    Thanks for the informative video without a lot of unnecessary information! You mentioned one thing that the other videos did not, and that was to tell us to do the "tapping" with the open flowers. It makes sense of course but anything new always creates questions and you covered everything.

      I want to add compliments to your garden. Busy, lots to eat. I used a paintbrush. We shall see. Somehow three tomato bushes survived a record hot and dry Houston summer. While they flowered all summer, no fruit was set. Now it has finally cooled, again, and I want to get the most out of these mild autumn weeks thru most of what's left of 23. Usually no freeze til jan-feb. Eggplant germinating super . 12 lovely fruit on one bush. Come on down the weather is fine.🌱

      I live in a condominium complex and have a small patio where I've been growing tomatoes for 3 years. I've only had five tomatoes over the past 3 years on about 3 or 4 plants and I pollinated my tomatoes with Q-tips ... it was ineffective. I have two new blooms inthe vine which are open and I've used the tapping technique! It is so early in the Spring season that I should be able to get more Tomatoes Now by effectively pollinating the blooms!

      Beans are self pollinating. They are already pollinated before the flowers even open so don't waste your time. That's why you can grow lots of different types of beans next to each other and there will be no cross pollination

    • @SomeRoomtoGrow
      @SomeRoomtoGrow  2 роки тому +1

      You’re welcome! Yes, the flowers can often dry up and fall off for a number of reasons. I see it most often when the temperature gets above 95F (35C). It’s important to keep the plants well-watered when it’s that hot. Once the flower bud falls off, a tomato will not grow there. If you live in a very hot area, you should consider using a shade cloth over the plants.

    per the way you described how the flower gets pollinated (I think), would it be best to tap the flower while it is facing straight up towards the sky so the pollen will fall down into where it needs to go? Or, do I have that backwards?

    • @SomeRoomtoGrow
      @SomeRoomtoGrow  5 місяців тому

      That’s a good question, but it’s not necessary to do that. Gravity isn’t really a factor on this scale. Just shaking the flower in some way can get enough pollen to reach the stigma from any angle.

    I am having trouble getting my eggplants to set frui since they are under row covers for flea beetles. If I uncover them for the bees, they will be attacked by flea beetles, so far haven’t been successful with the paintbrush.

    • @SomeRoomtoGrow
      @SomeRoomtoGrow  3 роки тому

      That’s a conundrum! I hope you get some soon. For some reason our eggplants haven’t grown much since I transplanted them. Perhaps we have flea beetles, too!

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead 3 роки тому +1

      @@SomeRoomtoGrow you will know if you have flea beetles. The leaves become lacework. Diatomaceous earth seems to control them a bit, but must be applied regularly and will also kill pollinators if they get in contact with them. Beneficial nematodes also kill the larva, but I’m afraid they also could destroy ground beetles and other beneficial beetles, so it’s a catch 22. Always prefer to err on the side of less intervention, but so far it has been difficult. Having them grow in a high container also dissuades their presence. I’m working on a video for 2 years testing approaches, but so far it has been tricky. Putting them under row covers protects them until ants bring in aphids, without ladybugs to get to them. I’m using diatomaceous earth to control the ants and aphids inside of the covers, but I can’t allow bees in otherwise they could die. I’m trying to pollinate by hand, but perhaps the temperature inside the row cover gets too hot and causes flower drop.

    • @SomeRoomtoGrow
      @SomeRoomtoGrow  3 роки тому

      They do have a lot of insect damage on the leaves. I’ll have to inspect them more closely. Those row covers can trap a lot of heat, I really had a problem with that in the early Spring. Thanks for the advice!
