curved swords at hand. At the same time a convoy of military open trucks, with prisoners tied up, kneeling down with their hands tied back. Each prisoner had a solider behind him with a hand gun shooting blanks at the back of their heads. They also had soldiers with machine gun fireing into the air, probably blanks as well, maybe ? I got to a corner cross rd, & leant against a brick wall, the colorful Muslims with swords stood in a semi circle in front of me. The first truck stoped & a ranking solder pointed a pistol at me & the colorful Muslim half pulled their swords. Three local girls appeared beside me through the brick wall, two on my right side, one on my left, the masses all went quiet at once, a million of them, you could here a pin drop. The most attractive on my right, ask me, you must be Australian, I said yes, she told the soilder pointing the pistol at me, he smiled & asked her to ask me why I was not afraid, she asked me, why I was not afraid, I said afraid of what. She said no white man would never dare walk our streets on our day of independence. Well, I said, no one's told me this. So next thing the gun man with a smile on his face & machine gunners in the convoy, put there weapons in the air started shooting, the color full one's put their swords back in their sheaths, & the masses erupted into celebration. The hole experience that day was surreal to me at the time, I really dident realize the danger I was facing, it all happens s quickly. Because I showed no fear in that moment, they respected me. For the rest of that day & evening I was treated well, escorted around by the 3 woman who stayed, one each side & one behind me. At times people would run up to me to touch my head, I was never hurt. The next day I flew out, to Timor, haven't been back to Indonesia since. At that point I knew nothing of Islam Muslims, I DO NOW !

All so worked in shearing shed randomly 8/18years fleecing. From 8years after school, on building sitesI was cleaning brickies shovels & wheelbarrow, rolling up hoses & raking brick walls, in exchange for coke, fanta, lemonade, bottles. Then cashed them in at the local milk bar, two Bob each. I could make $50.00 a week in the mid 70s, lots of houses being built in my area. Working as a trades man, I'm 52years now, my lower backs warn out, my left hip ache constantly, broken right foot, dislocated left shoulder, torn ligerments in right shoulder, broken wrist, 3 broken noses, sparing & pub brawls, don't drink at pubs any more, $8.00 a schooner, rip off. Well I've got a full life, 3 lads & a staunched Hungarian Misses, I went the import, a refreshing change to what's on offer in Australia these days. At home life's good. I have land in NSW, lost 2 caravans, a good old land cruiser & full shipping container, glad I wasent there with the family. I got of track a bit, trades men farmers, are not looked after enough in this country, we are warn out by 50years hard work. Pen pushing politicians, white collar maggots, that benefit from our skills are disprespectfull unappreciat too, the hard working men & woman in this country.
I served in infantry when I was 18 years old straight after high school I got diagnosed with PTSD at age 20 and still served, this year I hit 22 I decided not to serve any longer and I can tell you military did not help me transition, I still get flashbacks and all defence force told me is we can help you with a resume so you can find a job....
I am a military veteran...I have a permanent neck injury and of course deal with it as we know sh..t happens!... but the government near had me on the street!! I used my super to survive and retrained at my own cost (which I would prefer anyway) I now work to help others suffering in life! This then turn my experience around for some good! The politicians are very good at giving themselves a life pension...Why? We need to stand together and hold our leaders accountable!

Being ex military i have learnt the meaning of expendable. I was injured due to exposure to toxic chemicals. I am on medication for life. The army just kicked me out without any support. As ex infantry it is very difficult to find skills that are transferable to civilian life. It took me 30 years to finally get DVA and dept of defence to recognise that my condition was caused by my service. I received a little bit of compensation but it hasn't covered what I paid out of my pocket for my treatment. Once you are injured and unfit for duty they dont want to help. Motto for DVA "Delay, Deny until they die". Don't let this happen to you.
You’re only expendable because of the type of market system we live in, which throws people to the curb once their no longer “useful”. Don’t hate the player, hate the game (capitalism).
After serving 15 + years I was left without any qualification or skills that could be used in the real world. At near 50 years of age I was unemployable. I did some training and now run my own business. I can tell you it doesn’t always end so well for veterans often it ends in homelessness, and suicide. When you have people like Ben Roberts Smith and Jackie Lambie, people who once lived and loved the ADF and are now warning against it, you realise that something is very very wrong. An organisation that once prized mateship above all else now values self promotion above all else.
@John No the RSL do not. They can’t even advocate on a DVA claim. I was. Artillery in the Army and 11 yrs Movements in the Airforce. Left with No civilian qualifications, so I purchased my own business. Thanks for nothing! after nearly 19 yrs service!
I wish I could have joined the military in my 20's but due to injuries I couldn't. The military is great, it builds character and resilience - you get taught information which is practical and far more advanced than civilian education and the whole time you are getting paid to learn by the best in the world. Your health is looked after and paid for. There are so many avenues of progression. The only negative is post-service treatment of military members/veterans. This is not the fault of the military. This is the fault of the federal and state governments. The bureaucratic nonsense, the lack of support outside the military community. These people are extremely valuable members of society. I just did a basic security course and met people with years of experience in conflict and they are the best people I have ever met.
Should also mention the fact that there is no equal treatment in the ADF. Standards and such vary depending on gender and age even when doing the exact same job. Should be the one standard for everyone. Fitness and academic.
Upon discovering the toxic pile of shit, that the ADF is and discharging from it, all I wanted was to work a real job and make a genuine contribution to society. The ADF robbed me of my capacity to do this. The robbed me of it. They knew they were robbing me of it and when I left the ADF, they failed to inform me of what they had done. They failed to warn me of the difficulty that I would face. They did not warn me before joining “or” after leaving, because if ANYONE knew what has to be done to a person, to make them “capable” of killing and how much it decimates their capacity to function, no-one would tolerate the existence of the military, let alone sign up for it. No-one would vote for govts, who support the existence of the military. We have been deceived by the very corrupt interests behind the existence of the military and this deception has brought about tremendous suffering, to the people who were good enough to risk and/or give their lives, for the “would be” protection of others. The ADF, along with the existence of the military world-wide, is a hideous lie and one that has brought about enormous, unnecessary tragedy and we must boycott ALL govts and govt systems which support the existence of the military and military industrial complex.
My biggest regret in life is I had major depression at 17 and thought the army would fix it, I passed boot camp but my depression was still there and I was discharged. I wish I could do it again but at 38 even tho I'm fit and healthy I wouldn't be accepted.

Damn. I mean, I totally agree, since my bro who was in the Army for 6 years and now has SERIOUS ptsd doesn't get much support. But I feel like whilst total enlistment is not something I would recommend, being in the reserves like I am is 100% something I would recommend to ANY young person. Teaches you SO much discipline, great work ethic, and helps you learn to work well in a team with anyone. And sure, I do find it hard to do a full time job along side it, but it's worth it.

My older brother served many years in the ADF and serve overseas on operations. He was dedicated but experienced significant injury mainly to his back. Today he lives with these issues that effects his life in a detrimental way but the ADF did nothing to help him or support him with these issues. He warns others to never join.

I gave 8 years of my life as a solider, I was medically discharged and have had to fight tooth and nail with DVA for appropriate care. If I could go back, I would still serve as a soldier. I just want to be looked after better regarding the I juries I have sustained.because I served in the 90s and was not deployed I am looked after under a different act, I cannot access a military pension or gold card. My injuries are significant and require constant care, my wife has to shower me and help me dress, but I am not eligible for a military pension. I feel extremely let down by the military and the government for crating the act I am currently under.
Yeah even though there is less than 10 per cent females you have to go about 5 pages in before you even see a man on their recruiting site and about 10 pages in before you see a combat role ( most people still go in the infantry) its join the army become a dental nurse, a forklift driver, a radio operator, a computer programer, a medic etc etc, oh and um um ah mm a rifleman. Who ever is incharge of this shit campaign and image is an absolute fool and thinks we are all fools to.

Well I have served and I will comment. People have a right to cast their opinions. The last time the ADF actually was involved in a conflict that was defending their country was ww2 in PNG. Everything since then has been a colossal waste of money and lives.

@@Rayshoesmith2023 no I was told openly by a recruiter that there are gender quotas this was all before I had even had an interview/ you session I was also made to jump through a number of hoops that my female best friend didn't despite having the same medical condition (to which defence have ghosted me for over a year now despite constant emails) she also had the advantage of doing female only PFA training which offered to men period, and on this session/actual PFA's she told me there were females who struggled to do a single push been given multiple chances if that were me or a male we'd have our asses chewed off so tell me again how there are no gender/race quotas or preferential treatment

I never recommend serving in the Canadian Armed Forces because it is not the worth the risk of being injured seriously then sentenced to chronic mistreatment both in the military & by veterans affairs after release. I can’t speak to the situation in other countries, but here in Canada the situation is getting worse, not better. I would never discourage someone from joining the CAF but I always share my cautionary tale.
Send all politicians to the front line for a month. Only then, would they know the trauma that a soldier faces on the front line. Also remove all diversity quotas. The diversity quota in my view would be against the discrimination laws. Appitude, physical and physiologically fitness should be the only criteria when applying to enter the ADF.

The ADF is a good institution to be in, but only if you have no where else to be, or no other suitible employment prospects in your life. You can make a good career out of it, but you can also have arsehole commanders - workplace rank pulling bullies in the ADF, who abuse their power and authority, ruin your career and morale and your prospects of wanting to remain in the ADF, which evidently leads to you discharging.
The whole SASR war crimes thing is another thing where the leadrship failed the diggers. The leadership is responsible for the actions of their people and for putting in place mechanisms to detect and prevent any unlawful behaviour. When leadership fail in those duties they are supposed to be held responsible and accountable - they are supposed to be charged and tried to ascertain their level of responsibility. If they were decent leaders with any moral courage, they'd step forward and say "this was my fault" Army leaders have always been about their careers more than their people - there were exceptions, but for the most part, career, family, other officers, then the other ranks.

My mates son applied and when he got to the interview stage he was asked "what are your political leanings?" He answered "im a conservative". He was then rejected from joining the army in any role.

In my time in the Defence force I met some of the greatest people and some of the worst people I have ever met in my life. It certainly was an adventure that you can't have anywhere else but it all depends on which people you have around you at the time.

Korea, Vietnam, Angola, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan etc etc, no unqualified military victory, and no effective and lasting reorganisation of the country or regime invaded. It’s ridiculous for western governments to send troops to these conflicts under terms that have no possibility of realising either military victory or lasting political, social or economic reform, and the alternative of not engaging with rogue states is completely untenable.

Well, no. Some news outlets ran a story about an alleged "male ban" at Defence Force Recruiting, claiming there was an internal memo specifically halting the recruitment of men.
Naturally, the outlet that broke the story couldn't actually publish the memo (despite claiming to have been provided it), even though this makes no sense and would be a complete media coup. Similarly, there's been no evidence of quotas of any kind. Naturally though, many applicants are buying into this myth to justify their lengthy wait times, rather than acknowledge that the adventurous combat roles they're applying for are severely oversubscribed.
A quick look at any course photo from Kapooka or any IET school shows that the vast majority of people entering the ADF are young white males, while women accepted into the combat arms are extremely rare. Check their Facebook pages if you don't believe me.

A good police officer is a critical thinker and a communicator, whose most vital tool is their voice. They needed to be trusted by their communities and the people they serve, and it's not really something you can accomplish with a homogenous force of young men without life experience. It's fine - police officers work in teams that are picked according to individual strengths (i.e., you're not going to get two small women paired together, or two big dumb meatheads).

Even back in 1798-1803, the Brits used Scotish gaels, though technically troops, to do similar functions to police in Wicklow during the Irish rebellion. It is just common sense, they don't tread on toes that don't need trodden on etc. Jeez even the Spartans applied similar principles.
But the mobile part of the army is literally to prevent physical destruction and destroy strongpoints and break up concentrations. Dodgy politicised diversity science franchised from the USA should be analysed, but never considered as produced independent of a political intent. Yeah it is true. Culture problems mean defeat in combat, not interacting in a manner deemed politically incorrect.
Whilst I do not doubt that there are some women suited to it, if male culture is a hindrance, than they are not. The old objection beyond the obvious physical differences in capabilities, used to be that women are more inclined to panic, especially in ambush scenarios where everyone panics, and panic is contagious. Men will act completely differently around women panicing and prioritise them etc.
But very real they are being inexplicably recruited at deliberately higher levels for no reason of increased effectiveness. It has been a long time since the army genuinely engaged beyond special forces, and rust is setting in.

Experienced a severe back injury whilst on deployment and was subsequently refused compensation by DVA due to the injury being outside legislative guidelines. Have had severe back pain now for over 40 years all as a result of some snotty-nosed public servant making a judgement based solely on ignorance and bias.
This is why we need a royal commission into veteran suicide. This 'independent' commissioner who is best mates with minister of defence wont look at the failings and corruption of DVA that has led to many of the suicides. Government trying to cover up their mistakes as usual.

I left the Army with a back injury from a Bushmaster, the last 5 years I was denied any medical help on my physical injuries. The time I left the Army, I was on my back for 3 months and had to find work where I was struggling to work due to back injury
I hate to tell you this mate, but I got injured (bulged/ruptured my bottom 3 disks) in 90 and have effectively had no support from the gov. 30 years later Im still fucked, physically, psychologically and financially. I could run a combat fitness test with one working leg and do recon squadron work in a sabre (cav not sas) squadron for a couple of years on one working leg and full on sciatica but the defense compensation people were the ones that broke me and made me give up. I couldn't face another interview or another go round of appeals and Admin Appeals Tribunal .
So I hope you get better treatment, but it sounds like it hasn't changed.

I trained with the special forces in the Commandos when I was a younger. I can tell you the skills, discipline and resolve. That was instructed into me is priceless and has served me in every area of my life. Life is difficult for all people, the defense force not only prepares individuals for the challenges of a career in the forces. But, also for the challenges life will inevitably throw at an individual. The military will always be an exceptional option for our young people and give them skills and resolve that transcends their time in the forces. I would recommend service to anyone wanting to grow as an individual or be equipped with skills that will lift you above the average if you continue to employ them in civilian life. Military service would be a great solution to 'work for the dole'.

A year ago, I actively encouraged my 20yr old Son to join the ADF, following after my footsteps, and I was gutted when he expressed a disinterest in the Military and wanted to pursue a civilian career. Today I'm thinking he made the right choice!
Never thought I would ever say it, but I would not recommend it either. Not anymore. I started out in the Air Force Cadets as a young teenager, then joined the Royal Australian Navy at age 15, (1969) went to sea in a Destroyer at age 16 deploying to Sth East and Far East Asia. Spent the next decade and a half doing Multiple overseas operational deployments (11) mostly in Asia but including a couple to the Mid East. There's a lot more, but not worth going into here. Except now my government has kicked me to the curb where because I went to live overseas in my wife's home country on my meagre 21 year Permanent Navy DFRDB Comsuper Pension which I bought and paid for and even though I continued to pay the going rate of tax on this so-called 'Pension' up until the age of 60, I am told now that I am not entitled to anything - No Medicare, no aged benefits of any kind - NOTHING! They have treated me like dirt actually, and worse, what hurts most of all, the malevolent Public Servant bastards did it with glee, they enjoyed doing it! My Government is nothing but a thief! I intend to returning the medals I was awarded. Worthless trinkets they are to me now. No more ANZAC Days for me, even though every male member of my family (5) were ANZACs and my father WW2. I have merely gone from being a dirty common low sailor to a deplorable old white man. What an epitaph to look forward to..

I agree, I have done a number of years in the ADF, it is no longer a good option for young people in Australia.
My Grandfather was a WW1 veteran, my uncle's were WW2 veterans, my father trained for Korea 3 years, it ended before he had to go. I was a sargent in the cadets at 16years. My grandfather was proud of me, but, took me aside & explained in details all about WAR & the corrupt politics & people, war Lord families & shadow goverments, that creat these wars for their own evil gain. He was & is a MAN of GOD, he died in 1984, still had shrapnel scatted through his body from bullets & bombs, calcified chipped bone fragments the size of golf balls in this legs. He had a hole through his forehead, he could put his finger through, where he was stabbed with a bayonet, & survived. He was 14years, when he joined, too see the world they told them, he said, straight to the front line in France. He survived the hole war as a sharp shooter & horsemen etc. He survived the meat mincer, in the last week of WW1. All surviving MEN were told to run at a line of machine gun, snippets, tanks, etc, full open fire, artillery fire thicker than smoke. He & six others survived in their battalion, they were awarded 1 bravery Mendel amongst the 7, handed to the first across the line.
This was done, too use up the left over amo & bombs & kill of as many men who survived the war before it ended. My grandfather carried a small Bible over his heart, he believed in GOD, I still have his Bible, the writing so small I don't know how he read it.
He's advice to me before he died.

In 1991 I was traveling through Indonesia surfing & checking out the islands. I was surfing round an island called Sumbawa, on the day before I was flying to Timor, in the town of Dompoo, in the morning I was swept into a huge festival with the locals. It was the first time I had a direct situation with Muslims. Must of been a million of them turned up at once, I explain the scene as a carpet of black heads, as fare as the eye can see, in all directions. Being taller looking over them. As I walked along the main road with the flow, I was being followed by Muslims in very colorfull silk looking dress, carrying long curved swords at hand. At the same time a convoy of military open trucks, with prisoners tied up, kneeling down with their hands tied back. Each prisoner had a solider behind him with a hand gun shooting blanks at the back of their heads. They also had soldiers with machine gun fireing into the air, probably blanks as well, maybe ? I got to a corner cross rd, & leant against a brick wall, the colorful Muslims with swords stood in a semi circle in front of me. The first truck stoped & a ranking solder pointed a pistol at me & the colorful Muslim half pulled their swords. Three local girls appeared beside me through the brick wall, two on my right side, one on my left, the masses all went quiet at once, a million of them, you could here a pin drop. The most attractive on my right, ask me, you must be Australian, I said yes, she told the soilder pointing the pistol at me, he smiled & asked her to ask me why I was not afraid, she asked me, why I was not afraid, I said afraid of what. She said no white man would never dare walk our streets on our day of independence. Well, I said, no one's told me this.
So next thing the gun man with a smile on his face & machine gunners in the convoy, put there weapons in the air started shooting, the color full one's put their swords back in their sheaths, & the masses erupted into celebration.
The hole experience that day was surreal to me at the time, I really dident realize the danger I was facing, it all happens s quickly.
Because I showed no fear in that moment, they respected me.
For the rest of that day & evening I was treated well, escorted around by the 3 woman who stayed, one each side & one behind me. At times people would run up to me to touch my head, I was never hurt. The next day I flew out, to Timor, haven't been back to Indonesia since.
At that point I knew nothing of Islam Muslims,

Well I've got a full life, 3 lads & a staunched Hungarian Misses, I went the import, a refreshing change to what's on offer in Australia these days. At home life's good. I have land in NSW, lost 2 caravans, a good old land cruiser & full shipping container, glad I wasent there with the family.
I got of track a bit, trades men farmers, are not looked after enough in this country, we are warn out by 50years hard work. Pen pushing politicians, white collar maggots, that benefit from our skills are disprespectfull unappreciat too, the hard working men & woman in this country.

I served in infantry when I was 18 years old straight after high school I got diagnosed with PTSD at age 20 and still served, this year I hit 22 I decided not to serve any longer and I can tell you military did not help me transition, I still get flashbacks and all defence force told me is we can help you with a resume so you can find a job....

I am a military veteran...I have a permanent neck injury and of course deal with it as we know sh..t happens!... but the government near had me on the street!! I used my super to survive and retrained at my own cost (which I would prefer anyway) I now work to help others suffering in life! This then turn my experience around for some good! The politicians are very good at giving themselves a life pension...Why? We need to stand together and hold our leaders accountable!

Being ex military i have learnt the meaning of expendable. I was injured due to exposure to toxic chemicals. I am on medication for life. The army just kicked me out without any support. As ex infantry it is very difficult to find skills that are transferable to civilian life. It took me 30 years to finally get DVA and dept of defence to recognise that my condition was caused by my service. I received a little bit of compensation but it hasn't covered what I paid out of my pocket for my treatment.
Once you are injured and unfit for duty they dont want to help. Motto for DVA "Delay, Deny until they die".
Don't let this happen to you.

After serving 15 + years I was left without any qualification or skills that could be used in the real world. At near 50 years of age I was unemployable. I did some training and now run my own business. I can tell you it doesn’t always end so well for veterans often it ends in homelessness, and suicide. When you have people like Ben Roberts Smith and Jackie Lambie, people who once lived and loved the ADF and are now warning against it, you realise that something is very very wrong. An organisation that once prized mateship above all else now values self promotion above all else.
@John No the RSL do not. They can’t even advocate on a DVA claim. I was. Artillery in the Army and 11 yrs Movements in the Airforce. Left with No civilian qualifications, so I purchased my own business. Thanks for nothing! after nearly 19 yrs service!

I wish I could have joined the military in my 20's but due to injuries I couldn't. The military is great, it builds character and resilience - you get taught information which is practical and far more advanced than civilian education and the whole time you are getting paid to learn by the best in the world. Your health is looked after and paid for. There are so many avenues of progression.
The only negative is post-service treatment of military members/veterans. This is not the fault of the military. This is the fault of the federal and state governments. The bureaucratic nonsense, the lack of support outside the military community. These people are extremely valuable members of society. I just did a basic security course and met people with years of experience in conflict and they are the best people I have ever met.
Just so you know brave lads some of us have your back. Lest we forget.

Should also mention the fact that there is no equal treatment in the ADF. Standards and such vary depending on gender and age even when doing the exact same job. Should be the one standard for everyone. Fitness and academic.
Upon discovering the toxic pile of shit, that the ADF is and discharging from it, all I wanted was to work a real job and make a genuine contribution to society.
The ADF robbed me of my capacity to do this. The robbed me of it. They knew they were robbing me of it and when I left the ADF, they failed to inform me of what they had done. They failed to warn me of the difficulty that I would face.
They did not warn me before joining “or” after leaving, because if ANYONE knew what has to be done to a person, to make them “capable” of killing and how much it decimates their capacity to function, no-one would tolerate the existence of the military, let alone sign up for it.
No-one would vote for govts, who support the existence of the military.
We have been deceived by the very corrupt interests behind the existence of the military and this deception has brought about tremendous suffering, to the people who were good enough to risk and/or give their lives, for the “would be” protection of others.
The ADF, along with the existence of the military world-wide, is a hideous lie and one that has brought about enormous, unnecessary tragedy and we must boycott ALL govts and govt systems which support the existence of the military and military industrial complex.
My biggest regret in life is I had major depression at 17 and thought the army would fix it, I passed boot camp but my depression was still there and I was discharged. I wish I could do it again but at 38 even tho I'm fit and healthy I wouldn't be accepted.

38 is not too old to join the ADF. Many people join in their 30s and 40s and some even join in their 50s.

Damn. I mean, I totally agree, since my bro who was in the Army for 6 years and now has SERIOUS ptsd doesn't get much support. But I feel like whilst total enlistment is not something I would recommend, being in the reserves like I am is 100% something I would recommend to ANY young person. Teaches you SO much discipline, great work ethic, and helps you learn to work well in a team with anyone. And sure, I do find it hard to do a full time job along side it, but it's worth it.
The upper echelon of today's army is a disgrace to the memory of the fallen. The way this is being handled is 'conduct unbecoming' and the media's role has not gone unnoticed.

My older brother served many years in the ADF and serve overseas on operations. He was dedicated but experienced significant injury mainly to his back. Today he lives with these issues that effects his life in a detrimental way but the ADF did nothing to help him or support him with these issues. He warns others to never join.

Why they called "defense forces" if they serve in another country, should be more like offence forces or occupational forces.
I gave 8 years of my life as a solider, I was medically discharged and have had to fight tooth and nail with DVA for appropriate care. If I could go back, I would still serve as a soldier. I just want to be looked after better regarding the I juries I have sustained.because I served in the 90s and was not deployed I am looked after under a different act, I cannot access a military pension or gold card. My injuries are significant and require constant care, my wife has to shower me and help me dress, but I am not eligible for a military pension. I feel extremely let down by the military and the government for crating the act I am currently under.

Yeah even though there is less than 10 per cent females you have to go about 5 pages in before you even see a man on their recruiting site and about 10 pages in before you see a combat role ( most people still go in the infantry) its join the army become a dental nurse, a forklift driver, a radio operator, a computer programer, a medic etc etc, oh and um um ah mm a rifleman. Who ever is incharge of this shit campaign and image is an absolute fool and thinks we are all fools to.

The last time the ADF actually was involved in a conflict that was defending their country was ww2 in PNG. Everything since then has been a colossal waste of money and lives.

It’s not right for any soldier to be dropped in the middle of a battle field & expect you all to defeat an unknown enemy without Collateral Damage as they call it. Maybe there was one or two incidents definitely outside the “Game Rules” but they should not smear the whole Regiment publicly. Can’t fight a war with your hands tied behind your back by shiny pants politicians. This all was similar to Diggers (and G.I.s) returning from Vietnam. The enemy could by anyone of whatever age shoot you in the back or drop a grenade or I.E.D. in your hip pocket.

It looks like veterans everywhere feel the pain American VA sucks aswell I got compensation for certain injuries others not service connected they say but I’m still more fortunate than others some never got help.
Another thing I never ever saw my Dad cry, but the day I went into town Brisbane city to join the airforce, it was the first time in my life i ever seen my father cry, and now im near 60 I more then fully understand, god bless all that protect us, as we are forever so grateful ❤

@@Rayshoesmith2023 no I was told openly by a recruiter that there are gender quotas this was all before I had even had an interview/ you session I was also made to jump through a number of hoops that my female best friend didn't despite having the same medical condition (to which defence have ghosted me for over a year now despite constant emails) she also had the advantage of doing female only PFA training which offered to men period, and on this session/actual PFA's she told me there were females who struggled to do a single push been given multiple chances if that were me or a male we'd have our asses chewed off so tell me again how there are no gender/race quotas or preferential treatment

His words resonate here in Canada too. I never recommend serving in the Canadian Armed Forces because it is not the worth the risk of being injured seriously then sentenced to chronic mistreatment both in the military & by veterans affairs after release. I can’t speak to the situation in other countries, but here in Canada the situation is getting worse, not better. I would never discourage someone from joining the CAF but I always share my cautionary tale.

Send all politicians to the front line for a month. Only then, would they know the trauma that a soldier faces on the front line. Also remove all diversity quotas. The diversity quota in my view would be against the discrimination laws. Appitude, physical and physiologically fitness should be the only criteria when applying to enter the ADF.
When a Christmas casual who just got scolded by a customer for misplacing lay by items- is more looked after and concerned for by their superiors that those who have served in the army seem to be.

The ADF is a good institution to be in, but only if you have no where else to be, or no other suitible employment prospects in your life. You can make a good career out of it, but you can also have arsehole commanders - workplace rank pulling bullies in the ADF, who abuse their power and authority, ruin your career and morale and your prospects of wanting to remain in the ADF, which evidently leads to you discharging.
I was considering joining the adf but the way the top brass are treating SAS, treating former veterans is absolutely disgraceful.

The whole SASR war crimes thing is another thing where the leadrship failed the diggers. The leadership is responsible for the actions of their people and for putting in place mechanisms to detect and prevent any unlawful behaviour. When leadership fail in those duties they are supposed to be held responsible and accountable - they are supposed to be charged and tried to ascertain their level of responsibility.
If they were decent leaders with any moral courage, they'd step forward and say "this was my fault"
Army leaders have always been about their careers more than their people - there were exceptions, but for the most part, career, family, other officers, then the other ranks.

This bloke has been accused by his own unit of kicking an innocent bloke down a hill then executing him. He's under investigation, no wonder he wishes he was never in the army.
He’s not the first and he’s not the last but is still innocent until proven guilty also depends on what the rules of engagement were at the time of the operation that this supposedly happened...people were shot just for wearing camo jackets in Afghanistan or for ridding motorbikes in certain parts of the country ..if you were between 16 and 40 years of age in a war zone you are considered a target or just for digging trench on your property...farmers were shot in there on Fields because they had tools that could be used to hurt soldiers working there way though the area...

My mates son applied and when he got to the interview stage he was asked "what are your political leanings?" He answered "im a conservative". He was then rejected from joining the army in any role.

@M C I wouldn’t call for the dismantling of the SAS which is ridiculous, that regiment keeps the country safe in other circumstances, I will say that it is a disgrace what has happened and I’m proud of the investigation top brass for how they are handling this. It would never be the same in the US, war criminals have been let off the hook by trump (Edward Gallagher) the majority of Australian troops have done and continue to do a good job but this is a total disgrace and all the troopers who bought into this criminal activity deserve the book thrown at them as an example.
