I know the dogs that died on the serum relay are forgotten now. But they were mourned by their drivers and those who knew them and were thankful for what they did.
@Molly McConnell There's a lot of confusion surrounding Togo's birth date. His mother, Molly, did not arrive in Alaska until March, 1913 and was acquired by Victor Anderson sometime during the winter of 1913/14. She produced her first litter of six puppies for him. Togo was her second litter and was most likely born in 1916, making him nine when he ran the serum run. Also, Seppala took five lead dogs on the serum run - Togo, Billiken, Fritz, Pete, and Young Scotty. Young Scotty and Billiken were in lead when Seppala returned to Nome at the end of the serum run.
@Molly McConnell Yes, nine was old for a husky, especially in that era. Going southeast across Norton Sound, Togo and Young Scotty were in lead. After they got the serum, they turned around and headed northwest back across the sound. Seppala turned Togo loose to run as a loose leader across that section because it was dark and he trusted Togo to guide them around open water. They reached Isacc's Point without incident. The best book that I have found to be factual and not hyped up is by Pam & Bob Thomas - Leonhard Seppala: The Siberian Dog and The Golden Age of Sleddog Racing.
Togo and another lead dog by the name of Fritz, were both stuffed as well as Balto. As a beloved brother or dad to the dogs in my life since a little boy. No, you don't stuff a dog anymore than you'd stuff your parents or any other significant other.
There actually is one of Togo, I forgot where but if you look it up you'll see it. It's just not as well known as Balto's. :/ And I think Balto has more than one statue. Balto was a hero, but Togo did most of the work. I feel bad for Togo in that sense, he deserves some credit too. Still, I love Balto, it will forever be one of my favorite childhood cartoons.
Togo was forgotten in the story of Nome Trail. Balto when down to the history as the hero dog but time put things in the right place, Togo a 12 years old dog did the impossible, he did the must danger part of the trail with a record of miles and time. again 12 year old dog. the only movie where i cried for most of the times watching movie.what an inspirational movie, always loved dogs and this made me to do even more.huge respect togo, balto and the team.we will always remember u,rip,
We'll be covering this incredible event in my class this week. I'll be certain to give TOGO his rightful due as well as BALTO. I wonder if placing their statues near each other has ever been considered. Amazing dogs plus dedicated humans created a miracle. HEALTH & HAPPINESS TO ALL.
Disney Togo brought me here. I cant believe there was another dog who didnt get recognized. I just now know about Togo. Every dog did great but for Togo and his team to run 300 miles is amazing. I'm just glad he is getting recognition now.
Dog are gifts for human, I love both Togo and Balto, one a seasoned veteran and one a rookie both doing their duty admirably despite their circumstances, and neither will succeed without the entire team of the sled runners.
when most huskies' life expectancy is 14yrs....the fact that Togo at 12yrs old made this run much less led it, is beyond incedible. and lived a happy few more years!
I don’t think Balto should have been put down the way the film made it. He did push through a storm and kept it while the fact he had never led before. But Togo for sure was the real hero, no doubt about that.
Togo actually got a lot of recognition when Seppala took him along with several other dogs on tour across the lower 48 in 1926, the year after the serum relay. But over time he was overshadowed by Balto.
After watching the film Togo by Disney i became very sad, such a shame that this friendly and strong dog did not get the credits he earned for his work he did. I've read many many story;s about TOGO and i couldn't keep my eyes dry, tears ran over my face when i read about this amazing dog, super dog i need to say.I myself have a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever witch now is almost 17 years my BEST friend, he's blind and almost deff of age but he is still the best thing that has ever come over me.Balto and the other dogs did good work, but what TOGO did was outstanding and not from this world.TOGO must get a stature in NOME Alaska, i can't believe why he till this day not have that stature!!!Alaska has the obligation the make sure of that.Greeting from the Netherlands to all you TOGO admires.Peter
TOGO AND BALTO ARE LEGEND.. extra ordinary human being and animal.. who could travel within -50 degree for hundreds of miles.. any ordinary man would die on that trail..
I remember when I was younger our teacher read us a book named Togo, it had told us about how Togo basically was the real hero. And at the end of the book it had said that Togo never ran again. It's just kinda sad. It really just shows how some people never get a happy ending.
In the early 1970s, I lived in Alaska. I was also a Girl Scout. There was ( don't know if it's still there or if it's been renamed) a camp called TOGOWOODS. I don't remember the location or how to get there. But, TOGOWOODS, had a special Memorial for him , the other dogs and Mushers. And the sacrifice they made to rescue NOME.
This makes me love my husky more. Lead dog or not, I love my husky so much. ❤️❤️❤️ I'm so proud of their breed. All those hero dogs deserve an honor. They're all heroes. ❤️❤️❤️
I donno why im in tears with this story, this is the most most heroic story i ever heard involving dogs , forever in our hearts these dogs and musher! Those 5 dogs who died with bursted lungs due to severe exhaustion 💔💔💔
Seppala’s mother was Norwegian and father born in Sweden of Finnish descent. Seppala (originally Seppälä) is a Finnish name. Togo and his fellow dogs are incredible heroes. This story makes me cry every time.
For me, all of them were heroes. The main point of this story, is not who ran the longest, or shortest distance. But the fact of the mission completed and many children were saved. Besides, in Balto's statue it says that it's dedicated to all the teams.
I luv the 3 balto movies! I'm waiting for a 4th! Hopefully.... I luv balto and all but I did research! Balto finished the last 55 miles while Togo led the First 265 miles, Balto kinda stole Togo's fame, even know he saved the dogs and a the sled guy from a frozen river where they would've died! Balto did get the medicine back after Togo made a record! Btw In The 1st Balto Steele is Togo but a bad version, bc Steele runs to the medicine and gets half back, just like Togo did! Then Balto took over in the movie and in real life! And in the movie Balto got all the fame, just like real life! CONGRATS TO THEM BOTH! I LUV DOGS/WOLVES! There my fav animals!
50 degrees below zero!!! 500 miles!!! All these brave mushers and sled dogs were heroes who saved the town of Nome and it's estimated at least 10 000 people from the deadly Diphtheria outbreak. Just incredible.
Togo & his pack run nearly 300 miles , what amaze me is Togo age was 12 at that time , without togo , balto would be unknown & Fox didn't even got recognition ..Togo was a real hero.
Togo led his team 261 miles over the most difficult terrain at 12 years of age. Balto led his team over the final 55 miles. All the Sled Dog team Huskies were Heroes. But Togo and his team were exceptional Heroes!
True heroism, strength and courage. I believe that the men that ran this race are truly not like the rest of us. They are braver and more determined than we will ever know, risking their lives to save an entire town.
I respect all dogs to risks there lives not just togo and balto since leadership and follwership ship is a teamwork.❤ May Godbless them and I'm sure they are now with the Father and our Savior 😇❤️🤲
Every single dog and musher deserve all praise and honor because of what they did. Every ounce of sacrifice was needed to complete the run. But if it was to be decided who deserve praise the most, it would be Togo and Seppala. It was their courage and bravery that made then cross Norton Sound and save 2 days on the trail, one getting the serum and one getting back.
This short clip covers the epic story of the 1925 serum run to Nome almost perfectly, the only thing it left out is the second lead dog that ran alongside Balto - Fox.
Love balto too because all dogs are equally awesome and heroic. But balto did 55miles while Togo did 264 miles. Togo didn't get enough recognition he deserved
it's the teamwork of all the mushers that get involved to the vaccine's relay. It was not materialized without the contrinution of each team & their dogs, hope they can make a way to get the names of all the mushers & their dogs to be honored by today's generation. without them Diptheria would not be controlled & some of the kids on those generation that survived were an ancestors of today's generation. If their ancestors did not survived they are not here today.
So it's true Balto was never meant to be a hero it was Togo at first I thought everybody was talking about the movie Balto the cartoon one but I never thought that there be a real life dog in the name of Balto Togo should be the one in the Statue not Balto. I honor the dog Togo for being a hero for saving those people who are very sick 🙏
Something that is rarely seen today, humans caring for there fellow humans to go to this extent risking their lives and pups to save one another one of God's commandments spoken and written several thousand years ago " you must love your fellow man as yourself " Leviticus 19:18.
RIP Balto, Togo, and all the other Dogs and Mushers who took part in this relay. May their courage and determination never be forgotten!
rest in peace Balto and Togo you are heros
Togo needs a statue!

togo has a statue, its at the same park that they put balto statue
That isn't a statue of Balto though, it's just a generic husky to commemorate all the dogs
Everyone says Balto took Togo’s fame but what about the dogs who died along the way? They don’t get recognition.
All of these heroic dogs deserve the recognition for taking on one of nature's unforgiving conditions
I know the dogs that died on the serum relay are forgotten now. But they were mourned by their drivers and those who knew them and were thankful for what they did.
