- CWU's Nick Zentner remembers Tom Foster (1959-2020). Part 3 of 3. Tom created 'I-90 Rocks' as a vehicle to bring geology to the masses. The series was to begin in Seattle and finish in Spokane...but the Tom-Nick team only made it to Snoqualmie Pass. This video showcases the finished episodes...and also includes snippets from unfinished episodes in eastern Washington. 82 minutes.

I am happy to see some of the behind the scenes stuff from you and Mr Foster's work, and very happy to see some of the unaired content from the episodes of 'I-90 Rocks' that did not make it to a published state. I was wondering what else might have been in the pipe that had not made it out, and thanks to these archives, we finally get to see it.

Boy, Tom was a tough director. No wonder the final outcome was so great.
The series needs to be completed. Where do we send the money? We know it won't be the same, but the rocks are still there and there's no better way to explain them.
I agree, the series should be finished. Some form of crowd funding, perhaps, although as a senior citizen I have no idea how that works. That and saving / maintaining Mr. Foster's web site.
So sorry that Tom didn't get to finish these video series. His photography was awesome. Thanks for sharing what you two loved doing.

I've been watching your videos all during the epidemic social distancing suggestions and want to thank you. I found them fascinating and just ordered a book on Oregon roads geology because of the curiosity you helped generate. Thanks for your contribution to my continuing education.
I’ve watched hours and hours of Nick and Tom’s work in the field but somehow missed large parts of this Part 3 tribute. Do I understand correctly that some of this material is being shown for the first time? These guys collaborated for years and assembled a tour de force illuminating an ongoing geologic freak show in the Pacific Northwest.
The kicker: A year ago I didn’t know squat about geology and couldn’t have cared less. In January 2021, my 2002 Jeep Wrangler is currently being overhauled. This April I will be making an 18 day road trip to Washington and Oregon to see the magic of the geology Nick and Tom shared with all of us. At the age of 71, I consider this trip a bucket list homage to two inspired educators who opened a whole new compartment in my life. Blessum both!

We learn a lot about you, Nick, from this series. What a performer! It must be fun to be one of your students. I do wish I could attend your class [or could have when I was young about 60 years ago]. You really need(ed) someone like Tom for your "Nick From Home" series. You have such a story to tell and do it so well when you have expert help.

Amazing how, through UA-cam, Tom and you have become part of my life. This is a perfect tribute. Been a few years but you and Tom both had an impact greater than you may know. This is wonderful. He is missed. Qincy Basin intro is a hoot by the way. So you and Tom.
Fine actor and tough director. You are so calm when he wants another were you afraid of loosing your job? It's clear what a special man he was . Skilled with the best of photographers. I understand how the death of a close friend and work friend leaves a hole in one's heart. Such memories carry us on thru the sad moments. Thank you, for doing these. My favorite of favorites was the Mt. Mazama Ash. Did you just say, "Earthquakes in Eastern Washington"!?

tom seemed to be really passionate about this, and anyone who watches this channel can certainly appreciate that sentiment. we're all better off having had him working to get this material out to the world. again, i am very sorry for your loss nick.
A certain Charles Darwin went up to Glen Roy to do field work and came up with an answer that was totally wrong. Gives hope to all of us.

I found your channel recently and watch your stuff in whatever random order UA-cam gives it to me. So, with this video showing up in my feed today, I finally found out why I-90 Rocks stopped at 3 episodes. Too bad you couldn’t have figured out how to continue the series. Sorry to hear about Tom. I also insist on staying behind the camera so I appreciate that he was that kind of guy.
It breaks my heart that Tom Foster wasn't able to finish this series. It is now my dream that Nick can find a way to continue the series. I'm 75 and hope to see the series finished. Kittitas country, upper and lower, are my favorite parts of the state. My life has revolved around this county. As a teenager, my parents bought weekend property near Cle Elum. They eventually retired in that town. I went to college and graduate school at CWU. I've since lived in the Wenatchee Valley and played in Kittitas County and also th North Cascades. The next couple of episodes would be the most important to me to learn. These episodes are the best part of Washington geology to me. So everyone and Nick now know my biggest dream for the rest of my life.

Dear Nick, if you ever run out of ideas (unlikely), you could make an episode about the Carpathians (in a new series called "Around the World with N. Z."? ;-) ). For one, it has a strange shape. Then, there must be several stories to tell: a tectonic story, old volcanoes, a prehistoric sea to get filled in, the ice age story... we must have had even some lava flows, because we have some of the basalt columns too...
I was just wondering about the small pebble and sand mining operation near where I live in the basin, how did those sands and pebbles get down there several hundreds of meters deep, from where they are elevating them now, from the bottom of an artificial lake. They must have come from the mountains via fast rivers, when the basin was deep and not filled in yet...
I'd also be interested in the story of the Scandinavian mountains, they just caught my eyes in the tectonic movement animations, how old they must be, and how well they kept their general shape of the peninsula.
I live in WV and the mountains here are...big, I guess. Just some pretty hills mostly. I'm used to the scale of everything here. I cannot for the life of me imagine how huge all the flood features are. Tom's photos and videos help tremendously. Thank you both.
I grew up until I was 13 in VA. We traveled a lot through WV to visit family in the midwest. I finished growing up in Washington state. So I remember your beautiful mountains that are small compared to the mountains in Washington state and and the Rockies. WV and VA are both beautiful and have wonderful mountains. Just a different kind of much older mountains.
