Why won't she trust her own voice, style and talent and make an entire blues and jazz album 😩 after years I still come back to this gem! Christina you are flawless
asava17 oh I adore the back to basics album, very jazz and blues influenced, i just meant a bit more of a raw blues and jazz feel album although back to basics was very throwback it still had a pop undertone, I think Christina has the voice to carry over something more raw
I have the answer to that. In short, people are sensitive and will scream cultural appropriation. Why? Because people are crazy. Don't worry, I can support this. Okay, so you know she performed 2 tributes to the late Whitney Houston? The first was scratched because the family felt she sang the songs too well, and it wouldn't be about Whitney. Which prompted the 2nd where she totally changed how she sang her songs. Then trickle on that fact that she is half Latina. Although her first Spanish album did well, she still got slack because she wasn't full Latin. Then, consider this as well. Christina has always been seen as the BAD Britney because of her singing ability and the fact that she basically does what she wants musically opposed to Britney Spears who is the All American safe girl more people relate too. Although both successful, even more celebrities choose Britney because she isn't competition. Whereas Christina allows her music to speak for itself. Lastly, which I'm sure none of you know, Elvis stole the blue and rock and roll from the Black Community and profited off it very well. Now, knowing what I know about Christina Aguilera, she is respectful of those who came before. In my opinion, for her to sing as features for a blues song is one thing, but to do a Blues Album is an entirely different thing to people in the US. She can't even sing a sing at a funeral in Italian honoring Kobe Bryant without someone screaming about it. In closing, I think it best she doesn't because you people have a box you are all in that you force others into and if they don't do what you want, they get canceled. I love her and I really don't want her career to end because a bunch of sensitive Americans don't like that she can sing.
Yeah, an artist of the caliber of Herbie Hancock isn't going to pick just "any" singer. C. Aguilera is one of the greats, and this album absolutely proves it.
I've been a longtime fan of both Herbie Hancock and Christina Aguilera individually, but this cover of this song is so head and shoulders above anybody else that has ever attempted it, that I feel it's an injustice for anyone else to even try! This is one of my all time favorite jazz recordings!
I love her interpretation ... but, people ... Donnie owned it. The spaces between phrases, the whispering of perfectly pitched notes ... timing that paid no attention to tempo ... unparalleled. He sang the song in layers with such subtle touches ... and why would we ever have to discuss that last soft vocal lick at the end. Unfair to compare ... just enjoy ... she a bad young sister ... lets just say ... thank you Herbie. By the way, check out Herbie’s partner in crime, George Benson’s version of “Lady Blue,” ... another Leon Russell masterpiece.
giri sugiyanto who the fuck asked you girl xtina made the song a song again after it been sang not as good she is the best singer seriously I challenge you to do one note right girl
BTW- It was Herbie Hancock who gave Christina Aguilera the title "QUEEN OF BLUES" from way back in her childhood & gets better & better its right at 2014 & accolades still coming in on her Blues & Jazz techniques
It's even WAY better than Whitney's version!!!.My standing ovation to my beloved idol, the greatest female vocalist of all times: Christina Aguilera!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤
I LOVE Whitney singing most anything but THIS song, Christina killed! It was definitely wayyyyy better than Whitney's. This song needed Christina's raspy soulful voice. It was perfectly done!
Don't forget about Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald and sooooo many more great vocalists tho.... with all those singers I can actually hear the melody instead of embellishing every single melody note, like all the pop singers do in the modern scene. So many bullshit show off licks that don't actually sound that good.... if they'd lose half of em then it would breath so much more, but its kind of mandatory these days to outshine the other singer by adding all your tricks and licks, which isn't musical. idk man. It's your idol, I'm not trying to shit all over that hahaha. She's obviously a great vocalist. Just not a fan of too much showing off I guess
Yes, she needs to do a jazz album. She also needs to do it R&B album and bring back the 90s sound. I don’t know what she’s waiting for but I wish she would.
This song really speaks to me -it's like hearing a sermon that you know had nothing to do with you, however, it reaches to your soul. Christina Aguilera did a great job! The words solidify my understanding that there can only be a beginning and ending to any relationship. Some that should have happened did not, I call it fate. However, one cannot go back and do it over, one can only go forward.
Heard for 1st time on SiriusXM’s jazz-only “Watercolors” station (66). Continue to enjoy her authentically soulful voice. This is HER genre! One of my favorites is Aguilera’s “Oh Holy Night”. 👩🏾🦳👊🏾💥
Ohh...this is DELICIOUSLY😋 immaculate! Christina's soul penetrating voice🎤... Herbie's skin-tingling, whimsical notes🎶; swirling, 🌪sparkling,✨️ and dancing💃 around her strength! Indeed, he is precision on the ebony and ivory🎹. Mmh, chef's KISS!💋💋
Wow! This songs speaks so profoundly to me I have no words. The vulnerability of the words and the melody are so beautiful. This is a true lovers song! So deep, strong, and full of hope. Wow!
So soulful. This was nominated for a Grammy Award. It Lost to Gorillaz's only win so i'm not too upset. This could easily fit on Christina's Back to basics album.
I've been so many places in my life and time I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhymes I've acted out my life in stages With ten thousand people watching But we're alone now And I'm singing this song to you I know your image of me is what I hoped to be I treated you unkindly But darling can't you see There's no one more important to me Baby can't you see through me? Someone needs to tell Christina before it’s too late that this style is much better than the recent over singing she’s doing.... this is heaven to the ears
I read the last few comments below and they are all about Christina Aguilera. I guess that's because of the generation (I'm closer to Hancock's age) and just that popular music performers are better known than jazz. But I was always going to focus on the piano part as soon as I saw this piece existed. It's interesting because Leon Russell, who wrote it, had an iconic piano intro that was also echoed elsewhere in the piece. Russell's intro is a very nice bit of piano, though during one of his videotaped renditions I think he stumbles slightly during it, showing that his piano skills were, perhaps (for a professional) moderate. It doesn't take away from Russell's great accomplishment in writing and performing this excellent and memorable song. I have not listened to anything close to all of the covers of the song, but I have listened to Donny Hathaway, Andy Williams, Ray Charles and this one, at least. All the others duplicate the Russell piano intro pretty close to exactly. Which makes sense, since it's so good and fits the song so well. But Hancock blows it off completely. It's almost like he started just from a raw list of the chord progressions and made up his own arrangement. In places, maybe he even re-harmonized the melody. I don't even hear anywhere a hint of reference back to it, even as a gesture. Of course Hancock's version is very good. I admire Herbie Hancock going back to the Maiden Voyage days. It's fitting that Hancock, the jazz piano player out of all those who did the song, replaces the piano voice with something his own. If I could only listen to one version, I'd probably still pick the Leon Russell performance. It's good, it's the original, and it has characteristic voice that is distinctively Russell. Second to that I like the Ray Charles performance, which . But I'm glad the Herbie Hancock version version (which is how I think of this one, no disrespect to Aguilera, who does sing it well) is out there too. It would be instructive to learn the piano part from Russell and then also from Hancock, to get a better feel for the contrast. I think I'll try that, though it will take me forever.
Why won't she trust her own voice, style and talent and make an entire blues and jazz album 😩 after years I still come back to this gem! Christina you are flawless

Back To Basics, I still pull out. It's close. But it's nothing close to a 3 disc BLUES boxset.
Yeah, an artist of the caliber of Herbie Hancock isn't going to pick just "any" singer. C. Aguilera is one of the greats, and this album absolutely proves it.
she's on a higher level
When I tell you, this is such a magical rendition. I always come back. Always.

Right there with you. Coming back in 2024!
She can saaaaaaaaaaaang and that's exactly what she did on this!!!!! Beautiful rendition. Such a beautiful voice.
Christina at her very best! I couldn't get enough of this when it came out!
So underrated. This girl has pipes! HH just takes it to another level.
I thought Christina was all teeny bop until I heard this song...She rocks this song!
Love the maturity of her soul on this.
Christine's rendition of the song brings me to tears each and everytime i hear it! Absolutely beautiful!
I love all the versions but this one is right up there with Donny Hathaway for me.
This is LEON RUSSELL’S song, not Donny’s. Leon wrote it for singer Rita Coolidge.
Bonnie Schuerman Yeah, but they said this and Donny Hathaway’s versions are better to him/her. The person never said Donny wrote it, genius.
I love her interpretation ... but, people ... Donnie owned it. The spaces between phrases, the whispering of perfectly pitched notes ... timing that paid no attention to tempo ... unparalleled. Amen to that. But I do love the Donny Hathaway version.
Natalie Paige Ogden I know both of them did a great job✌
Christina's voice give me chills. Amazing song.
Her voice was done for it....we miss a complete jazz and blues album
Hands down the best cover to date.
STILL brings tears to my eyes
Christina should have started singing songs like this a long time ago!
BTW- It was Herbie Hancock who gave Christina Aguilera the title "QUEEN OF BLUES" from way back in her childhood & gets better & better its right at 2014 & accolades still coming in on her Blues & Jazz techniques

If you're going to sing a Donny Hathaway song, you gotta bring it and Christina brought it
Donny didn’t write this song. This is a Leon Russell cover. However, Donny live album is one of the greatest live album ever performed.
Yessss she did!
This is the best rendition of this song omg she played NO GAMES ! This shit right here.....
AIN'T IT THO!!! HIGH 5!!

You need to hear Leon's original version, preacher man preachin'
I love how that is absolutely utterly her, and how she gets Herbie to just RIP she's just amazing 😍
Christina, you DID that! You are freakin' awesome! I played this in my car until it wouldn't play anymore. 💗❤💞

This is Leon Russell's song.
This song is hard to do right but she did, Donny Hathaway's version makes you cry
Ok.... i thought i was the only one who felt this way.

Cristina and Herbie. Thank you.
This song still hits after all of these years. Wow!

I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes
I've acted out my life in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now
And I'm singing this song to you
I know your image of me is what I hoped to be
I treated you unkindly
But darling can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Baby can't you see through me?
'Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you
You taught me precious secrets
Of a true love
You wanted nothing
You came out in front
When I was hiding
But now I'm so much better
And if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
'Cause my love is in there hiding
I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You're a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone
And I was singing this song to you
I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You're a friend of mine
And when my life is over

Hancock started with Donald Byrd, then to Miles at age 22. Miles replaced him with Chick Corea after a 6 year stint. The rest, as they say...
