    This film is one of the reasons I bought my ‘79 Trans-Am. I saw this movie as a kid,and said to myself “One day I’m gonna get one!”…and I did. A BEAUTIFUL Solar Gold Trans-Am. Thanks Steve!

      tim coker: I agree with you!! I had a
      1979 Firebird Formula, changed
      the engine to a 350 4 barrel, and had a blast for many years!! That
      car was definitely one of the best
      cars I've had too!
      Never let me down, either!! I had it
      up to 155MPH with more to go!!

      Which 400 engine?
      180hp or 220hp(T/A 6.6) ?
      Go for a 1971 400, great heads
      and 300hp(net),about 340hp gross
      AND 400 lbs torque(net!!)!!
      Enough to snap your neck!!!!

    • @mauserk98bnz44
      @mauserk98bnz44 6 років тому

      Nor Man it had this in it when I bought it and best I can tell you is that by the block cast numbers it is either a 75/76 and the heads have a 6A on them . I’m not totally sure but I believe it is not the 220 Hp engine but it is most definitely a 6.6 Pontiac engine. This car had a 301 going off the vin code and this will be a cloned T/A and a complete clone job.

    • @norman2999
      @norman2999 6 років тому

      mauserk98bnz44: You could always run the engine you have now while rebuilding a killer 400!!
      Then when your killer engine is ready, in it goes and....LOOK OUT!!
      You could also do the same for a tranny as well!! What is going to be the final ratio in the differential?
      3.43 or 3.73 would be fantastic!!
      With all that Pontiac torque on hand, I think 3.43's would be good because you could still "go" on the highway & have lots of "oomph" for the city burnouts & take-offs!!
      Either way you're gonna have one hell of a killer ride!!!! I want to build a 1970 1/2 to 1973 Formula Firebird. It'll happen....one day!!
      Good luck, my 'Bird Brother!!
      PS: why don't you put up some vids of the car in progress? I'm sure all the Firebird fanatics(like us!) would love to see your work in progress!!
      Think about it...PLEASE!!

    • @seikibrian8641
      @seikibrian8641 6 років тому +4

      That's a popular myth, and one the Steve McQueen himself corrected multiple times. He did SOME of his own stunts, particularly motorcycle riding (In 'The Great Escape' he even "chases himself" via editing, riding as both his own character and a German soldier, due his being the best rider on the set.), but for insurance reasons many other stunts were done by professional stunt men. The motorcycle jump in 'The Great Escape,' for example, was done by Bud Ekins, who also did the stunt driving in 'Bullitt.'

      its obvious it was a 403 auto you can clearly see it on the trailer at the end after it was blown up...all 400 4 speed cars were in hi demand because 79 was the last available year they all were special ordered...because the engine was not made in 79 they were stock piled in 78 for the 10th anniversary and special ordered cars....

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp 6 років тому +2

      I'd give some credence to a few cars being used here. During the explosion as the air cleaner rolls around, that appears to be a 403 air cleaner and not the W72 '79 air cleaner assembly. Plus as others have stated, the blue valve covers on the vehicle on the flatbed are a clear indicator of it not being a 400 (those had chrome valve covers in '79 as they were W72 cars). Of course, 301 cars had blue valve covers in '79, but it's very, very unlikely a 301 car would have been used due to the low power output.
