I love playing along with Domino Line on my bass, but of course I have to stop as soon as this solo starts and just listen because Sakurai rachets the difficulty up to 1000. Truly unbelievable amount of skill here
Most improvised solos are difficult. Honestly, all improvised playing is difficult to some extent. Some of the hardest stuff to play for me is super improvised Jazz pieces on Bass. Eugene Wright and some of his crazy walking improv pieces are like hundreds and hundreds of lines long, every single walk different. Learning them takes ages.
😅I love his playing because he'll play some of these mind blowing slap sections but a lot of their songs have excellent fingerstyle playing too. His playing on their self titled album hooked me
@@JonHop1 This live performance isn't technically improvised though, sounds pretty much record identical. A few phrases are extended here and there but this is pretty much what he plays on the original record. Maybe that itself was improvised, but either way it's still a testament as to how good Sakurai is.
@@Rikkii2 bro im talking about the bass line in general... Studio recordings can have a ton of improvisation.. Just listen to James Jamerson on Motown or Chuck Rainey on Steely Dan... you rarely ever saw a note-for-note repeating line
@@Rikkii2If by "original record" you mean Mint Jams, that's straight up a live album of this exact concert! If you mean the album the song was first on, I don't think there was a bass solo in there
Still hard to think Mint Jams is a live album hahaha, it sounds so perfect and well produced it just doesn't click that it was done OUTSIDE of a studio. Brilliant musicians, for all iterations of the band.
Casiopea is one of the first bands that made me realize that Funk & Jazz is worldwide. Tetsuo Sakurai also had a nice stint with Greg Howe, Dennis Chambers, and Akira Onozuka with the Gentle Hearts live album in 2004. Killer stuff if you check it out.
YES! I love Casiopea so much. I seriously think that they are some of the greatest live performers ever. They’re so energetic, charismatic, and all of them are just great at what they do. So talented, it’s insane. If this or the other video where they’re all trading the solo are your first exposure to Casiopea, definitely give their music a listen. Of course the song this solo comes from, Domino Line is always a great place to start. Also any Casiopea fans that are in need of more Casiopea, there’s a great video here on UA-cam titled “The Golden Years (The Best Of Casiopea 1979-1985)” that has so many amazing performances.
Tetsuo Sakurai sounded like Louis Johnson back then. But today, he sounds like Victor Wooten. He is currently in a trio with the keyboardist from this very band ( Casiopea - Minoru Mukaiya ) and drummer Akira Jimbo. All three of them look like grandpa's playing serious prog-jazz today. They still smoke. Check them out. #Katsushika Trio.
🙌🏼I love this solo and has done it since the record was released: I had it “on repeat” on my walkman. Since it was on cassette I had it lined up several times in a row to save battery😂
Casiopea is one of my favourite jazz fusion artist, I recommend every one to listen "midnight rendezvous" such a beautiful guitar play too. Perfect music for drive car in the night.
I've always liked to describe Casiopeia as weather radar music that grew up and followed it's dreams, and I mean that in a good way; Mint Jams is my favorite album of all time.
you should do a video transcription of their song SPACE ROAD, the unison solo is actually insane! issei noro, tetsuo sakurai and minoru mukaiya all playing the same riff together
domino line! i've listened to this on repeat for months now ever since fightman was transcribed, i was wondering when their 1982 live domino line bass solo would be transcribed lol
This was absolutely amazing^^ Went straight to TOP2 bass solos / songs of all time. Can't tell if this is better or "Portrait of Tracy". But simply fucking amazing^^
I'd say the title still goes to Frank Zappa, partially for his own virtuosity as a guitarist and composer and also for the sheer number of absolute geniuses who played with him over the years. Seriously the list of his collaborators includes the likes of Jean-Luc Ponty, George Duke, Tina Turner, Al Di Meiola, Terry Bozio, Steve Vai, Vinnie Colaiuta, Adrian Belew, Chad Wackerman, Michael Brecker, Pierre Boulez, Sting, and dozens more.
Cassiopea is way groovy. You may also want to check out Koinonia ua-cam.com/video/8A0OSXFvBUo/v-deo.html with the great Abe Laboriel Sr. and of course Weather Report with the legendary Jaco. Both bands feature Alex Acuña on drums/percs.

i started listening to casiopea around 2021 because of this song, today i have two physical albums, a record of the album HALLE and a japanese CD of the album The Soundgraphy
try listening to their song “Misty Lady” it has a similar bassline! I recommend starting with the Perfect Live II version bc they generally sound better live than studio recorded
No offense to you or him, but I feel that lesser known players like this guy should be the ones getting highlighted… instead of UA-cam slap bass meme video makers… just sayin. (I think he’s insanely talented too, don’t get me wrong)
