  • It’s a lot more than just Retsina. ERRATUM: The aging requirements I gave for the Reserve and Grande Reserve designations are incorrect. The correct requirements are: Reserve - 1 year for whites and 2 for reds, Grande Reserve - 2 years for whites and 4 for reds. Thanks to Jean Emmanuel Draillard for calling this to my attention and to Tristan Garthe for finding official documentation of this standard. Check out the pinned conversation thread for this video for more details on the aging requirements and for a look at our process. Thanks again guys!

Hey mate, Thanks again for your casts, doing the certified CMS in April and I can't look at 1 country/region without watching one of your casts! They are awesome and most importantly... SIMPLE !
I just have a quick one, for the PDO aging requirements I've found from 2 serious sources that Reserve is 1y for W and 2y for R and Gde Reserve 2y for W and 4y for R. Could you confirm?
Anyway, thanks for making the wine world understandable for little people like me ! Can't wait for the next one !

Hello and thanks for the message. The source that I followed when putting together the cast was this PDF:
      www.tiwc.gr/backend/images/winesofnorthgreece/downloads/The_Greek_Wine_Guide.pdf
and on page 11 it gives the aging minimums that I listed Reserve: 2y for White/3y for Red and Grande Reserve: 3y for White and 4y for Red. I assumed that this was a reliable source, but since I've been checking after reading your comment, I've seen some sources that give the minimums that you do. So, what I should do next is see if I can find an official website or source that will give me a definitive answer. I'm juggling a few things right now, but I'll get on it and then post a correction in the video information if I find my numbers are incorrect. Can you tell me what your sources are so I can have a look at them. Thanks in advance and thanks for taking the time to write in. I really want to make sure that the information I put out there is accurate and messages like yours really help. Cheers!

Hey mate, my sources are the "Sales and Service for the wine professional" book by Brian K.Julyan (the book they give you when you study for the court of master sommeliers certified exam), Guild Sommelier (online Sommeliers website) and this page : greekwinefederation.gr/en/content/show/&tid=35 with this : "Appellation of Origin wines are legally listed under the indications Reserve and Grande Reserve. The indication Reserve refers to white wines aging for 1 year and red wines aging for 2. Correspondingly, the wines called Grande Reserve refer to white wines aging for 2 years (1 of which in barrels and 6 months in bottles) and the red wines aging for 4 years (18 months of which in barrels and 18 months in bottles)"

OK, so after doing some more research I've found different sources with different minimums (so far three different sets, total). The source you gave me from the Greek Wine Federation seems like the most "official" one, but I can't tell if they're an actual government body or just an advocacy group. I prefer a government source to settle controversies like this, so I've posted a "controversy alert" in the description of the video, and I'll pin this conversation thread so that interested viewers can have a look a make their best judgement. I've asked viewers to send any links to government sources if they know them, because I'd like to settle this, too. Meanwhile, thanks for the comment that got all of this rolling. I always learn something when I research this stuff. Cheers!

      Hi all,
I'm just using Rhodes PDO as an example, here is the info from Guildsomm:
      Aging Requirements:
Επιλεγμένος ("Selected") or Réserve: These terms are only allowed for dry wines, and are interchangeable. Selected/Réserve wines must age for a minimum 1 year, including at least 6 months in oak barrels and 3 months in bottle for white. For red the minimum time is 2 years with a minimum 12 months in barrel and 6 months in bottle.
Ειδικά Επιλεγμένος ("Specially Selected") or Grande Réserve: Also interchangeable and authorized only for dry wines, these terms require at least 2 years of aging, including a minimum 1 year in oak barrels and 6 months in bottle. For red the minimum time is 4 years with a minimum 18 months in barrel and 18 months in bottle.

That source settles it! I've changed the "controversy alert" to an "erratum" and supplied the correct information. A big thanks to you and Jean Emmanuel for clearing this up. Cheers!

Great cast! Big fan of your work. A Greek grape and wine worth discovering is the Malagousia from Ktima Gerovassilliou. It has a great story behind as well.

Thank you for this! Subscribed and looking forward to more.
Regarding Greek wine, there is also a lot outside of the Appellation system. Savatiano is the most planted grape of Greece, and has no PDO appellation around it.
The rebirth of high quality Retsina is also interesting. A wine that goes back to Ancient Greek practices, if made naturally (some great examples of new orange retsinas with no sulfites) it can be a revelation.

Another fantastic themed video! For some reason I've been drinking way more greek wines this year than ever. Santorini is kind of my go to area, but always up for something new. Definitely up to watch a future cast on Retsina! Cheers from Norway!!

+Underneath the Bottle. Thanks! I love Santorinis, but I've been drinking a lot of Nemean Agiorgitikos and they've been fantastic. I have a complicated relationship with Retsina, but no grape is my enemy and I will do a cast on it one of these days. :-)

Underneath The Bottle : Excellent choice! Try some new and upcoming grapes, like dry Mavrodafni, or Limniona. Also white wines from Crete or natural (orange with no sulfites) retsinas!

LingChen Jin agreed, Vidiano is also a star coming out of Crete, and so many other indigenous Cretan varieties still unexplored.
