Troy is the "secret weapon" of Nightwish. He plays about 18 instruments, has a beautiful soft voice and is with the band since 2007. He became an official member in 2013, together with Floor. It also was his idea to invite Richard Dawkins to join the album "Endless forms most beautiful". He gave Tuomas some books of this scientist and Tuomas liked them very much. The cooperation between Tuomas and Troy is a "match made in heaven" (also in their other band Auri).
Troy not only did great fingerpicking, towards the end he also uses the guitar to provide some percussion. I was really really impressed when I heard this the first time (over 3 years ago).
At the end Troy turns away with a grin on his face as if to say "I can't beleive she did that." They did this song acoustic when I saw them last year in Maryland (2 day drive from SW FL) . The rest of the band took a break when they sat down for this song. It was magic. One more off my bucket list. Cheers.
Ok, so here's a list: Uilleann pipes, tin whistle, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone Plus, of course, any object that can't run fast enough to get away from him - garden hosepipe for example.
The second verse in the song was written specifically for Floor, and it describes how she met her husband, Hannes van Dahl (the drummer of Sabaton). Furthermore Tuomas Holopainen specifically wrote the songs on Human || Nature extra difficult for Floor, because she had said that she likes a challenge. And I saw an analysis by a top level Opera singer who told not only that Floor sings this with perfect technique, but also that it is full of difficult jumps, strange placings of accents and word breakoffs, etc. Which Floor executes perfectly, allthough the first time she got this song to try it out she asked Tuomas Holopainen: "Where am I supposed to breathe"?
If you want to hear them perfectly all 3 together lookup the "Come cover me" Live-Version from the Decades Tour in Buenos Aires. It is so beautiful hearing the 3 together. Also from Planet Rock is a acoustic Version of NEMO!
I would like to recommend you an acoustic presentation of Floor. Here she sings a Puccini opera aria entitled 'O mio bambino caro'. If you haven't heard that, you don't even know Floor's abilities.
I have seen vocal coaches talk about Floor's vocal in this performance and they all said that while they may seem safe, they are nothing but. For example in the first couple of verses, even though she is not singing super high, in a single phrase she goes through multiple vocal ranges and passages, with no slides to help, having to hit all the notes straight on the pitch, which is extremely difficult and in a later portion, she has to sing phrases in a very syncopated manner, while once again hitting notes in different ranges. So basically Floor just makes it look easy, which is what differentiates virtuosos from everybody else.
Troy joined Nightwish in 2007 as a touring/session musician and became a full time member the same time as Floor in 2013. He appears in almost all songs these days, but going back to early albums, he puts in an appearance only on some songs. At Wacken 2013 you'll see him in, "I Want My Tears Back". Troy has been singing with Nightwish going back to at least Wacken, but his voice is not high in the mix and the camera is usually on Floor and Marko. If you keep a watch for Troy during live videos, you'll see him at the mic when he's not playing the bouzzouki or the pipes. He has taken on a much larger role with the departure of Marko. Troy has a mellow, warm voice, but he doesn't have a lot of power, so his contributions tend to be more subtle, though in recent performances of songs like "Seven Days to the Wolves" he's going for it.
He sings lead in “Harvest” that they have had on the setlist during the Human Nature tour. And I really must say that I do love his voice. At has so much emotion and warmth.
For those sentimental moments with your best buddy, there's also these beautiful live moments: "Nightwish - The Islander (Live At Tampere)", "Sonata Arctica - Tallulah (Live YLE TV)" and "Poets of the Fall - Angel (Alexander Theatre Sessions / Episode 7)".
He plays the Bazooka (big electric mandolin) bagpipes, flutes, guitar....he does it all and is 300% muscisian. He is with NW since 2007 gentleman. He was also at wacken, came on stage when he had parts to play.
The song is from the most recent album, Human:II:Nature. Tuomas wrote the 2nd verse for Floor, her husband Hannes, and their daughter Freya. Floor's eyes did not stay dry when he told her about it. You were thinking of Troy's Irish Bouzouki, a relative of the Mandola. He does play electric guitar occasionally as well (he plays PRS), sometimes with EBOW. To hear the electric version of this song, the lyric video is great, or live from Deichbrand or Hellfest 2022.
it's easy for many to just say ,wow that was really good & well executed , but taken into consideration this was LIVE and unedited, done in one take & Floor sitting ,then it becomes absolutely amazing and next level.
Enjoyed it, thank you. Troy and Floor also performed the Nightwish Iconic song " NEMO " on this venue. Look forward to your next. Q....What does Troy play /. A...Whatever you put into his hand! Be well.
I've seen Nightwish live in December 22 and was looking forward to that performance. But the sung together another song: Our Decades in the Sun. This is also a very beautiful ballad but from the former album Endless Forms most Beautiful.
I second this suggestion, ist's really a beautiful song.. May I suggest another song by Nightwish- Edema Ruh live at Baltic Princess Cruise in HD. According to Floor 1st time performed here. Thanks for your reaction s. Greetings from Germany❤
The main guitar player Emppu played acoustic guitars in the early records, but I think he has never played acoustics live. When Marko joined in 2002 as the bass player, he also started to play the acoustic guitars when needed and Emppu has played only electric guitar since then. Marko has played some acoustic guitars live too, with his double neck bass/acoustic guitar combo. Then Troy later joined as pipe/whistle player first, and then also started playing the bouzouki and acoustic guitar and even some electric guitars in live setting too. This performance could have been with either Troy or Marco, both would have been able to play this and sing the harmonies. But I guess Troy did this, because Planet Rock is in UK, and Troy lives there, so he didn't have travel that far for just playing two songs. Troy has a background in Irish folk bands, and I think you can hear that in his playing and sound. That's not how the typical rock guitarist would have played this song. I remember Troy telling in some interview, that he did the arrangement for this acoustic version himself and Floor just traveled straight to this performance. They didn't practice it beforehand, but only briefly just before performing it. I think that tells something about the musical talent these guys have.
Marco is a classically trained guitarists which is why he took over a lot of the acoustic parts. Sadly he had left or was in the process of leaving the band by the time of this recording.
If you need a strong follow-up on this acoustic song - Troy and Floor also did 'Nemo' acoustic in that Planet Rock Radio 2020 session Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/FC7HYfc5y0A/v-deo.html And Troy is actually a phenomenal musician - he is formidabel using the E-bow on his guitar (While your lips are still red, Wembley 2015) - or more singing with kind of Floor backing (Carpenter, Buenos Aires 2018) or My Walden, Tampere 2015. ** Another acoustic - Jost Van Den Broek, piano and Floor - Alone!! (at least as good as Ann Wilson's cover of this I-10 song)
I really enjoy your reactions! I love "Shoemaker" also from Human Nature album. I know you're doing acoustic this week but put it on your radar! Live of course awesome but any version is delightful. I was lucky enough to see them live May 2022 when they toured the US. They are incredible.
And the vocal melodies with single syllables suddenly jumping high were written for Floor. Tuomas knew he didn't have to hold back, she'll figure how to sing them.
Reacts to Joelma when he was a member of the band Calypso live in the Amazônia (Brazil) in 2004. And then he reacts to Joelma in his solo career live in the Amazônia in 2022 (Block 1 and Block 2). She is considered the greatest performer in Brazil, and one of the few who don't use playback, her face is swollen because she contracted Covid 4 times and her blood was clotting, but even so she managed to record this DVD, like almost 50 years. From Rio de Janeiro
Great reaction guys. From their most recent album Human Nature. Tuomas said that he specifically wrote vocal lines to challenge Floor, Marko, and Troy. You can see that in the rapid pitch changes along with quick words. This song is Tuomas's beautiful ode to human empathy. The second verse was written by Tuomas as a thanks to Floor for joining Nightwish . During the last part of the current tour a heavily pregnant Floor smiles so big when she sings the line "Now there's one who came from me."
This song is special, a song about human empathy...We really need to care more, and fight less .... I really Like the original version, but that acoustic version just hit's so well into my soul and heart ❤. It is more personal...Also, this songs message, is more Powerful in this way, than its original version !!! I was fortunate enough to see this song played acoustic Live and it was beyond beautiful .... The second verse Tuomas wrote for Floor, her husband Hannes van Dahl and their daughter Freja. This is Tuomas way to say: Thank you Floor for saving the band back in 2012 and make us great again. he wrote the part "We met where the cliff greets the sea" about her relationship with Hannes van Dahl, the drummer of Sabaton (although is also a clear reference to Élan), and "Now there’s one who came from me / A child of light, another tale", which is about her giving birth to their daughter Freja. How cool is that? I mean, he really did what the song is about: human empathy. And what a better way to show it by dedicating a little part of the song for his friend and bandmate? She said she went to tears when he mentioned it to her. And I can see why, it is a beautiful song. Plus: There is another Acoustic version of Ninghtwish song "Nemo" ! AND, Troy joined Nightwish as a member at the same time as Floor did !!!!! NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.
I subbed today...... I'm really enjoying you guys and your reactions are very raw and genuine and I appreciate that so if I can ask where in the United States are you? I'm here in New Jersey and I was fortunate enough to see Nightwish on mother's Day two years ago and the experience was just amazing and one of the best part was I ran into at least 10 people that react to Nightwish........awesome!!!
fyi, This acoustic arrangement of Hows the Heart, and also Our Decades in the Sun have been played during the recent Nightwish concert tour of 2022/2023. Usually in the concert they are gently backed by the rest of the band later in the song. I like this fan cam of the acoustic version of Our Decades in the Sun in a packed arena in Poland. ua-cam.com/video/xlRz0CY3EVY/v-deo.html
Here's another acoustic performance worth reacting to (time offset to skip silent intro): Poets of the Fall feat. Triosis+ - Carnival of Rust (Alexander Theatre Sessions / Episode 12) ua-cam.com/video/fM0J5kRMGaw/v-deo.html
There is little that I despise as much as people that misuse a reaction to shamelessly promote some other artist which has no connection whatsoever with the reacted to artist. It shows complete disrespect.

Troy is a great acoustic player and is able to add the subtle vocal harmonies. Emppu does not sing. A very intimate version of this song. Thus the very gentle lower octave support vocal in the first two chorus'.
Smart channel newbies know that featuring NW will build your channel faster than anything else.Hardcore NW fans have boosted dozens of channels, but they all do the same basic dozen NW great playlist. Be more original to impress us. Throw in some more rare tracks and prove you're not another clone doing Wacken over and over. Human Nature...and earlier tracks. Thumbs up doodz ...from old hippie. Good musiks are forever. I feel blessed to have lived long enough to hear Floor and NW...my hard shell melts each time...
Not reaction to the lyrics...sad, a lot of value lost. There would have been plenty to talk about. I cannot understand why almost all reactors neglect that important component.
YOU have to do the original version as well! Totally different, and yet just as amazing!!!
There's a Reel of Floor saying two came from me. You can definitely see her Bambino bump
And now it's 10k subs! Great job!
very nice harmonizing between these two quite gifted musicians beautiful folky sound
Troy is playing the bazooka
Don't forget The Warning has some acoustic songs also
someone once asked Troy if there is anything he can't play. His answer was 'ice hockey' 😉

Troy plays many instruments. Bouzouki, guitar (acoustic and electric), flutes, whistles, Illean pipes and I'm sure I have missed some!
Yep. It was Bouzuki guys were thinking of.

I concur.

many people said troys fingernails are so ugly but he need this to fully control his instruments.
nice reaction as always, looking forward to the warning accoustic one, i wonder which one you will pick
