Shibam, an ancient city in Yemen, is at risk of collapse from neglect and because of heavy rains and flooding that have hit the country in recent months. The Unesco World Heritage Site dates back to the 3rd century, and is known as the “Manhattan of the desert” because of high-rise buildings constructed in around the 16th century. But while Shibam has survived the ravages of time and a recent civil war, it is now falling apart as authorities struggle to secure enough funds to repair areas which have been damaged.

Soo true lol
Can someone help me understand “yemen oman” meme ?
@@UnwantedOpinion-ps6hw Look at how it's pronounced

I could cry...Yemen is a gem of a nation, natural and cultural wise and yet it breaks slowly and I can only watch. It's been my dream to visit Yemen since I was a child :(
@Justin Y. Let's say both 😄 I love both countries anyway and there is not much difference
@Justin Y. I have a Somali friend and he would not agree with your statement tbh

The city looks so amazing though..
nothing can be done...
@@campkira Indeed. Truly depressing..
Kind of interesting to know why they need tall buildings hundreds of years ago.
Last thing you want to be doing is walking more than 30 min to your destination within a town or city. At most 13 min would an acceptable amount. Plus it offers shade to the street level from the sun. These are some of my assumptions, probably related to laziness and climate. Human 101.

a stunning country ......big regret was not going before the civil war broke out...love you Yemen. Hope to see you someday
Beautiful place.
The world has failed you yemen, im sorry
I think you can't call them desert manhattan since it has existed before the actual manhattan!
LOL
It doesn't look real. But it does look amazing have skyscrapers so early on. Wonder what it was based on or was it independent thought

Wet dry world from mario 64
given the colours at first glance i tot it was a sandcastles of buildings lol 😂
same here I thought they were made out of sand
given the 16th century condition and location at that time, you thought they were made by the finest materials like today??? Yemen is not as rich as European countries to gave lots of their funding to maintaining that many buildings
This is my hometown
Where I married my beautiful wife ❤️
May Yemen be a better place and everyone there be safe with the current situation
Wow, the Yemenese built this in 16th-century? That's very impressive!
This is amazing. Looks almost like something from Aladin
Hey! It's my favorite netcitizen. How you doing?
isn't alladin based on middle east?. of course it looks the same.
Okay, guess I know where Cities Skylines get idea from...
M. Ak you have first victim.
Do people live there? 😱 Or is it just a ruin.
@محمد الجابري that's sad
No no people still live there
It's nice, so it is doomed. That is the way of our world. Where can you donate?
Manhattan is known as the Shibam of America
What’s this? Never knew there’s a city of buildings made of sand before. That one made on top of that vast stone is amazing. Too bad all of them are going to be eroded soon and turned back to sands.
What who lives by sand?
Did you know concrete was made using sand? And another building materials too
It is called sandstone.
it’s mud brick too. They have ALWAYS built their houses like that, even now
I seriously can’t be the only one that thought it was LEGO’s
#SaveYemen.
Hope it will survive
it will, if UN and NATO packed political nations never reach there. Tourists are fine but when western Jackals playing tourists and humanitarian reach there, that's when these buildings may actually fall.
Who wants scooooby snacks?
HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT TO YEMEN CITY, YOU RACIST
At least it is better than you
Shut up you hater

Yes, it’s now been confirmed!!!

Yemen is a beautiful place but sadly suffers under incompetent politicians and war.
Wow, it’s stunning!
I don't understand how that is possible since dirt is all around their city
yemen where is the arabic cultrue origin
not US not war
So sad, but this wonderful World Heritage Site is what the world’s cities, towns and villages will look like when - not if - civilization collapses worldwide.
Makes you think about today powers who thinks they gonna exist forever.

Looks like something you would see in a video game.
Hmm, a Mario video game...
Lots of parked cars but no people
desert is a hot place in case you don't know, everyone is inside the building.
RIP this city:(
Why hasn't this been covered more?? Thus is fascinating!
People love to paint their building brown? Or it is made of sand 😅
In times of peace, that would be a turism goldmine.
there should be more desert cities with buildings like that. like those timbuktu sahel buildings should look more like that
My name is yamaan and my name's meaning is yemen
While it's nice to preserve something like this, it'll likely take a lot of digging and irrigation to make sure runoff water is channeled to the river nearby, or a new flood channel. That's probably the best bet I can think of, aside from direct reconstruction.
ALL I CAN SAY IS WOOOOOOW
Like a sand castle
Amazing
Prettyyyy 😍
Muslim countries should come forward to preserve it if they feel it's not unislamic.
Problem is Yemen is in war.
There are people starving and they are quite in the main picture.
They look like their made out of cardboard
mud bricks
Sad ig become another ghost town
No there are still 9,000 people that live there.
Name this Oman now.

Shibam, Yemen. Manhattan of the desert, though it was made before Manhattan..
At least tens of billionaires and thousands of multimillionaires came from this land
how is that?
@@zachoo5135
Many Yemeni immigrants to Saudi Arabia became millionaires and came from here.
Mohammad b. Laden, father of Usama b. laden, came from this city.
He was the wealthiest commoner in Saudi Arabia, richer than Saudis themselves.
@@fisebilillah4406 Thank you for explaining.
Yeah,i would built a city in most vunerable place for sake of view..🤣🤣
I mean it was built in the 16 centuries so.. u never rlly know what was the purpose of being so high
@@reemalrayyashi6038 it wasn't for the "sake of view" the city was built near a place where water streams would be during rain seasons. And since its locted in a valley you should opt for a place where you won't effected by streams. Also the city had walls to protect it from any possible invasion/Raid and people just kept building till they had no space on the ground within the walls so they decided to go high. In terms of the style that's how it is in the most of the ancient cities in this part of Yemen. You can look for Wadi Dawan for example you would see a similar style of building.
Did they just say 16th century skyscrapers? How did they built those?
@saf dipo and yet they survived for hundreds of years..
@saf dipo he just amazed that it survived hundreds of years. It's not like he doesn't care and thinks that this is only a myth.
