The Japanese boxset is a lesser known item in the Joy Division catalog. It was released in 1990 as five discs containing Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Still, Substance, and the October 1980 US Atmosphere single respectively. The set is popular in the audiophile community because it sourced its material from the ORIGINAL master tapes. Just about every other CD source, including the "Heart and Soul" boxset from 1997 and the 2007 remastered albums, utilized 2nd-gen sources, poor remasters, or unethical audio compressing. The Japanese boxset is uncompressed, unremastered, and the closest you will get to good vinyl quality.
The set is extremely rare and expensive, but as Joy Division is my all-time favorite band, I managed to get a copy, and am presenting you with "Atmosphere" from the set. Enjoy these classic and beautiful tracks like I assume you've never heard before! Trust me; every track is just majestic, and there's no bullshit echoey crap either.
Note: It's odd they decided to include this single on the boxset, considering "Substance" has both these songs on it. I could understand if the two discs together utilized both mixes of "She's Lost Control", but they don't. However, these tracks DO seem to have either slightly different mixing or slightly different mastering to those on "Substance". They're louder, for one thing.
I always hated the order of the tracks on the compilation. It's not chronological...well, actually, it sort of is, but in a weird way. The compilation takes all the singles and EP's and in order just plays one or two tracks from each before going back and finishing them. For example, the "An Ideal for Living" tracks are both out of order and are separated by 8 tracks. It's stupid. Nevertheless, this was always the best compilation for getting all the non-album tracks. "Still" got the outtakes.

The emotional and spiritual depths and heights of atmosphere are surely unmatched. I still find it jaw-dropping to listen to after 43 years
beautiful. thank god for ian curtis. i don't think i'd still be here today without him and these songs. and now, finally i am a happy old man. but i greive that Ian Curtis didn't make it too.
Mark anthony Not alone mate on both counts.
Old mate im young now but i will make it till i get old man sitting on my sofa listening to this once again...
This recording of "Atmosphere" and "The Eternal" on Closer are their two highest moments for me, really achieves the Music of the Spheres...like someone says below, the album cover was mesmerizing for me, and a gorgeous summation of what I hear when I listen to the track as well. And, yes, Hannett's production is off the charts here. The way he sings "Don't walk away" is like an invocation to responsibility, your responsibility to humanity, an incredible aspiration. I have this record somewhere, but can never seem to find it. Bless the Internet!!
the reason the substance compilation is laid out the way it is would be the same way that new order laid out substance for new order singles. the a-sides first, then the b-sides to those same songs in the same order after all of the a-sides
This song breaks my heart every time I hear it. My beloved wife died quickly of leukemia and this song reminds me of how hard we worked to try to get it right. God, I miss her every second of my life.
"Atmosphere", a two-track US single by Joy Division, first released on Factory Records in October 1980.

In Japan, this was the fifth and final disc from a Japanese box set released in 1990 (as five discs containing "Unknown Pleasures", Closer", "Still", "Substance", in addition to this October 1980 US "Atmosphere" single).
This is probably my favourite verison of She's Lost Control. It's got that eerie droning bass that the UP version just doesn't have. The final verse contains some of the most haunting lyrics I've ever heard.
Thank you for this, made my night. I had tickets for JD at The Edge in Toronto, May 29th, the only Canadian appearance slotted, but then...we all know what happened there! I worked in a record store in Toronto, and Unknown pleasures cane in. All black, textured, little doodle squiggle in a black rectangle in the center, no band photos, no track listing. Too curious, I opened it and dropped it on the turntable, and the rest as they say.... is history
The drums on atmosphere sounds way better than usual! Excellent upload, thanks mate!
Jóia raríssima e emocionante para nós que amamos o Joy!!!!
Pretty much my favorite vid......well this or True Faith by Joy Division's successors, New Order. I really like the choice of string instruments, that the characters therein wear the traditional garb of The Holy Roman Inquisition which, if you observe carefully, illustrates beautifully the band's position on such an institution and the swathe of futile suffering, torment and abuse it once cut through Europe and Iberia during the 1000 or so years of diminutive academia which was ushered in by the utter ignorance of the razing of The Library at Alexandria and all the knowledge of classical antiquity that was stored within.
Great sound indeed ❤
thanks for sharing
Timeless music matched with timeless packaging and design. As a teenager in the 80's I was mesmerized by the album cover, so totally different for rock music back then. 10 yeas later this type of design would be used for New age music and minimalism. Use of Big huge of white space didn't become common place until early 2000's
In the late 80's they released a video for Atmosphere , why I don't know. It totaaly wreck your internal visual imaging of the song
thank you
Obrigado
