  • Whether you use accessible parking spaces or not these are some things I think are important things to consider when parking your car. We'll discuss what are access aisles and access lanes, why even someone who walks might need the accessible space, why access aisles/lanes are necessary to keep clear, and more!

    I hope you all enjoy this video! Since I mention it, I'd like to explain my need for an accessible vehicle for those who are curious. My disabilities include chronic pain and fragility of my joints and as time passes it becomes harder and riskier for me to carry my powerchair, even with help. With an accessible vehicle I can travel independently and without risking injury.

    I never considered the point you brought up about disabled people having to take up 2 “regular” parking spaces when they don’t have access to the aisle!! Thank you for bringing that up!

    I had an issue relating to this a couple days ago at my college. I had parked my van that has a wheelchair lift that comes out the side in the handicap spot and went to class. When I got back there was a truck parked in the slashed lines on the side my ramp came out on and I couldn't get in the car. I ended up having to call campus police and get them to get in contact with the driver to get them to move the truck. When the guy came out to move it he saw me and simply said: "I was just running in for a minute". This kind of stuff happens all the time with things like handicap bathrooms as well because of the mentality of "what are the chances a person who actually needs this is going to come here in the next couple minutes. Although the campus security handled it well and the guy felt bad, it makes me feel a little better knowing he won't be making that mistake again! Oh and also I ended up having a bladder failure the *SAME DAY* because there was an AB person doing their last-minute homework in the only hc stall in the building and I ended up having to miss class to go home and change. Moral of the story, *ITS NOT THAT HARD TO JUST USE THE NON DISABLED THINGS IT LITERALLY TAKES LIKE 2 EXTRA SECONDS AND PREVENTS ME FROM GETTING A UTI*

    • @Ravenghunter
      @Ravenghunter 5 років тому +2

      Unfortunately people don't think of anyone but themselves and rarely get the opportunity to learn how wrong their "few minutes" for them is a major headache for someone else. I don't have patience (actually my bladder doesn't) so if I needed the hc stall and I could tell they shouldn't be using it I would of knocked (banged) on the door until they came out :)
      Good luck in college :)

    I recently had foot surgery for a bone spur I had for 2 years. 6 months before the surgery I was given a medical boot which limited my mobility somewhat. This journey has opened my eyes to how inconsiderate certain aspects of my city are.
    Your videos have helped me out so much and have taught me so much.

    I absolutely LOVE your channel! You explain everything so well. Even though I am disabled myself, I can walk and never thought about people needing two parking spots to get their wheelchair out. You're video's are so clear and well filmed. My goal is to be able to make video's like you some day. My video's are juist me talking about living with chronic illness inside, because I don't go out too much. And when I do I really don't have the energy to film it!

    Thank you for making this video!! I have a placard because eds and pots make me unable to walk for long distances (i don't use a wheelchair... probably "yet"). But I've always seen other disabled people leave their carts in the middle between-cars wheelchair access lane. I thought this made sense, because the cart putaway spot is far to walk to, so I followed. I'm so sorry that I've done that for the past few months! I wish they were marked. Where I live, they don't even have the lines so being an empty space, I thought that was correct. But now I know! Thanks again! I don't wanna be a jerk!

  • @princesslulu5795

    I have had increased difficulty with walking long distances, lifting heavy stuff, and standing or sitting for long periods without pain. If I’m feeling better I’ll park farther away but unfortunately the last year or so it’s very hard for me. The closest Wal-Mart to my current residence people are so inconsiderate. People taking accessible spots with no placard, leaving carts in spaces, letting their children play with motorized carts, etc. the store also rarely has anyone on the floor to help with getting items you can’t reach or lift independently. The pharmacy also is not very handicap accessible at all

  • @michelleswanson6347
    @michelleswanson6347 3 роки тому

    I really like how said you are considerate and try to use the close parking spots if open, so maybe AB people could also be considerate and park further. I don't think most AB would park farther, but it's a great explanation to AB why I have to use the handicapped parking even on a day I can walk a little. If they don't leave the non handicapped close spots open on a day I can walk a little, then it's too far for me to walk, and my only option is handicapped parking

    The snow one is the one that really annoys me - every winter we bring up the same complaint and then summer comes and we don't have to worry about it for a while, but then they do the same thing the next winter.

  • @shayelea
    @shayelea 5 років тому

    We had a couple incidents at work that resulted in the parking lot being full - one, an event at another tenant’s, and the other, a big snow storm that left probably 20% of the available parking spots piled high with plowed snow. I’ve never seen so many vehicles without placards parked in accessible spots, and even in the access aisles! To be fair, there isn’t really any street parking nearby, so people were probably desperate. But it’s not cool. I was flaring and would have used my placard anyway (I use my placard when I’m flaring or when the other option is to park like a quarter mile away...I never have the spoons for that!) but it made me nervous to leave work and go get lunch, because I wasn’t sure if there would be any accessible spots when I got back.

    Thank you soo very much for this video. I use a cane myself but I only started using it majority of the time about a year 2yrs after my illness came on strong. I still don't know what's wrong with me, but I definitely need my cane and am thinking about some sort of easier mobility device. I never knew about the access lanes, I just noticed the wider disabled parking spaces were for wheelchairs. Now I know not to put my shopping cart there at least. I would only do that if I couldn't make it to a return or back to the store. I will no longer do that however, I will just try to ask for help more.

    Last week I was at the mall with my friend. While we were trying to find parking because of the snow piles I say to her:
    “Well at least they didn’t put snow on the disabled parking spots”
    Literally seconds after I finished my sentence. I look right out my window to see snow on not one but in the middle of two disabled parking spots.

      Melissa Anjos I see that a lot. Apparently that’s where able bodied people think the snow needs to get dumped. 🤯 Because Disabled people never need to leave the house to get food or go to the doctor or go to work, or get clothing or medication and all the things out in the world that a person needs to survive...

      @@punky19761 They do that here a lot too. Push all the snow into the one accessible space. I once told a parking enforcement person from the city about it and she's like can't they park somewhere else? I'm like no...this is also one of the few parking lots within several blocks that also has ramped curbs at the cross walks. She didn't care.

    i wish you talked a little bit more about Van accessible parking. very often there are 2 parking places split by a lined area. the left spot will say van accessible and normal vehicles with placards are parked there. vans pretty much always have the ramp open on the right. so if you are in a normal vehicle and parking in the accessible parking maybe try to leave the van spot open. plus if you park on the right spot the lined area will be on the drivers side

      @@sarahasbury6608 absolutely! I'm not saying people who need to use the handicapped parking but don't have a van shouldnt use it, especially if it is the only spot left. Simply that if there are several open and you dont have a van, maybe use one of non van accessible spots. Cheers!

    There's an elderly woman who always, without fail, parks her big ol' Le Sabre in the access aisle between the two reserved spots. I'm pretty sure she's disabled (think I saw a placard last time), but it's frustrating regardless. She not only blocks the aisle, but also the store entrance. People with carts end up having to go to the end of the row to get to the rest of the lot. And I'm kind of afraid to say something because I don't handle confrontation well.

  • @NorseButterfly

    👏👏👏 I get so frustrated when there's no accessible parking! Where I live, we have 2 grocery stores... Walmart, which has an extreme amount of handicap parking spaces, until the garden area takes over 6-8 rows of the parking lot, and a home state grocery store, which is lacking in accessible parking spaces. The spaces they do have, are usually taken by cars with no placards or plates, or you can watch a young family or young person jump out and literally run into the store, while the car is still illegally parked. Store management won't do anything about these illegally parked cars, and because there's no sign saying there will be a fine, city police refuse to ticket.

    I am Peruvian and I have a physical disability. I have traveled to the US a few times and I've been amazed by all the signs and order these spaces have, which makes it much clear. My question is, can you really park using two lots? I didn't have a placard because I was just a tourist, so my family and I would find any parking space available. Great video.

    Make a video like this about accesible restroom stalls!! I’ve had to wait, in my wheelchair almost peed myself lol because stall was busy with what seemed a normal person. When I don’t have my wheelchair or oxygen tanks I try to use a normal stall in case a wheelchair user needs the accesible stall.

    I’m sorry, I had to laugh at pretzel cart 😆 but yes parking is a big issue when you’re disabled. Another thing to note is if you’re in a vehicle WAITING FOR SOMEONE, even if you have a placard or they have one, have some decency and don’t idle in the disabled spot!!!! Someone trying to go into the store with their wheelchair may need it. You’re taking up a space they need when you could be waiting in literally any other spot. Everyone has cell phones nowadays and the person you’re waiting for can text you when they need to be picked up at the entrance.

    When did you know you needed a chair? I have a hard time standing or walking for more than 10 minutes due to pain. Especially during times like right now, where my shoulder is subluxed and my left wrist is sprained. These injuries just pile onto the pain. Often times, in stores, there are no chairs available. I'm strongly considering getting an electric scooter that weighs less than 40 lbs and can collapse. I've been in PT for months and it is not improving much. I don't even know how to bring the idea up to my rheumatologist, because I'm scared he'll think I'm OOT or trying to 'act disabled.' He does not think of me as disabled. I think of myself as partially disabled... I mean, there is a point in which I must sit, even if it is on the floor. We seem to have a fundamental disagreement. I want to keep my mobility as much as possible, but I do suffer when I go out. Immensely.

      I walked past an accessible space yesterday. The "ramp" next to it (which was striped or else I wouldn't have taken it as an implication it was related to the space) looked like it was only a foot wide (it was an piece of sloped concrete leading up to the sidewalk proper for the strip mall).
      The closest actually accessible curb cut onto the sidewalk was on the other end of it.

    This may be an unpopular opinion but I don’t really care I strongly feel this way, don’t come for me. I really think at least half of the parking spaces should be disabled AND with the access zone on them. As far as I know, the Disabled community is the largest minority group in the world, so why are we having to fight over the same 1 to 3 parking spaces. It’s ridiculous and awful. Nobody got spoons for that. Especially since the able bodied folk are insisting more and more that we be out in the world, y’all need to make it so we can be out in the world, or else we won’t be there because we can’t. Frankly as a getting old disabled person, and with how the world is getting more violent, I like to stay at home, but that’s just not the world we’re living in. In order to survive, I have to often go out into the real world, even if at this point, I’d rather not.
