2 larceny in the top 5 is shocking. However I have A123 and it’s blown the doors off of Weller full proof, CYPB, Antique, Makers Cask, Makers BEP, Bookers, even Stagg 22a and Elijah B523. EC B523 has been ahead of Stagg 22a blind every time for me but it’s been close. Suggestions for next year: I love to hear the notes you’re writing down for each tasting. That or have the film crew write in next to the whiskeys on the graphic what you’re writing. The 25x4 format seemed better than 10x10. A new graphic of the top 25 with scores and notes would’ve been great to reference for the final tasting. A reblinded top 25 the day after like I think you did last year seemed to even out the results. Overall excellent night at the World Series of whiskey. Super Bowl of sippin’. Thanks Fred! Very cool to see the process. I had the same reaction to the Larceny C923 and was happy that so many slept on it and that they even rated B523 higher. Maybe you and I have similar palates.

Great job! You are like a marathon runner (of whiskey!). I was actually sipping Larceny A123 while watching and that sumbritcher was definitely hitting everywhere on the palate. Love seeing a lot of bourbons that the common man can pick up in your top finishers. Just goes to show you that just Buffalo hunting will have you missing a lot of other great game! Heaven Hill had a great night indeed.
Your journey is so inspiring! I'm so glad you set the stage with the message in how you came to where you are. Also, I'm totally blown away as most people in how you do what you do! Even with spitting, I have no idea how you keep your pallet on point through the whole sample menu. Props!
I've always enjoyed Larceny BP but it usually gets ignored. It was removed from allocation in VA in the last year and sits on the shelf. I may pick up another C923 today.
I don't own the hype bottles... but I've tasted many of them. I DO own Larceny A123, Larceny C923, Barrel 35... Not bad bottles, but in no world belong above ECBP C923, Stagg, JD12. etc. I also own Green River, Michters US1, OF100, 1856, etc... and while they vary from OK to pretty good... Some of the stuff they are beating (MMCA, Handy, etc)... makes zero sense. I think this demonstrates a problem with doing these blinds with too many whiskeys at a single time. It muddies up the palate and you get results that in a vacuum would never hold up. I don't believe that Larceny A123 or Barrel Batch 35 would ever beat EC C923, Handy, MMCA etc in a fair fight for 99% of people. And OF100, Mich US1 Bourbon, Green River... beating MMCA/Handy? That's kind of a joke.
Still making my way through this video, wish I could've seen it live to ask this. I know you're totally in the zone when you taste things, but in your mind do you ever just know what the pour is when you're tasting it? It seemed when you got to that smokey flavor that you immediate knew what bottle it was.
Was a fun marathon to watch, best production yet. Crazy the unobtanium won, but also good year for Larceny. Wheaters are not exactly my thing, I'll gladly let the rest chase em down 😏. Shock of the day is the Makers Cellar Aged.

Debated on the James E. Pepper Decanter, but passed. Glad I did. Next shop I got LBP c923 instead. Was able to snag it for $53.99. Just tried it, and it’s incredible. Especially at that price.
I try not to think of brands while i scoring. It can get in your head and you have a bias on the glass based on the brand. So, no, I didn’t think that either was MM. but i did believe going in that it would finish top 10. I also thought the same thing about the old stagg when I reviewed for club marzipan. I was right about one!
Great show, Fred! A couple of thoughts I had while watching….it would be awesome if we could see every card and/or if you can say out loud what number ranking you give EACH OF THEM! I know it was readily accessible this year, but did you try Willet Small Batch rye, 4 yr. Family Estate? I purchased a bottle from a big Liquor Chain here in Texas, for around $76 I think it was. My goodness its extraordinary, IMO. Please let me know your thoughts, I'm needing some affirmation. Justin Miller
Fred, you should really add a cup of coffee beans to reset your nose as well. Not that it is off but after the cracker and high alcohol notes, it really does baseline the nose.

Is a blind tasting really the best way to do a top whiskey list? When I do a blind tasting my taste buds get completely screwed up. And the higher proof whiskies usually seem to do better, as the lower proof whiskies seem a lot lighter and less flavorful than they actually are.
First of all fred I love you're channel but have a question and suggestion. Why not do top 20 instead of 100? Your palette must be obliterated by 50 in. Keep up the good work

I don't think that 100 in 1 sitting is a good idea.... The hottest drinkers will always make it to the top, but this should be broken out over the course of 3 to 6 days. I think as the years of your list has gone on. It carries less weight because we see how it is done.
HOWEVR, its not uncommon for judges at Spirits Competitions to exceed 70 samples from what I understand. Had he not taken brakes, cleansed his pallet, consumed almonds, and checked salty.....I would be suspect. He just stretched his judge legs a little. Think most watching are simply use to watching the "whiskey bros" sample 5-10 with bottles on bar. Nothing to unusual for the pros I suspect. And hot whiskies are not the same as high proof well crafted whiskey
Ok.. can you drink a pour of Evan Williams bib and then blind the top 15-20 with a fresh palate? This has become a competition of whiskeys that drink too hot before drink 5 with underlying flavors. Not exactly most peoples criteria for whiskey of the year. I love larceny as a drunk nightcap.. but if i have it before my palate is blown out it’s just hot and unpleasant.

I am a professional wine maker. Most competitions get hundreds of submissions with a small handful of people reviewing them. How do you think they judge them all?

The 23 batches are quite good, better than ECBP B and A batches. Also, whether Fred wants to admit it or not, he has a soft spot for wheated bourbons.

I bunkered 6 bottles C923 and 2 A123 early November yeah they are that good (have receipts and texts telling folks to buy in October)
