    Eleven plus years with YNAB4 and I've NEVER had a "messy" YNAB. I import *nothing*. I manually enter every transaction. If a receipt is not offered on a purchase I stand off to the side and enter it in the mobile app right then and there. I reconcile against my checking and CC statements twice a month, on the 15th and the last day of the month, and then, once those are all done TO THE PENNY, I pay all outstanding bills and zero out all CCs....and I've been doing that since Aug 2013.

      I am grateful for your comment today. All the behaviors you describe are so relatable. Because financial responsibility has always been an issue with me I reconcile my checking account DAILY. Doing this helps me to not only stay on track but ensures (but does not guarantee) that I stay true to myself. YNAB continues to be an integral part of my financial life.

      I think I need to start fresh and unlink my bank accounts. It worked better when I did it manually.

    9:35 "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good" is a great quote that applies here. I often struggle with perfection getting in the way of me completing projects but this is always a helpful reminder.

    That was a good video. YNAB is so comforting. It helps you know there is a plan for everything. My husband’s tooth needs a root canal. At first it was just charge it. Then I found the money and now it’s all good.

      How sad would it be to have to keep paying off the lame root canal for a year or more 😢

    On the fresh start and past data on thing, I started a new budget just for net worth which I update quarterly. No transactions or bank info there. At the beginning, I did ‘fake’ input transactions for starting balances. I reconcile quarterly with current balances and just let YNAB do a reconciliation adjustment. Super easy way to see net worth over longer period, then fresh start main budget whenever I want.

    I needed to hear both of these personal stories. For the first time ever I have a 1 year old budget since being introduced to YNAB in 2016. And have enough history to know damn... I can't afford my past lifestyle. Now figuring out changes to continue to grow and hope for a budget that has a little more fun.

    I watched this episode twice just to hear Ernie say the goal of your budget is NOT perfection. But rather (as I interpret), it is to establish, resetablish, change, direction based on your life as is. As a YNABer just one year in after months of tinkering, renewing, and reflecting on our actual priorities, I find myself too rigid in my approach to YNAB right now. I need to stop categorizing in the middle of a conversation w a friend at the coffee shop!! I need to stop hounding my husband for the occassional & massive local beer purchase and just accept that as a newly discovered category. Thanks, Hannah! Thanks, Ernie!

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  Місяць тому +2

      Amen!! He's so right, and I love your revelation! We also say your spending plan is LIVING-it's expected to change and morph and adjust on the regular! This is just more proof that flexibility is the key to a successful and fulfilling spending plan!

    Got you bet Ernie ! Been YNABing transactions since 2010 ! BUT now it’s not just a transaction recorder it’s the whole enchilada! We are actually using it as a couple every time we get paid and funding all ! Targets are made for our crazy amount of categories ! My husband finally figured out credit cards ( huge learning curves ) it’s all clicking now ! And we are NOT negative ! Thanks to all of you and the videos ! Hannah ! Ben ! Everyone ! ❤

    Try not to laugh at Ernie's answers. They're valid answers and laughing could make someone feel ashamed or not confident going forward.
    Thanks Ernie for your encouragement to those who feel like they are struggling and can fresh start anytime 100/100 times!

    This is my problem, I spend on things I need on credit cards, and when my check comes I end up spending hundreds on covering the overspend and then not enough for the actual bills.
    I relate to this, logging in the bank account and thinking wow, that's a lot of money! my account has never been that high! My account was always $0 before payday, and now I have money assigned for different things some money stays in there regardless. As I need the money to pay things.

      Ha! Oh, that would be AMAZING. No, these are just some of his favorites! He's got Hannah McBeth's whole Partee series, a bunch of Passion Test Flights, some Lunas, and a few of his favorite designs. But honestly, he moved away from Discraft a year, maybe two years ago. Now he has every Kristin disc imaginable! Just got two Pures in the mail this week 🤦🏻‍♀️ You definitely cannot deny we're a disc golf household over here 😂 Spent our one-year wedding anniversary at Worlds 🙃

    I don't do many Spit Transactions. I sort what's in my basket into Groceries and Household and then I have the checkout person ring them up separately and some times even on different CCs. 8^)

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  Місяць тому

      Interesting! Do you have kids in school, maybe? End of the year rush? Prepping for summer? OR, if you're like me you're CRAVING that summer sun and warmth and maybe you're experiencing seasonal "senioritis" and barely hanging on as you wait for summer to finally arrive. Fascinating observation! Curious if there's anything you might try to combat that next year!

    I think people fall off the YNAB wagon because they don't want to look at the choices they are making in regards to their spending. They aren't ready to be accountable. I think that was a good descriptor Ernie used- looking forward instead of backwards. If this clicks for people it may help them. I am like Ernie in that I also have never had a messy YNAB in 6 years of using it and I have my daily routine. Get up, let dogs out, get coffee and straight to my computer so the dogs and I can YNAB. Vacations can definitely be the challenge. I manually enter everything and would never change that.

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  28 днів тому

      It's easy to start telling yourself "whoops, shouldn't have spent on that" and "uh oh, probably didn't need to spend on that" and find yourself slowly picking up speed while tumbling down a hill of self-guilt and shame. But truly, the best thing we can do for ourselves is reflect, take away what we want to learn from that experience, and just move right on along! Lately I'm trying to ask that question of "does this spending really align with how me and my family want to be spending our money" and really sitting on that for a solid 10+ seconds before purchasing anything. It's a slow habit to build, but it's helped me click "remove from cart" enough times already that it's a habit I'll be keeping up with! YNAB is a lot more fun to stay on top of when you feel aligned in your spending... the unalignment is when I personally find myself starting to avert eyes and avoid... 🫠

    Honestly, this is such micromanagement and need for control. Maybe some people need that. The power is being proactive vs reactive. You can never have a plan for "everything". Enter transactions once a week and have a conversation with your spouse. Move on to bigger and better things. Also past data is extremely helpful in honing in maintenance costs of a house, a car, health care, etc. I think this is a psychological discussion. People that need to be able to forgive themselves and move on need this. Good for them, they must need it to get through their life. I think most of us don't.

    The idea that you can't have any debt while being a good YNABer is a bit silly. Obviously, it would be great if YNAB could allow us all to buy cars in cash but it's not necessarily realistic.

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  28 днів тому +1

      Agreed! Hilariously, the same week this video was posted my car died and, while we had saved up a big enough chunk to put 66% down on a new one, we covered the other 34% in a car loan. Life is gonna life on us, and it's EXPENSIVE, but at least YNAB helps us lay out the perfect plan to make sure we KNOW we're still in control and can get all our expenses covered stress-free! I didn't worry one bit about taking out that car loan-it's already in the budget!

      To bring up the emoji keyboard:
      On a Mac: simultaneously Press Command + Control + Space
      On a windows: simultaneously ‘windows key’ + “.” (i.e. Full stop / period)

      Give it a search. That was how I got them in my budget, since it was created before emojis existed
