    My GP put me on Lipitor about 20 years ago. Within a month I had muscle pain in my thighs and significant hair loss. I spoke to my GP regarding the hair loss when I realized it began about a month after starting on this statin and was told it was because I was getting older and my hair was thinning. I then went to my pharmacist and asked if there was any correlation. He didn’t think there was but checked on line and found that 1% of people taking statins get ALOPECIA. I immediately stopped the Lipitor and my hair stopped “thinning” and the thigh cramps stopped within another month. I WILL NEVER TAKE A STATIN AGAIN. Drs prescribe lots of drugs without knowing or warning patients about possible side effects.

      They also never check the interactions they might have with other drugs or supplements you are taking. Your healthcare is your responsibility. I do not do anything my doctor suggests until I research it myself. Then if I agree I’ll do it. If I don’t agree then I’ll have another conversation with my doctor.

    Statins can be very dangerous. I had a stroke, the kind that affects vision. When I was discharged from the hospital the neurologist prescribed 80 mg of Lipitor, which I took in the evening. After a a couple of days on the drug when I would just start to fall asleep I would stop breathing (a side effect of statins) and bolt awake gasping for air. This would go on all night and I would end up staying up all night and not sleep. By next day it had worn off enough that I’d nap all day. Then it would repeat the next night. I called my neurologist to report this. He did not believe me. I asked why he put me on the medication, and he said because of my high cholesterol and progressive heart failure. I have neither of these conditions. I told him I would not take the medication and asked if he read my chart. What I found out is that prescribing a high dose of statin is standard practice when someone has a stroke, even though they may not need it, bc they assume you had a stroke due to high cholesterol and/or heart failure. My stroke was caused by a blood clot due to AFIB. I was furious that this is apparent,y standard protocol. Needless to say, I will not see that neurologist again. And I will not take a statin ever again either.

      I am 55 yr old male with idiopathic left ventricular cardiomyopathy. My cardiologist increased by Lipitor from 10mg to 20mg as well as my Entresto dosage. I currently suffer from sleep problems, nightmares, muscke aches, and most recently horrible anxiety and panic attacks. Recently, My PCP just prescribed me buspirone for the anxiety. Of course my cardiologist says my symptoms are from work stress and nothing to do with meds. I am upsetting my wife and kids because they see me acting like a fidgeting, nervous unable to cope child due to panic attacks . Cholesterol is vital to life, cell repair, and hormone manufacture..
    LDL is needed for atherosclerotisis, but is not causal by itself.
    Oxidized and glycated LDL is causal, so one should dig deeper.. what causes LDL to oxidize or glycate?
    Glycated is easy to answer. Elevated blood sugar increases glycation... So keep your A1C below 5.5.. but lower is even better.
    Polyunsaturated fats (PUFA) oxidize easily. When your LDL has high PUFA it oxidizes readily.
    When you eat lots of saturated fat, your LDL will go up, but it won't readily oxidize, unless elevated PUFA is present.
    Eat lots of PUFA and saturated fats? Now you have lots of LDL which can oxidize easily.. recipe for disaster.
    There are studies showing saturated fat promotes satiety, and people simply eat less calories, vs if they eat PUFA instead.
    On top of this eating lots of PUFA, particularly Linoleic Acid, C18:2n6, will cause mitochondrial damage due to the presence in the cardiolipin molecule. Mid term this will lead to increased insulin resistance,and poor metabolic function on a cellular and macro level, aka elevated A1C. Long term cell death, or cancer.
    Saturated fats also promote your mitochondria to reverse electron transport, which kicks out Reactive oxygen species.
    You'd initially think this is a bad thing, but this actually signals the cell to become insulin resistant, as it has plenty of energy available. If this is a fat cell, it will stop getting bigger. With the proper hormonal signalling, such as low insulin, the fat cell will start to empty instead, leading to weight loss. The context of insulin resistance matters.
    With all that.. why would you want to lower cholesterol with a statin?
    Simply stop eating excessive PUFA, sugar, and carbs over your personal threshold. This is what turns LDL bad.
    As you heal metabolically, and your bodies PUFA stores drop to appropriate levels, your higher LDL won't matter for atherosclerotisis. You'll also likely live longer, as studies show higher LDL is associated with longer life, which makes sense as cholesterol is needed for so much.

    • @lilolmecj
      @lilolmecj 3 роки тому

      That was a really well thought out response. On PUFAs are you speaking of polyunsaturated vegetable oils? I absolutely eat more sugar than is best for health, but otherwise I eat a really good diet.

    • @Unsensitive
      @Unsensitive 3 роки тому +2

      @@lilolmecj PUFA can come from any source, and adultered most of our food chain in the past 150 years.
      Vegetable/seed oils are the primary source, but there are less know sources.
      Monogastric animals, aka non ruminants, will sequester the PUFA in their own fat. So if they are fed a high PUFA diet, then their meat will be higher PUFA as well.
      This is a major concern for pigs, chicken, etc. They can be as high in PUFA as some of the seed oils.
      Cows and other ruminants convert much of the PUFA. While they are less good than grass fed, they are not that much higher in PUFA. Though I've read that grain fed runinants are higher in branched chain amino acids, which can have other issues

    I am ordinarily a notably calm, kind person. Two weeks after starting statins, I was constantly agitated and prone to yell at my wife and kids. They thought I was going crazy. My wife became convinced it was the statins, and when she asked me to go off of them, I accused her of wanting me dead. Luckily, when I said that, I realized my behavior and thought patterns were getting strange, so I stopped taking the statin. Within a few days I was back to normal. I told my doctor, he did not believe my story. We tried a different statin drug...same thing happened, I became a raging nut! Stopped the statin, I became myself again. A year of two later, my doctor told me he had another patient with the same side affect (so now he believed me). If I am not mistaken, Pfizer’s Lipitor sales went way over $130 BILLIONS before 2014 despite of multiple legal cases with broad range of side effects and damages to patients. Beside of side effects that were mentioned in this video, there are at least a dozen of publications that show severe memory impact as a result of statins use. The question about the ability of statins to lower the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction is still open. It’s shocking, but now long term double bling clinical trails were performed. Regulate your cholesterol by your diet. These drugs are given so easily as part of protocols, even in patients with moderately enhightened cholesterollevels. Same counts for all those stomachmedications. They not only inhibit production of stomachacid/pepsine, but also prevent the absorbtion of vitamines what can lead to deficits if taken for a longer period. Except when really ill, do not take them.

I know these drugs help some people, but it doesn't work for everyone. We are all different and doctors should not expect that everyone will have the same benefit from taking these meds. In some cases the Statins cause terrible side effects. I also think some doctors have invested heavily in the companies that manufacture these meds and they are thinking of how getting everyone on these meds in middle age will drive up the value of their stock. I also believe that when God decides it is time for you to go home, you go.

Depression-often diagnosed in a middle aged to elderly patient, is it common in that age group (ditto for the rest of the symptoms). Is the use of statins causal in the side effects or just a witness to issues common to the age group? Is it more common in under 40 users? or do the studies look at the whole population of statin users where the demographics skew to older patients??

      If you have been taking atorvastatin for 20+ years then its not working. You should stop taking it and use diet and exercise instead. My doctor that I have now took me off atorvastatin which my previous doctor had me taking for several years. Within days I started having relief from the side effects. I was having to take Lyrica to combat the side effects and now I don’t have to take that anymore as well. My new doctor told me that I shouldn’t have to take the atorvastatin long term. That diet and exercise is the best way to deal with things. I just got my test results back from having a full panel of tests done and I’m doing way better now than I was while taking that drug. My doctor had me do basically the Keto type diet. Low carbs with high protein and fat. So I eat all the meat I want plus lots of green veggies and breakfast is usually eggs with cheese and either ham or bacon. Sometimes I make an omelette with several eggs plus bell peppers (green, red, yellow) and diced ham and any other veggies I want covered in shredded cheese. Sometimes I put some avocado on that omelette as well. So mainly I avoid bread in all forms, no sugar also I make sure to take in enough salt (with iodine), potassium and other electrolytes along with plenty of water. Black coffee or a good tea such as PG Tips or Tetley’s British blend with milk but without sugar are ok as well. I’m now off the atorvastatin for 5 years and I’m doing better than ever. Cholesterol levels are right where they should be and my A1C is perfect so I don’t take diabetes meds anymore either.
      Seriously just fix your diet and exercise even if that’s just a walk around your neighbourhood. I found that I enjoy lifting weights so I do that and the only cardio I do is a ten minute walk twice a day.
      You can do it, you simply have to choose to do it. Check out Dr Eric Berg he’s on UA-cam and has a billion videos to get you going. In fact he has a series of videos for beginners Keto 101 that are a great way to start. DO IT!! You will love how you feel within the first week or two. Cheers

    There is also the issue that the reduction and absolute risk of a heart attack is relatively low, leading to a number needed to treat (NNT) that is in the range of 100. What that means is that in order to prevent even a single myocardial infarction, you would need to treat ~100 patients with statins. And if you look at al- cause mortality statns appear to have no beneficial effect. Some relatively recent studies have shown a U-shaped relationship between total cholesterol and all-cause mortality, with an optimum at a total cholesterol of a round 240.

    I have been taking statins for several years and have had headaches, feeling tired, disrupted sleep and a dull ache now and again in my right side, I have stopped them for a while and my headaches have gone and the ache in my side has almost disappeared, other side effects were a dry throat and cough, all gone but I still feel tired all the time and blame much of it from contracting the covid virus and the awful vaccinations that I believe have lowered my immune system because since the virus I have had several bouts of flu like symptoms, not severe but a nuisance. Fingers crossed it will resolve itself.
