Citroen C5 Aircross (2019) Review: Better for being different

  • The Citroen C5 Aircross is rare for being a family SUV with three full-size rear seats, which combined with a large boot makes it an extremely practical vehicle. Throw in the use of Citroen's Advanced Comfort Programme to improve ride comfort and refinement, and you have a car that really should stand out from the crowd. But is it actually any good? Chris Knapman sets out to answer precisely that question in this CarGurus UK review.
    Written review:

    Pros
Bold styling makes rivals look dull
    Very roomy for five
Useful electric range of plug-in hybrid
    Cons
    Touchscreen is fiddly
    No 4x4 version
Short new car warranty compared with some rivals
    The CarGurus verdict
With its bold styling, a fine ride and a cool interior with those three individual rear seats, the C5 Aircross does enough to stand out in a very crowded part of the market. It's impressively spacious and practical, distinctive (although certainly not sporty) to drive, and good value, too. If you can live with an infotainment system that lags behind the class best, and don’t mind the shorter warranty compared with some of its rivals, it’s well worth considering.

Those independent back seats are brilliant. I wish other brands had similar configuration, at least as an option.

I think the styling will polarise opinion. Personally I like it. I had a close look at one which was on display at a local shopping complex a few months ago. It was a good size and and seemed well equipped.

Never liked the look of citroens of old, but i must say seeing this c5 aircross has changed my mind, looks lovely in the flair plus trim, nice an big an roomy too an looks comfortable,at the moment i have a jeep renegade limited diesel which ive had 4 months but after 4 years time after my hp finance is nearly finished i am wanting to get one of these in flair plus trim and hopefully automatic , i like auto or manual but for this car I think automatic would make it feel that bit more special, great review cheers 👌👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I have had this car since May and this is a fair review. I have the volcano red mid-range model in manual.
With the 1.2 petrol engine the fuel economy is extremely good even when when the boot is fully loaded.
As he stated the on board GUI is pretty standard across the line but a pet peeve would be when toggling "AC Max" it resets your previous configuration which when driving is a distraction to put it back.

Been using the car for 2 years now. Things that is annoying.
    - the Autopark is unstable and will often leave the parking to you as it gives up. For an example Ford is much further ahead on that functionality.
    - the autopilot is in some occasions not trustworthy. Not registering the car in front of you and if you are unaware, you will plunge into the car in gront lf you.
    - Autostart and autostop, only works properly the first 3-4 years or until you exchange the battery.
    - the inscreen software has a lot of flaws and in some occasions, screens clutters and/or goes black.
    - the wireless charger often doesnt work. No matter brand and model of the phone.
    - the automatic gear shifts do feel hard, and makes driving the car feel weird and stiff at times as shifting gears feels hard
    - too weird seatbelt distribution in the rear seats

We bought one, the 178hp petrol model, on the basis of a similar review elsewhere on youtube. Within a week I bitterly regretted it. Once stuck into the nitty gritty of the school run and the motorway blast down to Spain it became apparent its underpowered and the steering is sloppy with zero feedback. The comfortable seats and quiet interior did not make up for the fair ground ride dodgem car steering, which felt particularly lethal at high speed and the way I had to rev the guts out of it with four adults on board and a pile of luggage, when trying to overtake a line of trucks on an uphill stretch of French motorway.
After a month I gave it back. If citroen could create a 'GT' version - tighten up the steering and put their famous 2.5 V6 petrol engine in it and give it 'proper' four wheel drive they'll have something approaching X5 territory and for a specific demographic like me, they would sell them like hot cakes. But as it stands, its a crap dull car hiding behind a stylish exterior.
