In my opinion, this is the best performance from Hua in this show. This song is a very very very special song in Chinese music. It was created and performed by a legend. There were too many Chinese singer performed this song in different stages, however none of them can nail it or even be close to the original version by Leslie Cheung. I would say Hua Chen Yu’s “fake monk” is the no.1 in my list. It’s a unique and sensational epic performance in the world. It’s hard the define what the style it is. Highly recommended. You won’t regret, I guarantee.
The singer choose their song, no theme by episode. In 2017, they were scare for the first song of Dimash (new artist with french song), but they let the singer choose their songs and make their own arrangement of the song. In my opinion, this is the best performance from Hua in this show. This song is a very very very special song in Chinese music. It was created and performed by a legend. There were too many Chinese singer performed this song in different stages, however none of them can nail it or even be close to the original version by Leslie Cheung. To me, Hua might be the only artist alive who has priviledge to perform this song. I believe Leslie Cheung would be smiling if he could listen to this beautiful performance.

But they are only allowed to sing 2 of their own songs. The rest must be covers. Please react to episode 10 “Fake Monk”. Episode 9 “Mountain Sea” and Episode 11 “Ordinary Path “ are also amazing. If you want REALLY uplifting, please check out the finale episode 13 “Shout”.
You should take a look at his "Dad, I'm home". It is something that has to be heard - the lyrics are heartbreaking, but should be heard.

Hua Hua said this song I AM WHAT I AM, is his most favorite Chinese singer's most favorite song, so he only wants to sing it on important occasion and audiences listen with all hearts and soul. The first time he sang it on TV was 2013 in his competition, then he sang it every year once in his concert, always been the last song. It means a lot for him.
And we think this is a sort of ceremony, to record what he met, to express his growing, to remember 'who am I'.

Great jobs. You guys got great taste from Chinese singers nowadays. HuaHua’s performance here is at its finest. He is an incredible singer with diversity and amazing voice. This song was originally sung by a Superstar singer in Hong Kong named Leslie Cheung, who was a fantastic artist, with ultimate successful acting and singing career awarded countlessly. He was gay, perfectionist, heartwarming likeable nice guy in person, everyone loved him and he committed suicide on April Fool 2003.
This song is about loving and being yourself bravely as everyone is unique and a treasure on this earth, along with emotions of gratitude, faith, melancholy and loneliness. HuaHua ‘s rendition of this song is touching hearts in hell and heaven. Speechless. Love it.

Think it would be great if you guys know a bit background on the song. The original singer of the song is Leslie Cheung, a legendary Hong Kong singer, and actor who has committed suicide on April 1st, 2003 because of depression. What's even more pathetic, one of the reasons that cause the depression was the disapproval and hatred of the society for him being a homosexual celebrity at the time. Now that you know there's a hidden meaning behind this song, for Leslie to tell the world that, "I don't care about what the others think about me, I am just what I am."
Leslie is the idol and the mentor of a lot of singers in the younger generation, Hua Hua is just one of the fan. This year was Leslie's 25th death anniversary, that's why instead of making the song into 'Hua style', he didn't make any changes on the song at all - doesn't want to change a single piece of the masterpiece.

Jo Wang i believe HuaHua purposely choose to sing this song on that particular perform time to honor Mr. Leslie Cheung's anniversary which is on April 1st. And every year fans from all over the world make sometype of memorials tributes to him. I'm a big fan of Mr. Leslie Cheung and it was such heart warning thing to listen to this performance and have it kept unchange, very much truth to the original performance with the piano and bathrobe. At HuaHua's first note, i thought i'd heard Leslie-gougou. People said imitation is the most honest form of flattering, HuaHua must really loves Leslie's song to imitate him to the purest.

About the question you mentioned, I want to say sth. All the songs the singers performed there were all decided by themselves, they have to choose the songs for each episode and do not know others' styles. If they choose others' songs to sing, they often adjust the compose or edit some part of the song to show their own characteristics, so there is always re-creation of music. You can always see surprises even if you have known the song before. They tried to win by innovations and showing themselves. So in this show, they all have the freedom on their music style. It is interesting that sometimes they choose similar styles in the same episode, because it may be more competitive then. Also, they may sometimes choose the styles according to the ranks in the last episode--how to outstanding themselves from others to stay if it was not ideal last time or less pressured to choose ones they enjoyed more.
You know what I find absolutely crazy? I don't know one single word of Chinese! I dont think you guys do either and yet his performance moved us to this degree??? That is insane. It's doesn't even matter what he is saying.. I don't even have to know the words. HIs performance says it all. Same with Dimash. I think the program "Singer 2018" didn't assign specific styles for singers in each episode. Singers just choose songs they love or want to sing on the stage before filming a new episode. By the way, I remember that this song's original singer had also worn pajamas on the stage and sang this song.😂
