+Bradley PUFC Do you know what I also noticed in that exchange? Two good actions by Blue 21 - Rory Kockott isn't it? First of all, keeps the big dude away, when he obviously wanted to have a word with Nige or argue with Robshaw. Then that patronising tap on Robshaw's shoulder and "just let the referee ref the game eh?" as he strolls past. I think that really influenced Owens's decision to put his foot down.
Two tings brilliant about this. 1) Owens has command, he’s impartial and he’s decisive (not instinctive)
2) the players are so utterly respectful to his decision and authority. Even if they don’t agree with it. Rugby is a classes act in this

That just summed it up about him. Chris Robshaw is a great player, but never shuts his gob when talking to the referee. As soon as Owens said that, he walked away. Brilliant.

I think it's a combination of "Christopher" and the look he gives him. Class as always. And another reason Nigel Owens impresses me is the fact he seems to know the names of all the players on the field he is reffing!
Was Owens a teacher? That "Christopher" was straight out of the classroom.

There's something about nigel that always makes me enjoy the game much better, one of the best referees the game has.
Goes without saying Nigel Owens is one of the best if not the best ref but wasn't the TMO good too. That is some combination.
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.
Nigel is a Welsh and rugby world treasure. He gives and receives respect on and off the pitch. I loved the way he tells off Robshaw "Uh Christopher!" and the man mountain simply apologises like a naughty schoolboy and walks away. Respect to you Mr Robshaw, the tone of viice was enough for me too.
Man, I'm english but I've HUGE respect for Nigel owens best ref in rugby, imagine him on a football pitch XD

I'm from Wales originally, from Glyncorrwg but I live up in the Shetland Isles after my parents moved up here for work when the oil boom kicked off.
We used to go down to Wales every year in the Summer for a 3-4 week holiday, as a kid, I played Rugby up here for the junior county team. one year when I was 14 or 15, my dad was talking to one of his old mates, the junior team's coach and said that I played Rugby. The coach told dad to send me along to the game on Saturday so I sponged a pair of boots from someone and went along.
We ended up getting humped by a team from Neath in the end but one thing sticks in my mind from that game....
There was this lad, Daffyd, who was about the same age as me but he was over 6 foot tall who'd never really played before other than throwing a ball around in school, I guess someone thought they could make a number 8 out of him.
With the game already lost and having had a half-stinker of a match, with about 20 minutes to go I got subbed off so that big Daffyd could have his big moment, his first appearance for his local side.
He was the keenest, meanest thing in all of South Wales at that moment in time. Pumped and raring to go. The coach called the ref, told him he was making a substitution, shouted for me to come off. Not too impressed, I started walking off the pitch past the ref. The ref, an older fella looked over to the touchline at this 14 year old human anomaly that was about to enter the field of play and said: 'It's not coming on until I hear it speak first!'
By the time I'd got off the pitch I was crying with laughter! haha

I searched for this video especially to hear one of the moments of the Six Nations - "Christopher!" Classic Nigel. Loved it.
Remember him telling the Scottish player that if he wanted to dive like that to come back in two weeks?
That's the brilliant thing about rugby is the discipline and respect needed and involved in the game, in football the players are always shouting at the referee and nothing is ever done, but in rugby superiority must be shown by the referee at all times because rugby is a very aggressive and intimidating sport which requires "tough-guy" referee as well players! Nigel owens is the perfect referee and though he will never get to referee a Welsh game because he is Welsh himself, even if he did, the type of person he is, he would still remain 100% neutral and make the correct decisions as always.
I know this comment is old but in recent times he's finally been able to ref a Welsh game. It was Wales v Barbarians in Cardiff late 2019

He`s ref at a local memorial game that I have coming up,What a great guy and fantastic at his job.Always commands respect on the pitch.Just wish he could ref the welsh games!

Shows that Nigel does have a lot of respect, he'll make calls but he will make sure that they are right. The players know that with him as ref, that he won't be settling for anything second best. Top class.

What's football got to do with it? This is a rugby video. Why not just enjoy rugby for what it is without all of the pompous dick-measuring with football? Football has got nothing to do with it.
Also, this TMO is probably the best at his job too. Clear, concise and also seems to be able to make quick decisions where some of them dither for an eternity. That English bloke, Simon Dowd or something, is awful - vague, slow and laboured. Doesn't communicate well, if at all - sometimes it sounds like he's playing some kind of parlour game where he tries to make the ref guess what he's trying to say. Aussie Ben here is the opposite - combination of him and Owens is just perfect.

Oli Batts Ah! Thanks for pointing it out. I don't tend to make that mistake too much but happy to be corrected. Do you know what, I'm listening again now and it's quite a distinctively NZ accent isn't it!!
vonteflon As a football referee, if I require any information from my assistants, I ask that they be as clear as possible in terms of what they've seen, who has done it, and what action needs taking. This TMO does it perfectly 👍

Nigel wasn't a teacher no. But he did work in a Welsh Medium Comprehensive School called Maes yr Yrfa in the Gwendraeth Valley, where legends like Jiffy, Gareth Davies, Carwyn James, Ray Gravell a Barry John are from.
The ref respects the players, and the players respect the ref. it works brilliantly

Definitely one of the best. I'm glad to see Walsh retire and Barnes should really be pushed out, but referees like Owens, Clancy, Poite, Kaplan - all set the standard

Stupid thing is Nigel could ref the match and still be totally impartial he's that good a ref.
I do think he is one of the best refs in Rugby and never misses much always know it will be a fair game when he's in charge and yes in Rugby the ref if in charge unlike in football where they argue with the ref in Rugby you can't and they won't in respect

mackindle12345 My initial comment was tongue-in-cheek; his performance in the final was competent and effective. The Aussies weren't happy, but they seemed content with Craig Joubert. I agree completely about referees in general - rugby gets it right most of the time

I thought Nigel had a brilliant game. him and the TMO made the correct decisions everytime they were needed. although he did miss a knock on for Billy V's try. but im english so not gunna complain to much about that!
Yeah let that one slide ha, oddly enough too was the trip, i mean, he was looking right at it, no more than 3-4 yards away, but had to be told by the tmo to address it.

I don't know if you thought I meant "football" as in American Football, in which case I'm happy to clarify that I meant football as in soccer.
I'm not comparing the two games, I'm referring to the assertiveness of the officials, and the respect they command: the rugby referees are always clearly in charge of the game and don't put up with any attempts at intimidation. Soccer referees should have the same attitude with soccer players.
@@makikomi Sorry, didn't mean to jump down your throat. I just find this habit within rugby circles of constantly bringing up soccer so frustrating. It's a different sport so I don't get why so many people in rugby care about what goes on in it. Also, it seems as if nothing positive can be said about rugby these days without making some kind of negative statement about soccer. It's strange behaviour.

It wasn't really Nigel it was the TMO
Obviously Referee Owens is adored by fans for his complete mastery of his role in rugby. And rightly so. The media made a big thing about Nigel Owens 'coming out as gay' but I have never read any comment in any video on any forum that discusses his sexuality....100% of the comments are of his expertise and understanding of the game. For me this yet another example of 'the media' having a) no idea and b) an agenda, a slant....fans couldn't give a rat's ass. Fans love rugby and love people who play rugby as it should be played. I only mention this as I have a deep suspicion of the mindset of the general media...in that they are filled with a self importance and a desire to justify their own biased opinions. In reality they know shit.
