- WITH A capacity of just 4.2-litres, Holden’s 253ci V8 is one of the smallest of the old-school bent eights and it has never been at the top of anyone’s wish list. But maybe that will change after watching this video.
James “Cracka” Rees has a lot of love for Holden’s little screamer and he’s campaigned one in the burnout scene for years. In a highly competitive world full of 8-litre monsters his little Holden V8 makes a good accounting of itself and he’s finished on the podium at several high profile burnout events - including a third place at Summernats 23.
To give the 253 a few more cubes they bored it out massively and offset ground the crank which gives it a capacity of 292ci and with some quality go fast goodies the engine cranked up 515hp on the dyno at Powerhouse engines recently.
So if you’ve got a 253 or two hiding under the bench maybe it’s time to drag it out and have a play. What’s the worst that could happen?

I have no confidence that a 253 would hold together at that power level but that said I drove one for a few weeks with a QJet on it and I really did not want to give that car back. I loved it and it loved to rev.
Revving it up low HP levels and revving it up at high HP levels are 2 different things I feel.
Why wouldn't it hold together ? It is exactly the same as a 308 just has 202 ci six cylinder pistons , in fact it has less rotating mass so should last longer than a 308 !
might not be everyones dream, but i've always wanted a 253 in an LJ. A combo i've always loved.
once drove a LJ with a 350 in it , wasn't really worked hard but I have never been in anything quicker since ( and it didn't stop either...)
I don't think this is a Holden 253 anymore
Back in the 80,s Revs Auto produced a 308 that pumped 600hp . Not blown or turbo . It lasted 9 hrs . Split the block clean in 1/2 .
A girdle may have prevented that. The 5.0 Windsors are the same. With a girdle they have a chance.

Watts the cam spek. Crane 280f soild or bigger. Rev like crazy to make the hp .like to see it bottles feed dyno pull
With this set up
awesome power from a 253 block but it is a 292 ci dash 3 heads methanol so not surprising lots of money spent I have made 440 hp 308 red heads on petrol but awesome power from a 253 block I must say

Is it the high compression model?
Formula 5000 intake manifold?
What transmission is behind it
Now I would like to know where / who the manufacturer is of this engine is.
Eli 5.0 top end intake equipment with 120mm throttle body would be ideal would be happy with 300killerwatts 😀⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
And I’m just learning about this now, not heppy.

It's mechanical methanol injection. No electronics. Constant feed, mechanical pump with a set jet and a throttle valve to control flow
i don't believe the hp figures - try y pipes are 60 hp down on 4 into 1's
They are also 45 HP up under 5000 revs !
And I thought the 253 was only good for a boat anchor......
Never liked the stock 253 reckon the Hemi 265 was much better except for its exhaust sound.
Just put a Barra in it.
The Barra is the new Chuck Norris for trolling, but definitely this guy polished a turd which is awesome but what an expensive smoke machine :) Lucky Holden casted engines badly and wastefully thick.
