What Made The Da Vinci Painting Worth $450 Million (HBO)

  • After nearly 20 minutes of nail-biting bidding on Wednesday night, Leonardo da Vinci’s painting Salvator Mundi, shattered the world record for the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction. Including fees, the 500-year-old rare masterpiece sold for $450.3 million.
    Some questioned the authenticity of the painting as truly Da Vinci but with a price tag that far surpassed initial estimates the concern now seems irrelevant.
    Before the sale, Vice News Tonight went to Christie's for a private viewing of Salvator Mundi with contemporary Brazilian artist Vik Muniz.

      Painting Expert (On Call-Friend of Rick): Seems authentic to me, but unfortunately, it is an imitation made by a Chinese. See this line here, it contradicted Leonardo's paintings, if you see his paintings (which I doubt, sneers). Still... (Look at Rick, then back) the painting has a value. You see, you won't find any kind like this, not anymore.
      Rick: Then how much is it? (Look at him with meaningful gaze)
      Painting Expert (On Call-Friend of Rick): They made 4 of this, so I would say... mmm... around 4 grand.
      Rick: 4 grand? Okay.

Detailing the aspects in Da Vinci's execution of his artistic craft was indeed a masterclass. No high brow critique, but spoken from his heart and pure admiration that broke it down to someone who never had it explained in such a way.

      @angelgjr1999 6 років тому +54

      rurutu M No. Money laundering paintings sell for half to one million dollars. This is way more than anyone could afford. Tax alone would kill motive to launder that much money in one purchase.

    • @zainabe9503
      @zainabe9503 6 років тому +125

      It could be money laundering alright. The way I see it, the purchaser is not foolish enough to waste his huge fortune on a mere painting. It is bought as an "investment", an "asset" to store your wealth into, that you can sell later on at much much higher price. Very much like gold: its practical value is nonexistent, but it is valuable as an asset and investment. And you might ask, what makes a thing so valuable yet so useless? The answer is in human emotion: the thing must be seen as "divine", it is romanticized so highly, venerated like a holy-grail, and it must be so mighty rare. Remember in Napoleon's reign, Aluminum was way more expensive than Gold, because it was a novelty metal back then. If your wealth is stored in paper money, it may devaluate (inflation) in a blink of an eye (remember in Germany post WW1, huge stacks of money were more valuable burned as a heater, than stored as wealth).

    What’s the point of buying an authentic Da Vinci painting representing the FALSE image of Christ. That man that you see in the painting is Cesare Borgia, his father Rodrigo de Borgia also known as Pope Alexander VI decided that the representation of Christ needed a modern day makeover. So he hired Da Vinci to paint multiple paintings of his son Cesare Borgia and send them all across the world. I’m sorry ladies and gentlemen but Da Vinci was a small pawn in a much larger game. Don’t believe me? Look it up and decide for yourselves.

      Da Vinci never worked for pope Alexander the VIth, he worked personally as a war engineer for Cesare Borgia . He was hired by Cesare while Leonardo was still in Florence and he was only commissioned to draw maps and make innovative war machines for Cesare's wars. And the story of the so called fake image of Christ which is in fact the figure of Cesare is a completely nonsense. There are many representations of the Christ before the reign of Pope Alexander in 1492 from the beginning of 14th century or even 13th century. Moreover the western depiction of the Christ in art is originated in the eastern part from the Byzantine empire where the Christ is shown again with long hair and white skin. And i don't say that because i believe that Jesus looked exactly like that , because i don't , but that story with Cesare and the modern representation is so overused by people that it has become annoying . The explanation for the Christ traditional look is that in the beginning of the Middle Ages the wise men and the important people of a community used to have long hair so the first christians could't imagine Jesus in another way than looking like the wise men of their time.

    There is no human figure in any picture by Leonardo in which the head is perfectly aligned with the torso and shoulders. Although I must admit that other features (mainly the style) really look Leonardo's.

    Honestly, it’s a rare of a kind. I think it’s abit absurd, I would have purchase one of Leonardo’s codex instead, but this painting is probably more rare since it’s never been seen in all of the public eye for the past 100th of years. Remember Leonardo was around the late mid 1400s died in early 1500s. All I am saying is that the price is well worth it, but it’s significance compare to other works are not up to par. No doubt this piece have some good technicality to it. In terms of art.

    • @yarazooom

      those CODEX, most were destroyed at time of roman inquistion time...NOT JESUS no halo no angels no crucifix, a self portrait, as artist n scientist. crystal ball a tool used by artists who discovered theory of perspective n theory of optical function in brain. his fingers point to the sky n stars suggesting his, pre-Galileo theory of sun centered universe. not a ''religious man, he invented war machines to use against Vatican Army who invaded his home city Milan

    • @Jasongy827
      @Jasongy827 6 років тому +1

      Before you speak, get your grammar right. I know he produced war machines, he only did it to find work. Remember that Leo bounced around from one patron to the next painting was not a stabilize income. Your theory about this whole crystal ball tool; I honestly, have no idea what you are talking about. Religion has many symbolism and iconography. You know that Leonardo, supported and ushered many of the way how people think, specifically science. I honest, think that Leonardo knew the sun was centered was a inhibit because of the technology at the time. You can say that Copernicus and Kepler helped ushered that thought. It was until the invention of telescope and different type of glass helped people to look beyond the stars. Most of his codex may have been lost as the result of time, invasion etc. Romans was way way before the Italian Renaissance and the dark ages. In the end, you don't know most of the type period, its a mere speculations. I have read many books on Leonardo's life time. I understand that your getting at that Man discovered many of the science today, which is honestly true and was not a divine gift of thought.

  • @cvf628
    @cvf628 5 років тому

    What the painting sold for is its purchase price, not necessarily what it's worth. Most of the time the purchase price and the market value are equivalent, but there are instances when that is not accurate. All of us have seen the last two bidders for a piece competing with each other to the bitter end. You have to look at where most of the bids ranged not necessarily the last offer. You also have to look at Da Vinci's and his contemporaries bodies of work as this sale may be an outlier and not representative of market value.
    The problem with overpaying for art is that it is unlikely to come back onto the market until market prices rise to where this painting is once more worth selling. That could be a very, very long time. Eventually, like all things in life, the painting will come to market either by this buyer or their estate.
    It would have been nice to see the actual painting as it is like a bridge in time between you and the artist but I can live with photos and reproductions.
    To the buyer. Enjoy it with your friends as it is an amazing piece of art. As with all art, no one really owns it, we are just one of many custodians through time.

    November 11, 2021 - The catalogue for a recently opened Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at the Prado Museum in Madrid states this should not be considered a masterpiece solely by the artist. According to an exhibition description, this 'is the result of an ambitious research project which the Prado undertook in parallel and in collaboration with other international institutions, such as the Musée du Louvre, the Molecular Archaeology Laboratory at the Sorbonne and the National Gallery, London'. The exhibition’s accompanying catalogue groups a number of works by Leonardo and his circle into two sections: 'by Leonardo' and 'attributed works, workshop, or authorized and supervised by Leonardo' and puts in the latter category. Oops.

    The painting clearly looks like the work of Leonardo's student, and young lover, Gian Giacomo Caprotti da Oreno, better known as Salaì. Anyone who knows Salai's work, can immediately see his hand here!

      I prefer 450.5 millions spent for a as you called it “a piece of art” than 700 billions for weapons. I mean there is a lot of waste of money out there and surely this is the least stupid one that Im concerned about

    I don't think it looks like one of his work. More like something one of his students painted and he just added touches here and there.

      Exactly. It looks like a work by Boltraffio, ruined by poor restoration.

    Did LdV ever paint a medieval monk ? I have such a painting: the head is well done, but the hand is rather two-dimensional (maybe painted by a student ?)
