  • So it's day three of the rewire and we are trying to rectify the wiring in the loft when we make some horrific discovery with the existing installation.

The NICEIC advise is exactly what I was thinking, it's the only practical way of moving forward and then if it still fails fine you're looking at work that has to be done but if you're fitting the suitable light fittings then yeah always cut back first. Slack used to always be a "just in case something happens" way of thinking but people were thinking if the fitting had an issue, they forgot about all the slack over the top of the fitting causing an issue.
A painful job for sure but it's looking like great work and I'm sure the customer is happy you're being so thorough and cautious with their safety.

Some of the trouble with the old downlighters apart from the dodgy connections is that when the customer changes the bulbs they don't tuck the cable to the sides leaving the cables on top of bulbs,to me the best you can do is to cut out the burnt out cable and if you still have enough left reconnect and test, would of helped with the insulation the original electrician should of used 1.5mm t@e 👍

I see electricians flapping about insulation with 1mm yet as the NIC guy said, worse case scenario is to de-rate it to 8amp, and a quick cable calc would confirm that as well.
That damage was caused by standard GU10 lamps not LEDs.
All I do when I am using existing cables, is put it down as a limitation then your covered.

Looks like a grim one pal. I’m in a cabin holiday for the next 3 days. Looking forward to not messing around with cables for a while

Very informative video as usual but that property has some desperately low ceilings. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

Good work. Great fix on those downlights. What was the cost of this rewire?

That was the problem with gu10 halogen lamps they a death trap personally I have never changed one where there has been no heat damage If the cable exceeded 70 degrees then should be replaced so you did the right thing cutting damaged bit out and fitting led As a sparky you already new that and didn't need to involve the nic your own sparks should have gave you the backup you needed On seeing previous vids you wouldn't have left anything dangerious Good video as usual

12 V ones weren't any better. My dad's been replacing choc blocks and shortening cables in his 12 V system since 1987. Once there was even a short from a cable to the metal framework for the suspended ceiling. No fuses on the secondary of the 500 VA transformers so the other lights were flickering merrily as the short dragged down the voltage close to zero.
My worst find was a ceiling light with built-in transformer and three 20 W G-something halogens, connected to 1914 VIR singles in a plaster & lath ceiling without conduit. The heat from the halogens had burned both the fitting itself and - worst of all - the rubber insulation on the ancient wires! I removed the light, disposed of it and rewired the lighting in the whole room. There were other gems too, like a light switch that had been moved, extending the wires in the wall with some choc blocks plastered over, or a run of flexi conduit that the skirtings had been screwed into. I think I removed a total of around six rawlplugs and screws from that run. That was one of those EICRs that end up in a at least half a rewire. I knew the place even before I started and expected a bit of trouble but as things go, it was even worse than I'd expected.

Thanks for the video, excuse ignorance but why did they set on fire?
    Was it just poor connections?

It’s a combination of the way the insulation has been installed so it doesn’t allow for the heat to dissipate from halogen lights and I would say too much slack so the cables are in direct contact with the light fittings 👍

I don’t know why your so worried about the cable being derated?
