- Can you use a 2014 Mac Mini in 2023? I PAID $200 for this Mac Mini! In this video I talk about how my experienc was using a 2014 Mac mini in 2023

I managed to pick up a 16 GB, i7 2014 Mac mini at a yard sale for $50 bucks. All it was missing was a bluetooth/wifi card. Went ahead and bought a SSD and replaced the hard drive while I was at it. It's a fantastic secondary computer! I have a M1 MacBook Pro 14 as my daily driver, but this little guy is really impressive, and a perfect little media machine. Runs Ventura fairly well with OpenCore. Great video!
That’s great to hear! Awesome yard sale find!! They are some powerful machines
How well does it run?
I was using a 2014 i5 Mac mini up until the other day. Finally upgraded to the 2018, just because the 2018 will update past Monterey, and the 2018 has a 6-core processor with 16gb ram
That’s a great upgrade! I bet you saved a ton of money.. How you liking it so far?
I literally paid $100 each for two late 2014 mac minis on ebay last year. They each came with an installed SSD. They are fantastico. Only run up to Monterrey, but other than that no issues.
That’s freaking awesome!!! It’s very cool to hear how they can still be used in day to day stuff
Monterrey is fantastic. I like the layout of the settings better. I swear my experience got choppier with Ventura
Moving to Sonoma was a mistake. Worst version of macOS yet.
Yesterday I bought a 2014 Mac Mini i5 2.6 Ghz, 8GB RAM, 512 SSD for $100
That is epic!!! Great find!!
@@TheAppleHelpline THAT'S not all, I just bought a BlackMagic Pro 580 eGPU for $210, Works incredible with the official Thunderbolt 2 adapter.
I just bought one, your comment made the decision. I’ve never had a Mac before so I wanted a cheap one.
Was that Mac mini good for every day tasks as am thinking of buying the same mac
@@lukecrocker5134 if you're not looking to play modern games it's good. I even got sent the wrong one by mistake which had the 1.4ghz processor and even that computer is good enough to emulate most gamecube games. The 2.6 is much faster and nice. For a hundred bucks i recommend
You're spot on for buying the right tool for the job - I've wasted so much money on devices I used to only a small percent of their capability in the past. Had to fight with myself to go M2 and not M2 Pro - but I just don't need that delicious power. Good sensible, reasonable video, thanks!
LOL.. I know how you feel about eating money…
What spec did you end of going with on the M2?
@@TheAppleHelpline decided to go for M2, 16GB unified memory, 1TB storage (based on currently using 490GB, with about 30-70% growth expected over 3 years) and 10GbE
My old Asus laptop just died and until I get it fixed I decided to get a 2014 Mac Mini with a 2.6GHz i5, 8GB and 256GB SSD.
Came with bluetooth Apple keyboard and mouse. Works great for web dev - definitely worth the $200 that I paid for the whole package.
Still getting used to the weird shortcuts, since it's the first time I'm using a Mac.
Very good video. Picked up a 2014 Mac Mini a few months ago from a garage sale. Took it home and it is 16GB with 1TB SSD so it was extremely fast. It is just a machine for me to play around with Mac OSX and even install an older version of XCode to learn how to program apps so it is more than enough.
are you programming well on that device? Xcode versions still work?
@@margaridapeixoto2078 Right now I only have Monterey on it and it works fine for XCode 11. Runs well and could follow along the tutorials.
If I want to running more newer versions of XCode then I would either have to use OCLP to work on the newer XCode. Or just use my newer Macbook Pro.
After watching the video and checking many forums and other materials on UA-cam, I must admit that this one is very good, although I only use Mac for basic things, I bought exactly the same version in a Polish store and I am more than satisfied. I already have a Mac Book Air 2020 Intel 7 and 16 GB RAM and I must say that I do not feel any significant loss in the performance of this old guy. Very well made material and I wholeheartedly recommend this platform from 2014 as the first computer with Mac OS
I have one and the only reason I will purchase another one is it cannot run more recent versions of MacOS. Will be recycled as a Linux machine, perhaps will replace the hybrid disk by an SSD and will work many years still for sure. It is a great machine
I’ve never used Linux. Sounds like this machine will be perfect for it
I use a 2011 mac mini (early model) 1 HDMI, 1 Thunderbolt/MDPort. I use it for music only. Does a great job still :) Maxed out the ram as well.
That is awesome it’s still working well for you..
What DAW do you use?
I am using a 2012 Mac Mini with 8 gig of ram, plus 250 gig SSD hard drive. It works just fine for me and I can upgrade the ram if I want to also. I paid $250.00 for it here in Canada, it just needs a better monitor. Prices here in Canada are much higher, The M2 is about $800.00 here. Its running Catalina, wish it could run a o/s that is newer.
Glad to see a 2012 is still running well for you. Yeah the 2014 didn’t get support for the latest OS.
Hell yeah! I love the 2012 Mac Mini, got a few of them running Batocera, playing all retro games from NES to PS2.
Last week I bought here in Germany a refurbished Mac mini 2014 with Intel I7 , 16 GB RAM and 2000 GB Fusion Drive for 360 Euro include taxes . Apple Mac mini (2014) [Intel Core i7 3,0GHz, 16GB RAM, 2TB Fusion Drive, Intel Iris Graphics 5100. For further 150 euro I ordered a 5 TB hard disc. Thank you for your video.
Hey there, great to meet you! Ty for taking the time for the topic of this video. I find myself in a very unique situation. Its quite lengthy if you have the time.
Been using the exact same Mac mini 2014 with the same spec and even with the same LG monitor for the last few years! Just upgraded to a 2021 M1 14in MacBook Pro. Still plan to use the Mac mini as a secondary computer though 😊
I bet the MacBook feels like a sports car.. lol.. glad the old Mac is still working
Bought 2012 Mac Mini fully loaded with latest OS, for my music production.
Enjoying it so far. It does get crazy not but am happy
That's good to hear!! Awesome!
what DAW and plugins are you using? I got one of these to try it out for music production. I have a windows PC and it crashes 10 times a day. I've adjusted the setting etc and I think it comes down to the interface and the mother board don't get along. I have a mixer and use it as an interface with no issues. But I don't like PC and I don't like Windows so I am going to try this little guy and if it works I'm going to squeeze all the life I can from her and then upgrade. Think of this as training wheels!

I still use this 2014 Mac mini to this day.
UA-cam, zoom, daily tasks its perfect. Ive gotten into streaming and thats where she struggles a bit but just barely gets by. Im only considering upgrading now because i need to stream remotely so ill need a laptop I can do it from and deliver better quality on a regular basis
That’s cool to hear the machine can still do live streaming… I’m impressed
I’m thinking of running The Sims on a 2014, do you reckon it can handle it?
Just bought the same one too. Top spec. Im surprised it handles daily tasks well in 2023. Thought that opening tabs and other things will slow it down. It didnt! Will upgrade to 1 tb ssd in the future. Still running the 1tb fusion drive
Oh wow.. that is awesome to hear.. enjoy it!
I recently replaced an 11th Gen 8 core Intel PC with a mac mini 2014 running Ventura. The old mac mini is only used for multimedia and the internet. It runs great for my simple usage. It's the best thing I’ve purchased in years.
They are beasts... I even looked at the 2018 Mac Mini and laugh when i see them still going for 1,000-1,500 for the top specs.. It makes be wonder if it could still get even close to the M1 or M2..
I'm using a 2018 Mac mini, i7 with 32GB RAM. About 1 month into owning it, I spent more on an eGPU (Razer Core X with AMD 5600 XT) because of fan noise every time I joined a Zoom or Teams video call, plus it enabled gaming - I'm still a StarCraft2 fan, as well as using Bootcamp for some Steam gaming - was very happy when Bootcamp gladly recognised the eGPU solution. Using 10GbE as I run VMs from a NAS volume (SSD in RAID10, so I have full advantage of 1GB/sec throughput) and store footage on the NAS. 10GbE enables me to edit directly on NAS. I've been trialling a standard spec M2 Mac mini (8GB, 1GbE) this week, and using a USB-C 2.5GbE ethernet is OK but does impact video timeline and the 4x copy times are noticeable, plus chews up a 50% of the ports unless I use dongles or hubs... I think I'm going to return it in favour of a slightly higher-spec M2 with 16GB and 10GbE. What has sold me on switching are a handful of apps I can't run on Intel (App Store iOS / iPadOS apps) and the fact that the power consumption is about 6-10x lower at under 10W, and that an iMovie export of a 6minute 2.7K drone clip took 1.5 minutes on the M2 but 6.3 minutes on the i7. That kind of efficiency has me sold immediately.
EDIT: forgot to mention that the Intel's fan spins up very often (despite regular cleaning) - things like OneDrive sync or Time Machine backups cause max fan noise. The M2 has been dead silent despite StarCraft2, OneDrive, Teams calls, etc. all thrown at it todau
That’s cool.. I think I saw after the 2018 came out people trying eGPU’s and the results were really good. You really used that machine to its potential. Yeah that M2 with only 8GB really shows it’s weakness when you try to actually do anything intense. Also that lacking of ports is a pain in the ass and can be expensive to add a Thunderbolt hub, external drives etc… I figured editing on it would be hard to do when doing anything extensive. Also, that fan did kick up when I was doing other things…lol.. I’m working on another kind of video for this Mac Mini that will be interesting… thanks for taking the time to share what you have.. it’s really cool to see
@@TheAppleHelpline appreciate the response! I’m not a creative, I dabble in glueing drone footage together into iMovie exports… but also work with VMs and storage a lot, testing out various things. I’d be more than happy to help out on ideas if you ever wanted a sounding board. I’d love to be the tech guy’s tech guy 😂
Great video! I have a 2018 MacBook Pro as my daily driver but wanted something permanent in my man cave, hooked up to a 42” 4K tv, I bought a late 2014 i7, 16gb Mac mini with a 2TB Fusion Drive. It was £200 delivered, very happy with it!
picked up a mac mini 2014 i5 8gb of ram, a magic mouse, magic keyboard and (drum roll) 27" mac thunderbolt display all for $100 bucks on facebook market place. They guy said it was sitting in his basement for a few years and had no use for it. Think I scored ! Thanks for the video, I just do general computing these days...
That is a sweet deal… I hope the machine does what you need!
I’m thinking of getting one for 100$ too today haha would u recommend it?
I don’t even need to use the apps on it I just need to open up some charts on one app for trading
You think I should be good?
you scored!
Macmini 2012 i7 2.6 with 2x1TB ssd and 16g of ram, use Logic pro, audition and maxmsp (lots of audio intesive work) and all the adobe app (Photoshop, illustrator, indesign and premiere, I'm a graphic designer and musician). I works really nicelly and quiet for professional work (perhaps premiere is the slowest)
Dang…. Going even older!! I’m glad it’s working well for you!!
I have 3 of these all i5, one I upgraded with a 1TB SSD, one used as media server and one for photos and video processing. Never used anything faster, so I'm perfectly happy with them.
That’s awesome!!! I still use mine occasionally for general tasks..
Hi. You might be able to point me in the right direction. I want to use my 1TB Fusion for video editing with hardware that isn't going to play nice with the new 2023 I just purchased ... I just discovered this little chink in going to the new silicone system. So, how do I continue to be able to use the 2014 if I do a migrate assist to the new one? I just want to use iMovie and continue Monterey on the 2014 basically. Can I literally just disconnect and reconnect the monitor when needed to work on the MM2014? Making sure I leave the Monterey on it and reinstall iMovie. Suggestions?
Question, did you upgrade the HDD to an SSD by swapping out the drive already in it with a SATA SSD or did you add an NVME SSD with adapter and put macOS on it? I’m thinking about picking one up and installing an NVME and I don’t know if I also want to go through the whole disassembly process just to replace the hard drive already in it too.
@@Skribzz_ Additional SSD and put the OS on it. The existing hard drive is now just storage.
Okay i got my mac mini 2014 8 gig 256 I5 processor ,in today Monterey still works great have connected to my 50 inc tv. It's more than fast enough for what I needed to do. And I only dropped 130 on it. And came with a one year warranty for free.
That is freaking awesome!!! Enjoy!!
I just purchased a 2010 Mac mini because I want a optical drive to make a classic game machine and just installed high sierra on it.
I was also surprised to see the 2018 space grey Mac minis still go for so much money 😮
Wow.. a 2010…. That’s cool… I look at the 2018’s too and wonder if they would still need worth that price today… I just can’t see that it would be..
Me and my mom just bought one at a pawnshop for $20, just the mac mini itself. No mouse and keyboard. It the I5 model and I'm glad to hear I can upgrade it myself.
Just grabbed a 2014 Mac Mini (i5 and 4GB ram) for $100 and plan on using it as a Plex Media Server connected to my Buffalo NAS. Hopefully it has enough power to handle this. Thank You for this video .
I would love to know how this works for you. I would be a little concerned with the 4GB of ram
Right now I am using a my old mac mini from 2014 for school usage and able to installed the lastest mac os onto the device using the Sonoma os on a unsupported mac so far it running really good and no issue what so ever.
That's really cool to hear. Many people think they can't get the lastest OS, but with a little hacking it is pretty easy and yes it works well..
I know this is an older video, but it's worth mentioning that the 2018 Mac mini didn't have upgradable storage. It was the first one to offer soldered BGA chips.
It basically comes down to the 2014 with upgradable storage (2.5" and optional M.2 with adapter for dual drives) and 16GB DDR3 RAM max, or the 2018 with soldered storage (upgradable if you have a decent rework station and you're skilled enough to replace BGA chips) and a max of 64GB DDR4 RAM.
I personally just bought a 2014 with the i7 and 16GB RAM for $120 CAD off eBay to use as a Plex server, so these prices came WAY down since this video was posted, obviously lol. SSD storage also came way down, you can get a 4TB SSD for like $300 CAD now, I spent $420 (nice) on this 4TB i7 16GB RAM 2014 Mac mini Plex Server and couldn't be happier.
I had some issues with OpenCore at first but eventually got it all sorted out.
I purchased 11 years ago and am still using a 2012 Mac Mini and added a 1TB SSD hard drive 4 years ago. I use it daily although it is limited to Catalina. My only challenges have been hardware problems with Mac mouse and keyboard taking an age to establish and hold Bluetooth connectivity. However the trackpad connectivity is sound. At some point I may just confine this Mac to music, photos and UA-cam usage
Great advice! Using an older machine is honestly the way to go. I’m still on a 2019 15 inch MacBook Pro with an i9. It works great for everything I need, but the battery is getting pretty rough on it (its recommending a service on it now). I’d like to upgrade to a 16 inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro but still waiting on those prices to fall a bit more. I want that ProMotion screen and the Mini LED!
That sucks that the battery is failing.. I would ask Apple if that replacement would be covered? You never know.
I don’t know how much the M1’s will drop.. they are still such good machines..
@@TheAppleHelpline I have and they said it’s $800 to replace the battery 😬 the laptop is barely worth that now lol. Yeah but they’re getting closer to my price range. I’ve thought about getting a 14 inch because they’re cheaper but I love that big display. I’m torn haha
I just got a 2011 mac mini and I'm glad to know everyone has positive experiences with their computers being 10+ years old, will be my secondary pc for music production (I already have a windows pc with an i5 and a 3060 for 3D stuff and gaming)
The 2014 mini is a great machine for basic home or office work, but not so much for graphics or video editing. FWIW I bought a 2014 Mac mini (Core i5, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD) for a family member as a replacement for an older 2012 mini. The 2014 more than fits their computing needs, feels pretty fast with that internal SSD and was relatively economical to purchase. One caveat is that the 2014 mini is limited to running macOS 12 Monterey, so if you need to use software that has higher system requirements you may not be able to use this model.
I got a 2012 I believe. MacOS ran really slow on it but running Linux Mint on it is beautiful! I'm about to get the 2014 to do the same.
Oh nice. I’ve never used Linux before. I should check it out
We still have two original owner Mac Minis: a 2012 and a 2014. Still rocking the HDD as well. I just picked up a 2018 Mac Mini as well.
Was looking at one of these and found your channel. Great video, subscribed.
Your style and personality are awesome. I love your videos.
Thanks man!!! I really appreciate that!
I have an i7 2014 that I use for downloading torrents. I don't do much else with it except verify the quality of the torrents and search for the torrnets, verifying after they've arrived. The video quality is quite good when focused on a single file and if I want to, I can pull it up on my screen and browse websites with full motion video, no trouble at all. It's a good little workhorse.
nice! i think about buy a this machine only for web development, the price is a great reason for considerate, thanks for the info bro
Good luckl!! Can you let me know how it works? many people ask if it is good enough for web development
I'm still using my Late 2012 Mac mini. It has the 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7. It has 16 GB of Memory. Wishing I could up the Memory. But other than that, it still works great.
I have a 2012 Mac Mini and in about an hour Ill have a 2018 Mac Mini with 6 cores + 256GB SSD + 8GB's of RAM. The RAM is upgradable but its a bit more work to do it yourself on the latter one.
I’m using my 2014 mac mini specifically for Apple Music. I use an audiophile grade cable that helps my computer sound better. Plus, my computer runs uber fast!
Typing this from my 2014 macbook air with a dual core i5 and 4gb of ram. This machine is my in bed and throw in the bag for school machine I use for basic tasks like web browsing or watching this video. It's slow and when you open more then a couple things it lags hard due to the 4gb ram, but it's still more then usable, and a good exercise of patience.
It's actually not bad and I'm dual booting macOS Sonoma with opencore and Windows 11.
My main system is a 2021 16 in m1 max macbook pro, but I got tired of lugging that expensive big machine around, so this macbook air works perfectly for that.
That's cool!! Always good to see the older MacBook still alive and kicking.
I may be late in commenting but HDMI would not be able to improve resolution. You need to go with a direct Thunderbolt 2 to Displayport cable. No adapter as an adapter would degrade quality.
Ah ok.. I may have to try that.. thanks for the info!!
In 2024 I’m still using my mac mini wit the i7 processor and I only use it for pro tools and it’s perfectly fine. Never crashed or anything. Just need to keep the OS updated cuz my OS was from 2018 and had to update it eventually
Excellent video. I'm currently using a 2014 i5 mac mini, quite similar to the one you reviewed, and it goes quite smoothly, and I'm also using a 34" ultra wide monitor, for other work purposes and other computer. The only problem I've had so far is some video driver issues (videos turn green sometimes) and Apple TV app won't play actual content, only ads. I use this mac mini as an always-on home server and the only reason I'm considering to upgrade to an apple silicon is power consumption.
That sounds like a reason to upgrade.. lol.. you could probably find a killer deal on a Mac Mini M1
Just picked one up for 70 bucks free shipping. Bought it for testing Linux distributions.
Thank you, is it good for studying? Just Zoom classes, pdf viewer, Telegram and browser
If it can performe 35 tabs in Chroome, Photoshop and play youtube it will be able to do this kind of tasks.
Hello and congrats for the great review! Quick question: I have found an Apple "Mac mini 2.6 GHz- Intel Core i5- 8 GB RAM- 1 TB HDD, Version: Late 2014" Price 130 EURO. I want it mostly to play emulator games with my kids and garageband. Is it a good purchase? Please let me know!!
I would look for an i7 with more memory to help run those games. Also, make sure the emulator will run on Mac OS
@@TheAppleHelpline Thanks for the reply. I bought it few days ago.
Is it capable for software development?
And a used mac mini good or bad?
Please let me know...
I don't do any software development so I honestly couldn't say for sure
The resolution drives, looks horrible when connecting to hdmi. What thunderbolt adapter would work with hdmi that can provide the highest resolution? Great video
I tried a number of different adaptors and it just wouldn’t convert..
I’ll have to keep trying.
I wasn’t really disappointed in the resolution…
I’m still using my 2014 Mac mini also my 2014 MacBook Pro obviously I upgraded them both MacBook Pro has new battery and aura pro x2 I plan on buying a Mac mini 2018 soon
I just bought a Mac mini 2014 with the same specs, I am excited to setup my plex server
What do you think about this computer for running Logic. I do simple recording sessions with one or two instruments. I feel like this should work.
It might be a little slower.. But hey... It's even less expensive now then when I did this video
I keep 3 old polycarbonate macbooks on my boat for record keeping( pages and numbers )and SatNav ( OpenCPN +Mapset ), salt water boat life is hard on electronics, salt air kills them, would rather it killed a macbook that cost me 50-70 than a Macbook that cost me 1000+. In the event that the boats entire electronics go out, using an iphone and GPS2IP with the macbooks gives me Satelite Navigation with maps anywhere in the world and does so when nothing else in the boat is working.
I am student and will need to have a few excel books, word, Spotify and 20 chrome tabs opened at the same time. Will a similarly spaced older Mac mini be enough? Thanks for the video!
For sure it will..
I am currently watching this video on the same 2014 i7 Mac Mini, only it is running Chrome OS Flex:
installing software is as simple as right clicking and selecting "install via Linux",
I have 'nala' installed on the terminal for easy updates,
VS Code, Java JDK, Scala 3, PowerShell, nano . . .
If not for Chrome OS Flex I would have surely just tossed this machine, on account of its older OS (which doesn't even allow you to install Xcode! . . .
you can however use Replit, if you want to pay a small monthly fee).
Was it worth $168? Sure.
You just gained a new subscriber. Love the pacing and info packed content .
Sweet!!! Thank you very much!!
I have the late 2014 Mac Mini. I plan to upgrade the RAM and CPU in Shenzhen, China. it works so smooth when editing 1080p video but now I'm editing in 4K and it struggles. i think the upgrade will help me use it for another few more years.
I'm watching this video on my 2011 Mac Mini Server (2.0 Ghz, quad core i7). It has two hard drives so I replaced one 512gb hard drive with a 2.5-inch, 500gb ssd and kept the second 512gb hard for a time machine backup. I found a 27-inch Thunderbolt display that connects via thunderbolt. Finally, I use Open Court Legacy Patcher to update to OS Sonoma. The only problem I have with this system is I can't watch media on Apple TV and the gpu is rated at 512mb. But, it's a great machine for my office.
What Thunderbolt Display are you using? Is it tb4 or older? I’m trying to figure out how to connect my Mac mini 2011 to new Apple studio display (tb4), if it’s even possible.
Still using a Late 2014 2.6 i5 16gb RAM and a 500gb SSD as a glorified printer server. Starting to get pretty laggy but I don't use it for anything else, so it does its job. Kind of stuck trying to figure out a "real" job for it to do....
I bought one in 2016 and still use it. I put a M2 disk in it and it works fine....
That's awesome!!
Well,I had to put a faster disk in it,the greedy people at Apple put a 5400 rpm disk with 8 mb cache in it,it slowed it all down to a crawl, its really chaep to put such a disk in the computer....
What could be the lowest cost device that is still usable for developing some iOS apps or basic programming in your opinion?
Why not? My 2012 Mac Mini has been running 24/7 since then and is used every day...
That is awesome to hear!!!!
You cannot upgrade ram memory on a 2014 model. Just on 2014 you just cannot just by swapping, you need to resolder ram chips in order to upgrade.
Hi. This is a great video. After watching this, I went ahead and bought a MAC Mini 2014. This is running OS X, post factory reset by the seller. The problem I have is that I am not able to load App store, it keeps showing "Cannot Connect to the App Store" and because of this I am not able to upgrade. I have tried all the possible solutions, took help from Apple support, and installed the OS again, but nothing worked. Any help to get this resolved will be highly appreciated.
My 2014 Mac Mini is still going after upgrading to an SSD Because the original drive died but lasted me 10+ years
You have some decent points in your video... But I think you get a bit lost in your own arguments at times. I also would fact check some of your information, not all your technical points are entirely correct.
Further more. You didn't really answer the question... What's the software support like? Can it run the latest macos and software? And to that end, even on currently installed software, do all features work or has stuff been cut out due to age/ hardware support?
I always get lost.... It's the story of my life... LOL... What specs were incorrect?
I assumed most people knew a 2014 Mac Mini no longer had OS support. There are some way smarter people then me have some cool software that lets you upgrade to the latest but the experience my not be as good as it should be. I need to test it. I didn't see any functions I currently use missing from the software I use. But I can't speak for anything else.
The question is not if we can, but for how long can we use a machine that is 9 years old.
As long as it works for you!! It depends on what you use it for
I use a Mac mini from 2014 and its so fast because I installed FydeOS on it now I have a Mac mini who Runs linux and Android Apps, every App I want to Open its Open directly With out any waiting time or studering
Its Not the Hardware that is Bad, its the Software and Mac OS Runs horroble on this mac
Just picked up a 2014 mac mini with the i7 3.0ghz 16g ram 256ssbb for 160 bucks hope its enough to get me by with light computer work until i get another job going. The ebay listing has free returns so if not Ill just send it back and buy a new one. If the old one does everything I need I will use that until it completely gives up😂 fingers crossed 😬😬😬
This is what you need to do 4k 60hz: Club 3D Mini Display Port 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 UHD (CAC-1170)
I've had Mac minis since 2012, they were my go to Apple device until just recently. My favorite of the Intel minis was the 2018. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB (unfortunately the storage isn't upgradeable) and ran Boot Camp with Windows. I have to say I miss that the most since I moved to the M series Macs. Regarding displayport, I don't recall you mentioning the resolution of your wide screen monitor but if it's 1080p you won't see any improvement using an HDMI adapter with that 2012 mini.
Yeah the soldered RAM is a bummer with the M machines... But I get why they did it.. The wide screen display I use it like a 2.4K. 3440x1440... I enjoy the extra room and only having 1 monitor. Via HDMI the 2014 will do 4K...
@@TheAppleHelpline Nice sounding monitor. A while ago I purchased the ASUS ProArt 27, a 2K monitor. I really enjoy it.
Apple has stopped supporting updates for my mac mini, and I still want to keep using it. Is there a way to do this? Some applications have already notified me that they've discontinued support and I will no longer be able to use those applications with my system going forward.
There are ways to get the newest OS on your machine.. I am not sure how the software would work though… since it’s based on memory and the CPU specs…. It’s worth a try.. do a search for ways to get the latest on your machine on YT
im still using a 2014 Mac mini is has a 2.6 ghz i5 and 8gb of ram with a 1tb hdd (planning on upgrading to a m.2 ssd) but other then that the machine is perfect for my daily tasks
2014 i5 mac mini upgraded to 4 tb still kickin running a plex server and playing wotb one owner me.
That’s awesome!! I’m glad you’re still using it on the daily!
Good day! Does Macmini 2014 8gb of RAM 2.4GHZ 1TB HDD is good for WFH basis such as Multiple tabs and using of zoom meeting? Does it have any buffering or lags if I use it simultaneously?
You might see it occasionally if you push it.. as you saw I had a ton of tabs open plus videos playing and photoshop..it handled it pretty well.. what’s your budget?
Get a active mini display port to hdmi adapter it'll work in the thunderbolt ports
I have a Macmini 2010 2.4intel core 2 Duo- quit 8 gb/ram, what’s your best out of it,
¿is it worth to upgrade or not?
Thanks!
What do you use the machine for?
I have the thunderbolts to hdmi adapter and it doesn’t do anything better than the standard port :-/
Is this machine any good for music production?
Depends on how much we're talking.. The software you use might have issues running if there isn't enough RAM
I have 2 Belkin Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI adapters they work perfect I used to use them with my 2015 MacBook Pro and yeah there great you can also adapt thunderbolt 2 to usb c off its gonna be not as fast as usb 4 thunderbolt 4 but still nice
Yeah for sure… if it works and it doesn’t get in the way it’s great
Great video with a great message! Realistically 99% of the people who buy a "base" Mac will never push beyond its capabilities. And unless they earn income editing multiple videos daily a "base" Mac will meet the needs of 99% of people. Sure twice a year they'll edit birthday videos for their kids on iMovie and maybe see a beachball for 5-seconds, but who cares? Far better they spend the $400 upgrade cost on fast external storage plus a local backup drive, and expanded cloud storage for off-site backups.
Thank you so much.. It's just like the phones too... Most of us really don't need to upgrade but every so many years. While it's nice to have something new if you are stretching your budget or should be saving getting something older or holding on to what you have isn't a bad choice either.
I have a question, I want to do basic coding and digital design, would an older model be capable for this ??
From what I have heard it should be good. I don’t code so I don’t have first hand experience.
Quetion!!! I have that exact model, but I need to downgrade the os from el capitan to mavericks or lower… Can you tell me how??
I'lll be honest The best way to learn is search on YT... I'm sure you'll find something way more helpful than me. Try this ua-cam.com/video/Anez2CnprIk/v-deo.html
It can be messy- do you have a Time Machine backup from a point in time when the Mac had a previous OS loaded?
You’d lose recent files but get the old OS installed.
I am planning to use my Mac Mini Mid 2007 (with upgraded CPU and RAM) to control my 3D Printer with Linux+OctoPrint ?
Oh cool!!!! Let me know how that goes and if you are happy with the results
In bangladesh mac mini 2014 i7 16/512 cost 40000 taka which means 400 dollers
Hey! I'm planning on buying one of these since I need an Apple device to publish apps on the app store. Do you think that the machines power will be sufficient for basic web development stuff?
I haven’t done web development before so I am not much help… sorry
I have the mac mini late 2014 upgraded/configured to core i7 and 16gb ram with 3ghz and 1.11tb. Also does the mac mini 2014 come with macOs updates cause its a pretty old machine so im not sure.
They do not… However, there are communities that help to easily get around that and get the latest. The general consensus is it works well with it
I bought one of these for music production. Pro Tools is a RAM hog and 16 GB is bare minimum but if I can upgrade I will. Right now I have an i5 with 32 GB RAM and it does OK but it crashes so much. I made most of my money in music from Apple so I feel as a partner of theirs I should run their products! :)
I got the i7 3.0mHz version with 16GB RAM and a 512SSD for $200. I figure I can try my hand on this machine get everything figured out then upgrade to a big boy and use this as backup or lend it to my daughters or sons if they want to record.
The video is great and I read all the comments (302 of them) to see what else I can learn! Does anyone know what keyboard and mouse is popular for a MAC Mini?
**Update** The Mac mini is really fast and smooth and works great!

So heres a novice-guy question: I want to buy an older Apple Mini computer solely to hook up to my projector to go online to check email, type letters and do non video work on a big screen...nothing else. This would work? My projector is a Vivitek with HDMI port.
For sure this would works.. depending on your budget check out the top spec 2014’s like I have for the best experience
i want a mac mini for garageband. I have a very old 4th gen ipad im using to record now. if I get the 2014 model, how long until it becomes too old to not be able to use apps again? Also can i get the newest version of garageband on the 2014 model? thanks man
That is a tough question.. the OS determines what gets updates.. for the 2014 Mini’s I think it stopped with Monterey. There are hacks that can let you put any Mac OS on.. but the experience might not be the best depending on what you need it for
Can I use Mac mini as home setup and access it remotely using my older MacBook ?
I just bought the 2014 Mac mini i7 3.0 GHz , 16gb ram and 256gb SSD, but having problems getting it to work with LG ultrawide hdr monitor. Is there a certain cable I need to purchase
Is it worth buying the i5/8GB ram/1TB version for $107?
I would like to buy it to try macOS, but I don't want to spend a lot of money
I'm watching it on IBM desktop from 90s ))
I bought an old iMac mid 2007 for $20 and would love to know what I could do to upgrade it!!! Please help thank you
You can easily upgrade the memory from the back I believe. If you are handy you can also remove the display and upgrade the storage to an SSD
I have had the late 2014 since then. It barely runs now. I have had to restore settings and stay at an older update to use it. BUT, now it wont let me sync with my iPhone 11 or let me send pics or video without updating to Monterey. So, I did. It's barely running again, but it is running..lol I am thinking of getting the new mac mini m2 $599. for 9 years of use, the original $699 I paid seems to have been worth it. What's your thoughts for someone needs fast operation for design software?
It will seem blazing fast.. lol.. just make sure you have enough memory.. it’s annoying Apple starts with only 8GB.. it should be good but I would be concerned about 4-5 years down the road.. also, the base storage is slower than normal because Apple is cheap.. Again.. it should be fine.. but when external memory is faster it’s kinda annoying..
@@TheAppleHelpline I guess I would.get the 16GB but yeah the memory is an issue with the design stuff. My husband built me an amazing PC that can handle everything but it’s really hard for me because I use an iPhone and an iPad pro and can’t figure out how to get videos to the PC. I just want everything to be a mac cuz I'm too lazy to figure out the PC. I guess I need lessons.
@@TheAppleHelpline why is it $100 on Amazon? I have the M2pro in my cart and it's $1199 but $1299 at the Apple store.
Im planning to buy mac mini 2014 i5 16GB/1TB, is it still realiable for running photoshop, final cut pro x in 2024? Please answer
I decided to buy a Mac mini Late 2014 I5 processor with 8gb ram. Is still worth it?
What are you going to use it for?
Great advice!! Thanks!! Trying to mutli-task (mostly chrome) on my old HP is tanking, even after a massive memory expansion. I just bought a mac mini from Omaha Blue! Going to give it a try :) Haven't used a mac since the first imac G3 bubble computers came out. lol
Oh wow!!! I’m glad I could help.. which year did you end up getting? Specs?
