The Knock is a sonic boom with flame travel and burn rate at approximately 750 mph and is an explosion as far as engine is concerned. The shock wave causes high resonance of piston rings which will break the top ring seats and destroy them. The cause is too much spark timing advance. The idea is to tune timing to just below the point of knock to prevent all the catastrophic damage and maximize logevity. Computer cars can tune out the knock automatically adjust for different octanes which is their main advantage. Older ignition systems had to be tuned manually to the octane gas being used and they worked well. Once you get all the initial, rpm and vacuum advance worked out, you get the maximum cylinder pressure and maximum efficiency from a gas IC engine. Happy tuning!
I think you just saved me from getting a new engine... having a knocking sound (thought rod bearing) from like 1600 to 2400 rpm under moderate throttle, not at idle not under decent to heavy load, only like cruising throttle, but I'm running 93, I know my plugs and coils need to be replaced too
I have a pinking noise in my new Triumph T100 twin 2020.....only hear it at idle....start about 20 seconds after a cold start....its gone as the motor warm at about 3 mins. Sounds like tapping.....thought it was mechanical.....but as an experiment I took out the INTAKE AIR TEMP SENSOR. Lay out still connected.....and at cold start heated the IAS with a hair drier.....the ping or tapping is not there if I do this.....far as I seen its making the ECU think the outside air temp is hotter than it is. Whats going on.... What gave me the idea to look at the IAS is that on hot days....I hear the tapping sooner after a cold start....and it goes sooner. Anybody give me any clues.....its quite common with my type of engine....no dealer can explain it.
My car makes a knocking rattling sound from left valve cover when I start and when it gets warm it will knock at a stop light and wants to stall please help
I have a turbo car and it sometimes makes a pinging sound at 4000 rpm for a couple of seconds then it's fine. It's only sometimes tho and sometimes overboost as well and also p1227 code comes up but its only sometimes.
the colliding fronts theory doesn’t make sense, Imo, I don’t know who came up with it. It’s true two fronts will cause a pressure spike but not because they collide. The secondary front basically accelerates combustion because fuel burns in two places at once. Pressure would go up like twice as fast but that itself wouldn’t be a problem. the problem is the piston may still moving up after the fuel has burned and will fight against the pressure. so it’s just equivalent to having a very advanced timing. There are cars with two spark plugs and the colliding wavefronts don’t cause any damage because of proper timing
A well trained mechanic/technician can help you with this. They need to understand the theory behind this though, and not just be a parts changer. You'd need to do a little research and find a shop that was up to the task. Have you been running higher octane fuel to mitigate the issue?
@@pccastengineperformance7844 just put a full tank of v-power in it yesterday after running all the fuel out of the car I noticed it was slightly better but didn’t really change much which has me worried since everyone says that running higher octane will always fix the problem but is only a Bandaid
@@MogulOX Did you try the highest octane you can get or just one step up from "regular"? I rarely say this but you may also try one bottle of octane booster and see what happens. If it really doesn't change, you have a severe issue like a timing component off, completely plugged EGR system, or something similar. The other possibility is that it is some other engine noise, like the the start of "rod knock", piston pin slap, something like that. Again, sounds like you might want to find a local mechanic that has great recommendations and really knows their theory. Best of luck with this, I hope it ends up being something simple. Let me know if you find resolution to this issue!
@@pccastengineperformance7844 just tried a bottle of the octane booster I noticed slightly higher power but the pinging is still the same I’m guessing it’s something to do with timing don’t really know of any people that can help around the Portland area
High Oct not 87 just because it's the cheapest fuel don't mean fill your tank with it just means your a tight a-- u cant take it to your grave and u bault a stronger or faster vehicle so u got to pay more for the fuel at least u don't haft to run 110 Oct that cost 14$ a gallon so put higher Oct and done !! It's only 30 cent more a gallon 20 gallons 6 dollars more people kill me with that bs !!
Just like people driving to the other side of town because gas is 5 cent cheaper u are only buying 20 gallons of gas u saved 1 dollar omg kill me dead as hell if u were buying 100,000 gallons it would matter but 20 nope !!

How often do those upper rings brake?
Nice job thanks for making this video.
Which one of these videos would talk about the sound each of these different conditions make. What fo they SOUND LIKE???

Try a colder plug and lower the gap
@teddiazjr.6223 I've replace all plugs and coils and it's still there, I've got some cylinder wall scoring on cylinder 7 so I know it's piston slap😭
WHY would my new motorcycle start knocking right after a service at the dealership ???
ECU update and/or oil change.
Help please.

Valvetrain issues. Take it to a mechanic, expect to pay for parts needing to be replaced.

Lower the gap on the plugs and try to adjust the fuel curve 2/5 %

Am I able to take it to a mechanic and have them diagnose it or is it too broad of a problem to bother with

Apparently this is a big issue for the Nissan 5.6 V8s. Yay. Lucky me.
Got it really bad with my 08 Mazda6 literally cannot fix it people say you can fix it but I’m starting to think it’s impossible

volume too high with the FX
I looked your video to know what to do not how.
Also i could do without the annoying music.
Man this didn’t help me at all lol
Like anybody wants to hear explosions while upset about their car having problems.. Trying to find out info.. Not fun
Seriously?
