  • At the turn of the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire was at the zenith of its power. However, its success did not go unnoticed among its neighbours. To its east lay the Timurid Empire. Sultan Bayezid provoked Timur, leading the latter to invade the Anatolian Peninsula. The invasion culminated in the iconic 1402 Battle of Ankara. It nearly destroyed the Ottoman Empire entirely.

Well, Bayezid was the son in law of Lazarovic and tbh Serbian cavalry outmatched their counterparts on the battlefield in any possible comparision. Turks were used to be mercenaries for a millenia and Timur's treasury was quite huge. Fun fact: the war elephant regiment had a commander called Isen Buga. It is said that he hid his troops and beasts in a forest near the battlefield. Today, that region is called Esenboğa (which literally means Isen Buga in modern Turkish) and modern day Ankara's international airport is located right there. Because of this, the airports name is Esenboğa and it facinates me it took its name from a warlord, riding his war elephant to the battle.

Serbs were the most loyal soldiers. But Kara Tatars paid very high price for their betrayel. Timur took them with him towards Samarkand, and on the way they rebelled, most of them were massacred by Timur's order. Also rumoured that Bayezid asked Timur to take them away.
So Timur treated well to Bayezid and didn't destroy his state, also because of his wish.

yes, we Turks say that when we tell our own history. The Serbs are fleeing after his four sons have fled. sons are forcibly abducted to be enthroned. But the Janissaries and Beyazid fight to the end. After betraying the Akkoyunlus, the 2nd Mehmet (Conqueror) organized an expedition, defeating all of them and capturing them. He killed 400 people a day as an example. He was walking around with a rose in one hand and a sword in the other. The conqueror was the best of the Ottoman Empire.

@Ali Kılıç The Ming Dynasty had many setbacks but they bounced back. It was thanks to the Yongle Emperor who was a good military leader. Remember how the war between Timur and the Timurids started in the place? It was because the Yongle Emperor kicked out the Mongol regime from China and then vassalised the Mongol tribes. Conquering China requires decades of effort. It took the Mongols 40+ years to do so. Timur would sacked a few cities but in the end he would be forced to leave as armies after armies of Ming soldiers would deplete his manpower and resources. It would be a raid and not a conquest. The Timurids after Timur realised how pointless and difficult it would be for them to have fight the Chinese so they just made peace and kept good relations.

    • @grimgoreironhide9985

@Ali Kılıç A Jihad won't make a difference. The Chinese will still resist and have the manpower to do so. When the Mongols invaded China it wasn't just a raid it was Conquest and it took them 40+ years to do so. And they only succeeded because they had the support of the Han Chinese who wanted to remove the Khitan and Jurchens from power. Do you think the Han Chinese would welcome Muslims with open arms and support the invasion?

''The number of Timur's army was 300,000 and 32 armored elephants that amaze and astonish the eyes of the beholders, while Bayezid's army, 120,000, fought in Ankara on July 28 from sunrise to sunset..All the Turkmen princes who were deprived of their throne by Yildirim left him and joined Timur's army with their units of their emirates
This was one of the major reasons for the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in Ankara, in addition to the fact that the difference in numbers was great, and towards the afternoon prayer, Crown Prince şehzade Süleyman Çelebi with the Grand Vizier Çandarlızade Ali Pasha lost hope for victory, so they left the battlefield with a corps of 30,000 men.
The sultan was in the heart of the army, and he continued to fight until he was captured at night in Cataltepe. Timur's losses were 40,000 casualties (...) The Samarkand-Ankara road, which is about 4,000 km long, was very far from his base, and Sultan Bayezid Yıldırım made a big mistake by accepting a field battle instead of using the hit-and-run warfare ''
The Battle of Ankara was the largest field battle that took place on the face of the earth during the Middle Ages (476-1453), in which two of the greatest military rulers in history clashed, and in which two Muslim Turkish khagans competed for victory and were dividing the lands between China and the Adriatic with their sons
The Battle of Ankara in Turkish Islamic history is one of the biggest disasters that delayed the growth of the Ottoman Empire and its conquests for half a century. It also extended the life of Byzantium and the Middle Ages by 50 years and delayed the unity of Anatolia by 70 years.

Serbian army was an Builder army.
Most of captured Serbs were released.
Only the best builders were kept in captivity, around 80 of them.
Those builders upgraded Samarkand and other cities.
In those times, only few people knew how to build two or more store buildings. Without nails!!
Sultanesse Leonora was Stefan Lazarević's sister, married to an Oddoman, instead to an catholic king.
That says alot about the time. Now we know it was a right choice.
Leonora was released from captivity. Lazarević asked for her and his army. Temerlan agreed.
Sultan was an idiot and Lazarević 3x broke the encirclement around him.
Temerlan to his general: Those Derviš!!!!....They fight like beasts!!! But, they dont know it is INANE!!!!

After RAT (wAR) for RT (eaRTh)........RATtnik(warrior) becomes again RATar (fARmer) on his own RT (land, earth).
Every serbian warrior was an priest, preaching the TRuTH) on his own RT (earth).

Something Europe does not understand! Bolje GROB nego ROB!
Mogul means mighty and were called this way.
This is why Moguls (many entities under Kan,Ban,Van; Pan - Pandava) realeased the Serbs, noble in soul, not in titles and gold.
King Milutin already defeated Moguls before, so Temerlan knew about Serbs, some stone age people, by westerners standars, using special tacticts known only to highest warrior cast Kshatriya. Šatro language Bela=Labe Nada=Dana
Stefan was kinda leader of Red Dragon Order in that time. Every nobleman, in Europe, wanted his son trained by Lazar. Vlad 3 Cepeš, Jan Žižka, Luksembourgs, Alfonso, Ladislav etc. helped to defeat Teuton Order.

Just like that Timur saves Europe maybe permanently: 50 years were wasted just to recover the lost lands and power and go back on Balkan campaigns. Crucial time during which Europe went through a period of progress that set them ahead of the Muslim world technologically. It's ironic that Timur's conquests were in vain and his empire eroded quickly after his death while Ottomans fared even beyond Timur's successor state Mughal Empire which settled in India.

If the Ottomans had not been busy with a civil war against the Timurid dynasty, the whole of Europe would have been under the Ottoman flag.
It is quite sad that the Ottomans behaved very selfishly in the 14th century. Peace and permission were granted to conquer Eastern Europe, but the Ottomans canceled their natural spread to Europe and returned to fight against the Timurid dynasty, who were also Muslim brothers and desired sole rule. This led to the most devastating war in Muslim history. Thousands of elephants from India were used by the Timurids to crush the Ottomans, resulting in the deaths of 40,000 Ottoman soldiers. The Ottomans were declared defeated after their leader was killed by the Timurids.

Sultan Yıldırım Bayazid is the first Ottoman sultan to drink wine/alcohool, and this is because of his beautiful Serbian wife, who remained a Christian and did not convert to Islam.
He married her after the victory of Nicpolis, and since that time he has been in decline, as she was an evil bad omen for him
Mustapha Al Junabi [died 999 AH 1590 AD an Arab Historian said
''The sultan was informed that Lu’lu’ ibn Laz, [Lazar] the king of the infidels of the Serbs, had a daughter of a great beauty, so he sent for her father to propose to her .. he accepted that and prepared her for him..the Sultan loved her and favored her over the rest of his wives ..she remained Kafira [infidel] and did not convert to islam she made him love fun and drinking wine ..He was the first to drink wine from the house of Osman and since that time, the state of the Sultan began to deteriorate until what happened to him in Ankara
Sultan Bayazid's son-in-law ,the husband of his daughter Fatima, Sheikh al-Arif Amir Muhammad al-Bukhari (d. 833 AH 1429 AD) used to advice the Sultan to stop drinking wine and warn him of the punishment of Allah..And he ued to say to him, Beware lest Allah will punish you with a fierce enemy

Every history geek who deep-dive into history with an impartial perspective will realize that the ottoman military was vastly overrated. In almost all early crucial Balkan conflicts, ottomans had more men, supplies, and gunpowder than their rivals. When the odds were equal or they faced up more equal grade enemy, the ottomans were utterly broken and decisively defeated.
Gjergj Kastrioti, one of the most prominent ottoman ass-kickers in history, had a 24-1 win/loss ratio against the ottomans. Besides, Kastrioti's army was vastly outnumbered (most of the time 10 to 1), largely consisting of militia and volunteers. Ironically, Gjergj Kastrioti was enslaved and trained by ottomans. Yet he was a far better soldier&leader than any other ottoman sultan&pasha in history. After all, he was a proud Christian. The ottomans may have enslaved his body, but they had never enslaved his soul.
Not only the ottoman Balkan invasion, this situation also applies to subsequent battles that took place in the following centuries.
In the Battle of Ankara (1402),Mongolian descendant Tamerlane inflicted significant casualties on the ottoman while imprisoning the ottoman sultan. At the beginning of the battle, both belligerents exchanged letters, and Tamerlane humiliated the ottoman sultan more than once.
Let's take a look at the siege of Constantinople, for example. Ottomans deployed more than 100,000 men plus giant cannons forged by Hungarian engineer Orban that have been unique and never seen that age. On the other side, the city defenders had barely 10,000 and were out of livestock and munitions. Despite that, the siege took 50 days and the ottomans lost half of their armies.
Just do some research. Since when did mehmed, "the so-called conqueror" who annexed Constantinople, win which battle while the odds were against him? He always got the numbers, cannons, and manpower. :)
The ottomans first confrontations with the colonial powers also ended up with military disasters.
Battle of Gulf Oman 1554 decisive Portuguese victory, ottomans lost all their ships, ottoman admiral fleed like a chicken and Battle of Cape Corvo 1613 (It was a crushing Spanish victory, a vast amount of ottomans taken prisoner by the Spanish)
Ottoman-Portuguese conflicts (1538-1560) also resulted in Portuguese victories.
Prince Eugene of Savoy from Habsburg dynasty was another notable ottoman crusher in history. His achievements against ottomans were pretty impressive. Battle of Zenta 1697 and Battle of Petrovaradin are simple examples of how he brought down ottomans.(During these battles, Eugene had 20,000 men, and ottomans had more than 100,000 men. After these battles, no other ottoman sultan dared to lead military campaigns. Literally, the ottomans came to the negotiation table while on their knees (Treaty of Karlowitz 1699) and bowed to the Habsburg terms.
The ottomans so-called predecessors, the seljuk turks, had no difference in that subject. They were also defeated and humiliated in countless wars like ottomans while holding tactical&numerical superiority. The Battle of Lake of Antioch 1098, the Battle of Sarmin 115, the Battle of Didgori 1121, the Battle of Iconium 1190, the Battle of Kosedag 1243 etc. Moreover, this Turkic faction was just a bad copy of the Mongols in terms of warfare. The only thing they did was implement cowardly hit-and-run horse archery tactics, nothing more. Since I referred to seljuk turks, I'd like to refer to some misinformation about it that is spreading around the internet. :)
The factual crusades conducted by Catholic factions were regarding the Holy Lands, Jerusalem, and Levant states and ignited by the Pope
.This means the other prevention attempts to repel muslim invaders from Balkan territory should not be defined as a crusade like Nicopolis and Varna. (the ignorant turkish brats are speaking about these all the time.) Here's a quote from a historian to bring clarity to that topic.
" I've seen constant misconceptions on the internet that the goal of the Crusades was “to prevent Muslim expansion into Western Europe” or something. This is not so. The First Crusade's stated aim was to aid Eastern Christians, primarily the Greek Orthodox Byzantine Empire. After the First Crusade, the subsequent Crusades aimed to preserve Roman Catholic rule in the Holy Land, especially Jerusalem. This was the stated goal of the Crusades and since the last vestige of Roman Catholic rule in the Holy Land fell in 1291, which is why people say the Crusades failed. This is also wrong, The first, third, and sixth crusades succeeded."
The Russians were another faction that constantly beat up this empire throughout the 19th century. The Treaty of Kuciuk Kainargi (1774)was at the outset of Russian dominance over that sick empire that resulted after the Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774). Since that date, Russians always have prevailed during the conflicts with ottomans. (except the Crimean War 1863, in that war Britain&French teamed up with ottoman and saved them from another disastrous defeat)
I'd add that info too, The battle of Serbs ain't happened. It's a myth the ignorant turk fools tend to believe in. You cannot find any single history book that covered this battle. As for the battle of Maritsa, there was no way the Serbs had gathered such a large army at that time. ( just a lie spread by pan turk clowns) Even at the Battle of Kosovo, Lazar Hrebeljanović (the national hero of Serbs barely rallied around 10,000/12,000 men under his command). The numbers of Balkan faction armies are grossly exaggerated by foolish turk brats, without any single historical proof.
As a history geek, I am an expert on seljuk&ottoman history even though I despise both factions. I gave the exact date of the Battles and the names of prominent military figures who crushed ottomans with supplement citations. :) I'm pointing out historical facts here.
Only ignorant ottoman fanboy turk fools are bragging about that garbage empire. They never read any decent history books in their lives all of their knowledge is based on the internet and ahistorical TV shows in turkey, merely coming up with copy/paste replies from the internet. (mostly Wikipedia)
This garbage-sick man empire only brought poverty and misery to humanity. Zero contribution to science, art, and literature had left behind a disgraceful legacy. Their so-called bloated military might is just a myth that ignorant muslim clowns ( ottoman fanboy turks mostly) believe it. :)
With this lucid argument, I've debunked those myths one by one based on detalied historiography.
