Bat Masterson Theme Song

  • This is the end clip from the 1960's Western, Bat MAsterson. Unlike other oaters, Bat didn't use a gun. He was intimidating enough that all he needed was his walking stick. Sort of like the movie Walking Tall set in the Old West. The end theme also started before the ending credits. to give it more of a dramatic, movie like
    feel.
This clip is from the episode Stampede At Tent City. It is available on TV Western Series Vol 1 at HoughsVideos.50Megs.Com

I remember watching this series in Iran where the official language is Persian not English. It is February 1st, 2023. His name came to my mind and I asked you tube to play the theme song. I have lived in the U.S. since 1977. One thing I don't remember is whether as a kid I was watching it in English or it was dubbed in Persian. Time flies so the say. Rest in peace Mr.berry.

I used to watch this as a kid. Loved the song. Google the biography of the real Bat Masterson. I was blown away. He really was more of a legend in real life than the T.V. character. A true Renaissance man. He ended up being a sports writer for a newspaper in New York City.

    • @653j521
      @653j521 11 місяців тому

He had a number of skills, showing he was educated and gutsy, but that is hardly being a Renaissance Man. For instance, how was he on science and art? Did he write well on anything but sports? Was he any good as a businessman or was he more a dilettante? In that same era I would say Theodore Roosevelt closer to a true Renaissance Man. He was educated and gutsy, he owned and ran a ranch, got to be President, probably managed his rich family's assets, wrote many learned books on scientific subjects, went from being a dweeb to a tough guy, took a bullet and continued with the fat speech that had stopped the bullet from more than scratching his skin, had a huge family and escorted Alice on a world trip where she was referred to as Princess Alice in India, was an adventurer and a big game hunter, and a soldier, by all accounts he was a genius as well as a man who always remained a boy. That was the era of the amateur expert. You read up on subjects like archeology written by others like you--coming from money. He wrote a lot of the books other people used. He also had an ego as big as all outdoors and loved warfare until his son died as a soldier and then deflated like a balloon. Bigger than life. His selfishly splitting the vote ensured Wilson won. I don't know if he had any artistic talent beyond pictures for his books.

Growing up my grandpa was a huge western TV show fan. Every time I went to visit him he would always have a western on, and Bat Masterson was by far his favorite. Sadly he died about two years ago, and the very first thing I remember doing after I was able to stop crying was playing this song. Every once in a while I’ll pull it up and listen to it again to remember him.

The song was "Bat Masterson" and it was performed by Mr. Mike Stewart, a professional singer that did not receive billing. That is the way it was done in the 1950s. Mr. Mike Stewart recorded three songs in the children's album, Walt Kelly's ,the Songs of the Pogo in 1956 . You can hear his distinctive voice in this rare album.

Back when the west was very young,
There lived a man named Masterson.
He wore a cane and derby hat,
They called him Bat, Bat Masterson.
The trail that he blazed is still there.
No one has come since, to replace his name.
And those with too ready a trigger,
Forgot to figure on his marching home.
Now in the legend of the west,
One name stands out of all the rest.
The man who had the fastest gun,
His name was Bat, Bat Masterson.

I loved this show as a kid and later in high school read his biography. Also, the baritone singer, whoever he is, was great. But I did notice that in the silhouette at the end, Bat seems to be holding a wimpy pistol that doesn't even look like a Derringer. It should be a six-shooter that packs a wallop, which is the only thing I read about him shooting. Like the show, he really loved watching boxing and ended up a sportswriter on a paper in New York. Some famous gossip columnist met him as a young woman. I think it might have been Louella Parsons(?). Thanks for posting this great theme song.

He was quite a character, led several lives. To think, the "Wild West" days numbered about 7500. Goodness, what a world those guys born in the 1850s must have witnessed. Not that I have an extremely stable head, but it boggles my mind thinking of Earp, OK Corral, Doc HollidayIndian Wars, Sooners, discovery of kerosene (LET THERE BE LIGHT!), electricity, internal combustion engine, railroads, National Parks, radio, the stupendous growth of the US, and on and on. Easily the most glamorized and referenced time of American History.

He also resumed his writing career, becoming a sports writer & editor. He died in 1921 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx NY under his full name, William Barclay Masterson.

Hough have you been watching the same series as everyone else? Of course, he used his gun! Sparingly but he used it, in the same mode as Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, The Restless Gun, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and many other westerns of that period, who believed they should show a thinking man's way out of trouble. Although a fine show it was not that far different than many of its genre, In one episode, Bat shoots out a stagecoach window as Wyatt Earp declares that he was always the better shot, or in another he borrowed Wyatt's Buntline special to shoot it out with a killer. He did indeed use his gun and often, but only in self-defense and almost never to kill.

The singer was Michael stewart who was uncredited, he worked for the studio. For years no one knew who sang the song.

You are right, elalves. And my parents told me that Gene Barry were received by President João Goulart himself when he visited Brazil. The theme song is one of the best-known in TV series world!

The original "Bat Masterson" series ran on NBC from 1958-1961. Did you know that one of the producer-writers were David Friedkin and Morton Fine, who would go on to produced and write for several episodes of "I Spy"?

FYI, unless I am mistaken, that actress in the sequence in beginning of this clip is none other than Donna Douglas, who later wowed tens of millions of us then-teenage males as Elly May Clampett in The Beverly HIllbillies.

This is from an early episode, in the fall of 1958...in the original closing credits, the Kraft Foods logo would have been seen on the left hand side of the screen as well, as they sponsored the series on NBC during its entire run [the last two seasons on behalf of their "Sealtest" division]....
