  • In this episode, we explore the essential role of non-governmental organisations in confronting global emergencies.
The International Rescue Committee, initiated by Albert Einstein, is known for its impactful work.
The organisation delivers aid and hope to at-risk populations in conflict zones, notably Gaza, marked as the most hazardous area for civilians and aid workers.
Amid turmoil in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ukraine, David Miliband, president of the International Rescue Committee, talks to Al Jazeera.

Whether Gaza or the West Bank:
It was never about freeing the hostages, it was never about Hamas, it was always only about expanding the occupied territories and the associated ethnic cleansing and genocide. Israel has been pursuing this program since the NAKBA 1947-49, when 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes and 50,000 were killed.
It requires the intervention of all forces to stop this injustice.

A revealing slip of the tongue from David Miliband at 12:29. Miliband says "the ceasefire was broken in December 2008". Note use of the passive voice to obscure who actually broke the ceasefire. Professor Avi Shlaim of Oxford University explains that in June 2008: “Egypt had brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas… [that] was a success: the average number of rockets fired monthly from Gaza dropped from 179 to three. Yet on 4 November Israel violated the ceasefire by launching a raid into Gaza, killing six Hamas fighters.”
So the ceasefire "was broken" in November. Not December. And it "was broken" by Israel. I guess Miliband's excuse for not knowing this is his being distracted by the centre-left love fest of Obama's election on exactly that day: 4 November 2008.
It's a pity that Miliband can't at least acknowledge the view of his former boss Tony Blair who in 2017 asserted the international community should have tried to “pull Hamas into a dialogue”. Al Jazeera should have raised this point.

The led up the 2008 Gaza war is very much contested. Yes Israel launched a raid into Gaza which broke the ceasefire however Israel claims it did so to prevent the digging of a tunnel into Gaza for the purposes of kidnapping Israeli soldiers.

On why the US don't stop the crisis in Gaza, like the rest of his political colleagues Ed Miliband will not dare mention that the US, UK and other western political stack holders, are immensely lobbied, financially, by the Apatheid and Occupation supporting Jewish citizens in the west. South Africa wasn't having it.. hence the ICJ involvement.

Indeed, and taking Gaza will land lock the West Bank for big corporations who want to steal the rest of Palestine for their "settlers" aka THIEVES.

Western politicians have never been serious about solving the injustice of Palestinian dispossession of their lands. They all say 'it is complex' and other completely dishonest statements in order to just continue inaction. If it is complex now then that is because of the West's unquestioning support of savagery of the Israeli regimes with the Palestinians paying the price in death, dispossession, arbitrary imprisonment etc.
The Arab regimes have been happy with the status quo because they are wealthy and love money over everything else. They are beholden to the West and don't care about their own people so won't care about Palestinians.
All the fighting that we see in the world is just stupid. War is an idiot's game.

Not one straight answer. Just a load of rambling. The only clearly orated part was his promotion of his own organisation.

How far will Americans go to protect their sacred cow? Most people in the world now know that Americans speak with forked tongues: they say believe what we do not what we say, and we should.

yes there are, surely, unfortunately, always some dodgy agendas dividing people, splitting countries, creating chaos and always the same powers behind this...but Gaza is about colonialism, racism, let's not play their game and compare chaotic situations worldwide, i agree they all deserve our attention but once again, Palestine represents freedom from colonialism, stolen land, humiliation, killings, fachisme and it concerns every single person who s been impacted directly or indirectly in the past and sees himself in the suffering of Palestinians

David would bring a depth of practical experience about the plight of refugees, and more important, the causes of conflict.
He must regret his support for the War in Iraq, and apologise and make amends the damage to peace and int security.
Should be consider returning to politics he would be in pole position to lead the LP, and the first Jewish PM of the uk.(No Disraeli was not a Jewish PM)
That should put an end to the false lies spread by tory hq about anti semitism in the LP.
The typical racist tory Media had a field day destroying his brother Ed depicting his attempt to down a bacon buttie. We can expect more of the same from the tory gutter press when the Election is called.
