Alex thanks for sharing. You are a great guy and you have done far more than you could imagine. You have taught me more than I was taught in most of my degree courses in environmental science.
Thank you, it was very helpful. I wonder why you don't just use a second monitor for your reference, instead of pausing. You can even use a tablet. Tell me, how do you draw such straight and precise lines, for example the buildings? I know there are straight line tools but spacing them and sizing them perfectly is not easy to do on the fly, and I don't think drawing a freehand line would result in such straight lines.
Good question! I have never thought of having the reference on a second screen because I use only one screen but it is a great idea! The straight lines are done using SHIFT in Photoshop.
Thanks a lot for your video, very informative! As I do not have a drawing pad. Can I illustrate them on Procreate for the images? But what I m stuck is after that how can I animate them?
I have never used Procreate so I can't say for sure but if you can find an app to record your screen as you draw, you can certainly throw the recording into any movie editing software, accelerate it and turn that into a video.
Hi Alex! I love this tutorial, I have been making a whiteboard drawing using your method. One thing I can not figure out is, how to write text without a text box appearing. Please help me out.
Hi, I'm glad this is helpful. Thanks for your message! I do the texts either in Photoshop with the text layer behind a white mask layer and I erase the mask with the eraser tool or in FCP X during editing with a "typewriter" text. Is the text box showing in Photoshop?
Salut, Alex! Merci! I appreciated your tips in this video very much. I'm struggling to keep my animations interesting on the screen. Sometimes I feel like I have nothing to draw while the narration is happening. How have you improved your creativity when you struggle to keep things moving? 🎨📝👨🎨
Glad it was helpful! Several ideas: try to use as many metaphors and examples in the script so you have interesting and fun things to illustrate, try to think about other things you would like people to understand (don't be too literal), watch other videos such as the RSA animate one to get more ideas, use texts to reinforce concepts.
You might be able to do it with a phone and/or a tablet as long as you can draw (with your finger or stylus) and record it. But I don't use these devices so I couldn't tell you.
Thanks for a reply... I also saw the video, where they were shooting real time draw ing with the hand... and it was really cool... what do you think about that? Is it for advanced only?
@@nadezhdaershova9776 Yes, you can definitely do that. Two caveats: 1) you need to feel very confident with your drawing and 2) you will need additional gear such as a good camera, lighting, tripods, etc. which can quickly be several hundreds of dollars...
Very useful. Thanks Alex! I certainly prefer the hand-drawn approach to some of the generated services I see out there. Couple of questions if I may: Do you ever ‘pre-draw’ the illustration in a faint outline and then ‘re-draw’ it during the recording (like a comic book artist would ink pencil lines). This could then be removed by increasing the contrast (or a chroma key).
Cheers! I have used the pre-draw idea in the past when the drawings were really complicated and needed to be exact but it makes it impossible to use colours because they get altered too much.
@@learnsustainability Interest. I assumed it would be possible to entirely exclude a single colour (similar to a green screen technique), but I'll have to experiment before I commit to a big project.
@@learnsustainability Another technique I wondered about, would be do complete the entire drawing, then record myself erasing it line by line. Reverse this in the edit and I think it might make quite a convincing effect! What do you think?

Yes, I am French 😃 15 minutes is quite long. The last video I posted on my channel is 11 minutes (sustainability analysis of an iPhone ua-cam.com/video/1OjlzJ8v9CA/v-deo.html) took about 2 weeks to make but I did other things at the same time so maybe 6-7 full days. 15 minutes might take me 9-10 days but it also depends on how much research is needed for the script, the complexity of the content to explain and to draw, how much time I decide to spend on sound design.
