Very interesting; I could listen to these men for hours.
a great listing . lots of history of moonshine.
I love the story's on how revenewer s,were shot on site, and fed to the hogs..
my great grandma in Kentucky had jugs of moonshine and dandelion wine in her basement I don't think she ever drank it, but she used it for trading in the holler and hills
"I dont need you to tell me how to live my life".
My grandpa was a bootlegger in Northern California and was sent to Alcatraz for 5 years during prohibition.
I've always loved the history and culture of Appalachia, especially where it concerns the music and moonshine. So much that I don't even care that old time bluegrass and white lightening led to Toby Keith and Nascar.
RIP POPCORN SUTTON!!!!!!!!!!
I am British with Irish descendants, they came from Deptford SE London next to the Thames .Well they made potchene and was made from potatoes ,I had a pint of potch` as it called. Man blew my mind

very good video , thank you I really enjoyed it
its changed a few times in the past 100 years. from Dawsonville, Wilkes County (where I hail from),Cosby TN, and now Franklin
Preservation and shelf life stability was a key factor as well.
The Bondurant brothers lived in the western edge of Appalachia and Franklin county was the wettest county in the country during prohibition. West Virginia sent folks to Virginia to learn to make good moonshine. My last good batch came in Starkey, VA 1990.
How true those concluding comments are ...
My relatives made moonshine in a community called Pea Ridge. There used to be a funny sign on the highway that said “Welcome to Pea Ridge. Don’t let the sun go down on you.” It had a picture of a moonshiner carrying a jug and a shotgun.
If you talking about Tennessee, it’s about 10 minutes away from my hometown. It’s in the county of cannon, well known for hippies and shiners!! Always happy and ready for a good time
There were also Towns that had Sun Down laws that prohibited African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans being out after Sun Down, or they would be shot, especially if they were Drunk, the Sun Down Laws were complex and varied from Town to Town and State to State, many were never taken off the Books so if you go down to the Court House and ask about the Sun Down Laws they'll tell you about them, you might find the Sign might not have such funny back story as you think..
smokin good video !!!!!!!
Let the moonshine shine

You would be wrong because it is Franklin County, Virginia.
Corn wouldn't be possible or practical to use in Montana, so "pine-gin", akvavite, it was to be. Spruce grows easy there, and there's that mountain water, which melts and feeds the streams.
Is the sugar extracted from the pines or is it just flavoured with it?
I didn't realize that Transylvania County was so advanced. I am homesick now.
@theghillies
Nope, that would be Cosby, TN.
Back in the 50"s I knew a man with a still in his barn.
it will be many yrs in the future looking back just like this -after marijuana is legal and the concept of it not being legal and imprisonment and property seizures etc is as archaic and seen as such -the way Prohibition is viewed today.
fascinating
was this filmed in Jackson Co. NC ? all the places that they talk about are around here and i think i met these guys
It’s good consistent money. But it’s hard dangerous work
From what I've read Joseph Kennedy Sr., who Irish grandparents immigrated to the U.S. to escape the country's potato famine, started out here making big money as a Whiskey bootlegger...
there's a town called virgina in ireland thats all i can think of and thats from the south of ireland not the north
Tax man wants his property taxes! Ya gotta do something for $$$
real American history
I'm a mutt, like a lot of others here - There's German, Scottish, Irish, Cherokee . . . you name it. Mainly though, I'm an American, and my family has been in the South since 1767.
I wonder if the same consideration is given to people raising marijuana just to feed their family?
The Second Annual Popcorn Sutton Tribute August 6,2011. Maggie Valley Festival Grounds. Maggie Valley,NC!
If that makes you feel better little man . . . .
yaaa last time i check we got our republic and the fight's not over yet the north will be back in our hands soon
Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it isn't true. The southern culture is heavily derived from Scottish and Irish heritage. It's a fact. Also, show me where I said that being in the IRA is wrong. What I simply did was explain to you "Not everyone in the south is in the KKK, in the same way that not everyone in Ireland is in the IRA". It really can't be that hard to understand. It isn't a comparison of value equality, it's a comparison to give example.
The Irish strike again! 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 hardly ever was there 2 countries more bonded throughout their histories.
Tony Woody was the best sheriff ever clay county
No outlaws. Lawmen don’t have a job
chose one you can't be ever thing
It was the irish that brought the knowledge with them maybe some Scots irish learned how to do it from the irish
my famly has been in Ireland since 8,000 BC :D
Right or wrong not the ? Just like politicians.
Thats all them Folks had to live on It kepted them alive .. if you worked for 25 cents an hour and feed your family Dog Food .or make and sell Likk'r , and you were able to take care of your family .
What would you DO !
And it makes a LOT of Southern folks mad with everything that's been said by you OR a user with a VERY similar screen name. Read through the thread - we're not racist, and YES, Scotch/Irish is a term used for a lineage here. Get over yourself.
Well, there's ALSO the international reading association, but given the level of your intelligence I didn't figure you were a member. Everyone in the south isn't as you described in your original comment, just as everyone in Ireland isn't a member of the IRA (Irish Republican Army) got it? GOOOD, now I'm glad we cleared that up. I think you're just pissed because we were able to get rid of the British, you folks weren't.
Ease up Poncho . . . We share the same lineage. EVERYONE in the south isn't in the KKK just as everyone in Ireland isn't in the IRA. Take a deep breath and ease up.
i imagine they would have got some weird looks from the other stone age people well they couldint talk but you know what i mean grunt
No, the moonshiner didn't know that what he was doing was wrong, because it wasn't wrong, yet it was illegal, which was wrong.
Slave.
and why our you comparing the IRA to the kkk
The businesses survived only because they had an advantage of not paying tax?
I can see where "big government" "no regulation" came from.
They loved the big government as long it goes to the other guys.
@yakyakyak69 Counldn't say it better.
they probably were imagrants too
hi there honey
ohhh you mean THE IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY whats wrong with them i use to know a guy that was in the IRA well his grand father was i dont see how there bad what did they do ?
President Lincoln's family moved from Kentucky to INDIANA. His mother Nancy Hanks Lincoln is buried not too far from where I grew up. He first practiced Law in my Hometown of Boonville, Warrick County, Indiana. Later, he moved to Illinois. PLEASE, GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT ABOUT OUR 16TH PRESIDENT. I Thank you.
okay calm down FYI scotch is a drink not a person never the less i have not slandered anything how could i when you keep saying scotch IRISH why would i slander my self that's silly im simple saying it might make some Irish people mad calling your self scotch/Irish
Here's the deal - I never called you racist and nothing in the video called you (or your people) racists. You immediately got offensive and called all of us racists and wanted nothing to do with us, no association - you grouped ALL Southerners into the ranks of a few. If you knew anything about the South you'd realize that we are all VERY proud of our roots whether Scottish OR Irish.
Yeah man, no one called you racist. You were reading things that were never said by anyone. As tnwatcher68 said, there is MUCH pride in our heritage. Things like, bluegrass music, moonshine, most southern style cooking, and many other things are based around Scottish and Irish roots. Last names, like mine, are a good example. Being racist has nothing to do with being Irish or Scottish, it has to do with bigoted fucks from all over. Relax, brother. Be proud that you're at the root of a nation.
R
okay fair enough :) i might have write that in a fit of anger sorry so im guessing your scotch/Irish
show me your prove that the south was populated by so called scots Irish i did'int know you could be two things were do you draw the line maybe you should include afircan as well and dont forget spain and france that's were Irish people come from and hey lets also include norway to the mix thats were the scots come from and also Ireland as well hey lets include ever body why not there needs to be a cut off some where
@yakyakyak69 why? Because he abolished slavery? Get over yourself!!!
lol little say that to my face im 6 foot 4 now you're just being childish also i don't care what you believe just don't use the trem scots Irish it's offensive to my people
okay listing im sorry reading some of the stuff i said now i relies it was a bit mean but when we get called racist it's up setting we had notting to do with the KKK people think we do in fact Irish people and black people always got along watch this video THE BLACK IRISH OF MONTSERRAT were not racist
So they like drug dealers
okay im not going to debate this with you DUDE that's great but i live for my own country and it's accomplishment's im not saying im not proud but we need that pride here getting kick around by the EU 24/7 the sooner we leave the nazi order the better let all the other european countries deal with the german's no offense to any german's of course
