How do I practice as a physio in the U.K. if I completed my degree abroad? | HCPC Application

- Hey guys in today’s video I’m going to be breaking down how you can practice as a physiotherapist in the U.K. if you’ve qualified abroad.
Before I begin I just want to say this if any of the information that is mentioned today is unclear, I have left two key links to helpful information published by the CSP which will guide and answer any further questions you may have.
LINKS:
CSP website article for physios looking to practice in the U.K. requirements: www.csp.org.uk...
Full PDF Document of the requirements: www.dropbox.co...
Now to practice in the U.K. as an international physio there are 3 very important things you need to do.
1. Register with the HCPC who are the regulatory body for all health professionals in the U.K. and they grant you the power to call yourself a physiotherapist’ ‘physical therapist’ in the U.K. it is actually illegal to practice without this.
2. Be able to demonstrate your ability to speak and understand English usually via a test. IELTS or another language exam.
3. To have a visa to enter and work in the UK if you are not a British citizen or a national of an EEA country.
Other important things you could do:
Become a full CSP (chartered society of physiotherapy) member. This is the society/union for all physiotherapists in the U.K. A couple of benefits include free advice and guidance, a backlog of clinical evidence papers to review on their website and professional insurance.
To help increase the likelihood of your application being approved by the HCPC you should be able to have evidence of your proficiency as a physiotherapist.
This could be information on:
Where you have worked - settings (hospital, clinic etc.) types of patients treated and type of services provided.
Types of assessments, treatments and evaluation methods used.
Information about you how stay organised at work.
Any reflections on your practice - personal accounts.
Any Grade results/actual examples of your assessments at college/university in the three main areas (neurology, respiratory and musculoskeletal).
Example of using clinical evidence in your practice - initial assessment and treatment.
There are various ways in which the above may be addressed. The easiest way is by providing curricula/course information.
Another method is by providing references from supervisors, even if these are relating solely to placements while studying.
Statements or case studies from applicants referencing the above could also be included in the submission.
Lastly
You will also need to have a visa to be able to work in the U.K. I believe the Tier 2 VISA is applicable for skilled workers.
Once you have done these then it is time for you to start looking for jobs - I will make a separate video for this.
Hope this was useful to you, like comment and subscribe and I’ll see you in the next one!

Can you apply for registration while you still live abroad? I’ll be moving to the UK in a few months but wanted to get the application for registration in prior to moving there. Do you need a UK address for the HCPC application?
This vedio was really very informative
I have few queries to ask
I am physiotherapist from India. So could i apply for this? You have mentioned about the language exam I just came across this vedio and the exam had happened before this so what's next? Do i need a specialization in a field before applying? Do they heir freshers?
Keenly waiting for your response
Hi. Thanks for this video. I live in US . I m homemaker. I am soon going to shift to London. And I want to do job as physiotherapist. For that, which license exam do I have to study n pass? Is it Npte exam?
Hey, I’m coming for MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine January intake. As a physiotherapist graduate if I register myself in HCPC(through all the process) am i be able to do part time job as a physiotherapist over there while studying! This would be helpful if you answer this sir! Waiting for you valuable response.
Hey Utkarsh, yes you should be able to. Part time physio roles are few and far between but as long as you’re registered I’m confident you’ll be able to find a suitable role alongside your studies
Isn't there any licencing exam for it that we need to clear like NPTE or PCE?
Many Thanks for such a informative video... 👌👏
Is there any particular criteria or format for making the portfolio?
Hi , usually it consists of previous evidence base critiques, CPD - any certificates or qualifications, references from your seniors, reflections/case studies of patients you have seen etc.
Hi masuad ..em from pakistan and freshly gruadeted ...i want to move to UK ....if i want to work as physiotherapist what steps i should take hope you guide me...?

Hi brother, Still PT is not in shortage occupational list!! Will they publish revised list this year?Any information regarding it?
Love this video.
If i study Msc from UK then what? I still have to clear the physiotherapy council test?
Hi Sir! I have query that I have done Doctor of Physical Therapy (Dpt) degree from Pakistan, so am I eligible to work as physiotherapist in Uk?
Hey Masud,
I hope you are doing well.
I'll be always thankful to you if you can guide me through this.
I'm still confused about which English language test I should give. IELTS OR OET????
Your response will be highly appreciated.
Thankyou :)
Hey Charusmita, I believe it is IELTS 😊
@@masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689 Thanks 😊
Any assessment test??
What is the minimum ielts score to register in hcpc ??
Can we work as a physiotherapist if our hcpc license is in process?
Hi 👋, not as physiotherapist but as physio assistant whilst waiting for your registration.
Physiotherapist is a band 5 in the NHS whilst physio assistant is band 4.
Hey masud. Plz tell me what's the criteria to work in UK after getting degree in dpt from Pakistan. Is there any test like plab after mbbs ??? Plz rply me
Hi Saira, I’m not sure unfortunately. You should try to contact the HCPC. Use the links I’ve placed in the description for more info 👍🏼
No there is not any exam .u just have to get registered with hcpc
Hi Saira, can you please share any information that you may have found as I am currently in the same position. Thanks
After registered in HCPC (physiotherapy), how will i get job from india ?
Also, which english eligibility exam we should give?
IELTS or OET?
Hi masud,
I am a physical therapy graduate currently working in Nepal. I wanted to know about HCPC registration and your video helped me a lot. But I wanted to know if I can apply for registration when I'm still in Nepal.
That should be ok Bisudha
work experience outside uk for international appliers is important to get registered in HCPC?
Yes absolutely. If not you will have to work as a physio assistant in the U.K. when you arrive to complete a statutory number of hours set by the HCPC to get your professional registration. Best thing to do is read their website and get in touch with them.
Hi brother, I have 15+ yes experience as PT, so my initial posting will be in band 4 or band 5?

Hi I wanted to ask about healthcare professionals, specifically physiotherapists in UK, are you allowed to have like a visible tattoo? I have been curious about that one. Thanks
Hi there, as long as you cover it up during initial interviews and application then I don’t think it matters. I think it’s a case of employer by employer basis - most people don’t mind it.. I’ve seen loads of healthcare assistants with tattoos and there’s been no issue - as long as you’re upfront about it - shouldn’t be a problem - the trust may have their own policy
hi i m a dpt grad from pak wantwd to study msc in cardiovascular rehabilitation from uni of hull, would it be a good career choice for me as i will be seeking to secure a job in uk after my masters.
Hi Zain, it would be a great career choice 👍🏼
Assalamu alaykum, please can I write the evidence of proficiency myself or I should inform my supervisor to write it?
Secondly is it easy to get job after registration with HCPC?
Walkum salaam, I think it would be best to ask your supervisor or you could write it and get their approval with their signature.
It is fairly easy to get job provided you have the experience and the right qualifications.
In your opinion or experience, it's possible and feasible for a new-gradueted italian physio to apply for a MSc course and, at the same time, working in the NHS in clinical rotations?
Depends which Msc Course ? ( a top up msc or a pre reg msc )
@@masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689 if I already have a BSc in physiotherapy (italian degree, which is recognised in uk), I guess a top up (like advanced cardiorespiratory or msk/manual therapy)...am I right?
ps: correct me if my english is wrong
Yea you are absolutely correct. In that case I would say yes you could do the top up msc course and work in clinical rotations. Apologies for late reply Davide - thought I already did!
@@masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689 Thanks for your time =)
Hey... I want to know if someone got married to a British citizen... Because ielts requirement is for overseas m. But If I m not wrong people coming on spouse visa have same rights as the British people have .. Still they have to take ielts exam for hcpc registration?
Good question Maham, that’s very interesting. I think it would be worth emailing the HCPC.
Their email is: registration@hcpc-uk.org
did you email them? what was their reply?
Yeah... It's necessary to fulfill ielts requirement
@@mahamshahbaz4545 hello ma'am, I am also facing a similar situation, so if you could tell me whether to register before marriage or afterwards????
Hi..bro i am sohaib from Pakistan..i hsve done dpt..i am coming to uk in 2021..please tell me which master course is best for physio..MSC ADVANCING PHYSIOTHERAPY OR sport exercise physiology..please
Hi Sohaib, what is the reason for wanting to study a masters?
@@masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689 sir i have completed physiotherapy 5 years degree DPT now i want to study master in uk..Now i am confused that Msc Advance physiotherapy is better for me or sport physiotherapy..i don't know what is advanced physiotherapy master..please if you know than tell me
I understand Sohaib. I think it comes down to what route you want to go down.. from my understanding advanced professional practice will allow you to further develop your clinical skills with an aim of getting a higher banding at a hospital for example
Band 6 and band 7 (more qualified physios)
Or if you wanted to go into academic teaching other students then that would be good.
Or just building on your current knowledge and skills it is a good course generally as it’s broad and you can select the area of physio you want to specialise in like MsK neuro or cardioresp for example amongst others.
The sport msc sounds more suited towards if you wanted to go down that route and join a sporting club after and work with athletes.
I think the university offering these courses would be the best people to speak to/contact.
Have you spoken with anyone from any university yet?
Have you read about the course on university websites?
Once you do those things I’m sure you will have a better understanding of what you want to do Sohaib.
Hope that helps you.
@@masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689 thank sir..yes sir i have applied to msc advancing physiotherapy in Salford university Manchester jan intake they accept my admission..and sports msc i have applied to solent university Southampton and still waiting for their decision..thats why i don't know which is better course for me..
Sir sport physiotherapy is in higher demand in uk or advanced physiotherapy high demand..any idea
Hey Masud, being a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in India is it better to work part time as a Physiotherapist or an Assistant physical therapist in UK while studying for MSc there? What would be easier? And what could be the difference in pay scale?
Hey Simran, personally I’d say part time physio would be ideal but part time physio opportunities are hard to come by. If you can manage to find a place looking to employ you on a part time basis then by all means go for it.
And part time physio assistant is also fine as well alongside studying. Most people would want a break away from their topic of study but if this suits you then that’s fine
Pay scale - physiotherapists would usually get more but not by a a lot
@@masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689 Thankyouu so much😊👍
Hey simran , are u in uk now ?
Hi,also please give me advice to choose a best MSc course in UK?could you please make a video about the courses that are highly in demand? furthermore after completing Pg,do physiotherapist can change their career to a short list profession?I'm confused, please reply.
Hi JM, I will keep this in mind. What do you mean ‘shortlist’ profession?
@@masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689 In UK, certain profession comes under Shortage occupation list. For that profession,it's easy to apply for job .Thats y asking .Also if I'm doing a course in UK,can I directly apply for hcpc after completing that course?
What is meant by pre registration msc in physiotherapy???
That means you are not yet registered with the HCPC as a qualified physiotherapist.
So that course is designed for people who want to become physiotherapists but are not yet registered with the HCPC.
The HCPC is the health professions council.
@@masudsaeediphysiotherapy8689 can a bachelor in physiotherapy apply for msc pre registration ? Or will it be waste of time amd should opt for advancing physiotherapy course ?
Do we need to register with hcpc for furthers studies also after completing dpt 5 years from foreign country??

Hai Masud presently am working in nursing home as a physiothery assistant in Singapore from 2yrs. Is this considered as experience and if I want to work in Uk can we come through OET exam or it must b only IELTS.
Hi , you may have to qualify as a physiotherapist first.
But in Singapore very difficult to become physiotherapist for foreigners. so I plan to come uk. I completed my bachelor of physiotherapy in india
I have got 7.5 band in ielts exam. I have bachelor degree in Physiotherapy from India and having 9 years of work experience in private clinic. What should i do first?

Hi Masud! Does it take nearly 8 weeks to get an answer since the time you send the application? Because I have heard about cases in which it takes many months?
Hey Samy, I think it depends on a case by case basis. I can’t really speak for the HCPC myself but I have also experienced a similar thing with people that have gone through the process.
Are you in the middle of applying yourself?
Yes Masud, I just hope it doesn’t take several months to get an answer, since I don't know what it depends on, other than their busy periods. Thank you for your answer!

Hi there, physios are definitely in demand in the U.K. They are highly trained medical professionals. I wouldn’t be able to comment as I studied and got my HCPC in the U.K. , but I am sure it is doable, can’t say how difficult it is unfortunately sorry
Hey Masud, I have a query. If someone completes his/her Postgrad from UK uni. then is it easy to get a job their as a physiotherapist ? and how a physio will get PR in UK ? Kindly guide.
Hey Anam, thank you. Yes in my opinion a U.K. qualified physio will have it a little easier as they would have completed their placements in NHS trusts and have relevant exp within the areas they want to work in. The transition would definitely be easier id say...
Just explain a little more on your 2nd Q as I’m a little confused 😊

Hey Sakshi, thank you for commenting. Before I would be able to advise I’d need to know what kind of msc you completed in the U.K.?
In my honest opinion the HCPC would be the best people to seek advice from as they are the company who is in charge of registering physiotherapists.
Getting a job is quite good chance. Depending on which area of healthcare you’re working in.
In regards to license exam, I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to as I personally don’t have any experience of doing license exams. I completed a bachelors in the U.K.

After registered in HCPC (physiotherapy) how will i get a job from india?? I mean how to find a job from india?
After Registration with HCPC, you can apply online to employers. Once you have successfully passed their interview they will give you a job offer. You can then apply for some sort of work permit to stay in the country that way.
I hope this helps you.
HCPC registration comes first. Then applying for jobs.
