- Title: Using Directives in Experiential Psychology: The Dramatic Process of Change
Date: July 20, 2012
Presenter: Dr. Jeffrey Zeig
Description: Dr. Milton H. Erickson is rightfully known for his work with hypnosis, but much of his brief strategic therapy was effected through tasks-directives that set a context to elicit client-initiated change. Dr. Erickson gave these tasks as "homework assignments," with the approach tailored for each client.
In this lecture, Dr. Jeffrey Zeig will examine tasks as used in various schools of psychotherapy, with a special emphasis on the Ericksonian approach. Attendees will learn effective strategies for formulating, sequencing, and presenting tasks to create a dramatic process that empowers therapeutic engagement and elicits positive change.
Bio: Dr. Zeig is the founder and director of the Milton H. Erickson Foundation, having studied intermittently with Dr. Erickson for more than six years. He is the architect of the Evolution of Psychotherapy Conferences, widely regarded both as the world's largest and its most important conferences on psychotherapy. He also organizes the Brief Therapy Conferences, the Couples Conferences, and the International Congresses on Ericksonian Approaches to Hypnosis and Psychotherapy. The author, co-author, or editor of more than 20 books, Dr. Zeig maintains a private practice in Phoenix, Arizona and is a frequent and in-demand speaker at major universities and teaching hospitals around the world, including the Mayo Clinic, the Menninger Clinic, and MD Anderson.

This just never gets old for me. The explanations of these very abstract counselling concepts are detailed and rich.

Thank you Dr. Zeig for this wonderful video. I can relate to many things you said. I have watched the video and will review it once again to make sure I have an understanding of what you are saying. The language is easier to understand. I am not a Psychology major, but have taken psychology and sociology courses. I was a Social Work major at Wayne State University. I am considering returning to school. I haven't decided yet. I have been away from Wayne State University for about 3 years.
