What I loved about Kristen Stewart's performance, was that she made me re-evaluate her as a performer and as an artist. I had long written her off as bad, absolutely dreadful and completely lacking anything of note. What she did with Spencer was to give me a performance that shocked, surprised and made me reconsider a figure (Diana), I thought myself all too familiar with. It was a powerhouse performance, of subtlety, of melodrama, of gothic horror, scenery chewing and heartbreak from one moment to the next. She did a complete 360 for me and I'm intrigued as to where she goes from here.

I know Twilight kinda tainted her reputation for a while but she’s turned in some great performances both before and after that saga. Spencer is an obvious one, but she was also great in Panic Room, Speak, Personal Shopper, Seberg, The Runaways, Crimes of the Future, the list goes on fr. I’m glad people are giving her a chance again cuz she’s a real powerhouse imo

I can't agree more with your choices. Tick, Tick, Boom was my personal favorite movie of that year and it broke my heart when it didn't get the Best Picture nomination. Andrew Garfield was the Best Actor that year. I'll go as far as saying that Will Smith wasn't even the second Best performer in that category; Benedict was also superb!
The biggest robbery that night, in terms of nominations was Denis missing out on Best Director. While the biggest one in terms of wins was Andrew Garfield not winning Best Actor (and this has nothing to do with the slap).
Btw, I loved Luca. What do you think about its gay undertones? The director or producer has always brushed it off but I think they do exist in the movie. That was a strong year for animated films as well!
As always, your videos are amazing!

Kristen Stewart is my favorite 2021 nomination too. What she did in the role of Princess Diana was absolutely remarkable down to the accent, mannerisms and even posture. Diana's personal chef and bodyguard even said out of all the portrayals of Diana ever done, Kristen was the most accurate. I always knew she could pull it off especially since this was coming from Pablo Larrain who did Jackie, ten years ago who would've thought she would be playing this iconic woman let alone get nominated for an Oscar. She absolutely redefined herself with this and I'm so glad she wasn't snubbed, the best actress lineup that year was pretty impressive and she beat heavy competition to get in. Spencer should've received more nominations like costumes and cinematography. It was stunning and was made as a deep psychological character study of this famous woman instead of being like a generic formulaic biopic. Kristen was my favorite that entire awards season and I'm very excited to see what she does next.

Both Drive My Car and Worst Person In The World are two of the greatest films I've seen in the last few years, and completely life-changing movies for me. Even when both were up for International Feature, I thought to myself that it'd be fine if it'd be either winning, or even a tie with both winning. I'm glad that both are in the Criterion Collection where they belong now, as both are practically essential viewing for any adult going through struggles with either growing up and finding your place in life, or even in dealing with serious loss and how to find the path ahead. Thank goodness we live in a world where these two movies exist.

💯 in agreement. The shots of the musical sequences, the lighting used to capture the anticipation of the rumble, and the color, fabrics, and movement to where the camera took you enriched each scene, and filled my heart with pure joy. The shot on the balcony, then to have the camera move away from Rachel's face to get Tony in the frame...PERFECTION!

Suggestion for a new series: The Silver Oscar
Usually Brian talks about which nomination might have been the second or third option in certain years and/or categories, I think it would be interesting a video series where he would say which nominee was second in a particular category and decade.
For example: "The second place Best Picture nominees in the 2000s", "The second place Best Actress nominees in the 1960's", "The second place Best Director nominees in the 1980s"...

    10. The Lost Daughter 🤢🤢🤮🤮👎🏿👎🏿
    9. Cyrano. This movie was cursed since its production. The costumes were fine, but it was a very forgetful film. Plus, nothing in this world was beating Cruella, you could've left this category alone.
    8. West Side Story. Yeah, that cinematography was 🔥. If there was no Dune, I think it wins this easily.
    7. Kirsten Dunst. OH GOD NO. Not only was this a bad performance, it's a bad movie. I could never understand the hype behind this film, it is so bland and uninteresting. But it's gay, so the gays loved it, I guess. I can't tell you how happy I was when it lost nearly everything it was up for. Overhyped garbage.
    6. Drive My Car. Probably. Still haven't seen it.
    5. The Worst Person in the World. YES!! GODDAMMIT YES!! THIS WAS THE BEST FILM OF 2021. SHOULD'VE GOTTEN 6 NODS AND WON AT LEAST 4 OF THEM.
    4. Dune. For Best Picture?? I mean, it does make the most sense after winning 6 awards, but if you don't give the director a nod, it's kind of a hard sell. But that best picture lineup was so weak that it honestly could've snuck in, but it would've been a much worse win.
    3. Luca. I guess. It wasn't awful, but also wasn't great. It would've been a middling win, but nothing was touching Encanto. Another category you could've skipped.
    2. Kristen Stewart. Smh, again, I will never understand what people saw in this movie. I was so baffled by its reception that I went and saw it 3 times in theaters just to see what it was I could've missed. But no, it never came. There were a lot of overhyped performances this year, but this one is at the top of the list, and I LOVE Kristen Stewart, but give me her work in Happiest Season any day over Spencer. You should've gone with Penelope on this one.
    1. Andrew Garfield. HELL YES!!! CORRECT. ABSOLUTELY. FANTASTIC. HE WAS PERFECT. SHOULD'VE WON EVERYTHING. TICK TICK BOOM DESERVED MORE NOMINATIONS IN GENERAL.

So poetical so empathetic so real.
Academy dont give kristan stewart the oscar becase the story in film not about all life of diana.

    Christan Stewart surprise me becase
All the time she show us manly side.

    About temmy faye🤔
The eyes of temmy fay was the worst film in that year.

Best Supporting Actress, Kirsten Dunst: Agree. Wasn't impressed with this particular performance, but she was long overdue. Melancholia, Bachelorette, Marie Antoinette, Interview with the Vampire. All Oscar-worthy performances.
Best Director, Drive My Car: Agree.
Best Original Screenplay, The Worst Person in the World: Agree.
Best Picture, Dune: Disagree. Great on a technical level, everything else is meh and boring.
Best Animated Film Luca: Disagree. Marcel the Shell is superior to that entire category combined.
Best Actress, Kristen Stwart: DISAGREE. I do not understand the love for her. Her performance in Spencer is LAUGHABLE. So bad. Such a bad actress.
Best Actor, Andrew Garfield: Disagree. It's a good performance and better than Will Smith. But Paul Mescal, Benedict Cumberbatch or Colin Farrell deserved it more.

Paul Mescal? Colin Farrell? I think you're in the wrong year.

Not Kristen Stewart 😑🤦‍♂️. I agree she has never been better than that film. But ALL the other 4 actresses were better

I think his main point was that her inclusion was a great nomination, one of the best of that year.

For me she was the best in this category and one of the greatest performances not only for 2021 but of all time!!
