I enjoyed the Swing. Stocked up on it a while back because rumour was that it was likely to be discontinued. Never did.
Red label is like the top selling whiskey in some South East Asian countries, and I have met people who choose it over the black and gold - it was what they grew up with, so they actually look for that finish that puts a lot of people off the Red.
In our younger days, we would mix black, dbl black and even gold, with green tea (the sweetened bottled type) or even with honey water. Most of my peers got started on whisky this way, and I still sometimes enjoy a mixer with the whisky.
Also, XR21 is a beauty, smooth, fruity, sweet. And can sometimes be bought cheaper than the blue. Though could easily get 2-3 bottles of other great whisky for that price point.

This was good. Would be interested in seeing a discussion or education on the limited editions and the king george and the black triple casks series. Johnnie Walker was my entry into the scotch world and have been a fan ever since. Now that I have been really getting into scotch and bourbon a bit more seriously the past 2 years or so, I'm starting to become a collector as well. Not to just buy and hold but to drink them too. I don't travel much at all so when people I know, do travel O always ask to get a bottle that is not common in stores. Great show guys, thanks for the imput, cheers

Cardhu used to have "Johnnie Walker's Single Malt" on it. Giving away my age Red used to be 8 year old. When Blue first came out it used to say essence of 60 year old was in it. There was also a bottle labeled as "Johnnie Walker pure Malt" with a moss Green label and listed as 15 year old on the Label.

Way back in the late 1990s or early 2000s my wife and I went to a scotch tasting event hosted by Johnnie Walker where we got to taste the different whiskeys that go into their products. Not sure if they still do it but it could be a fun thing if they are. As for there products I consider Red Label to be a mixing scotch Black is the lowest I go for shots and Blue is a sipping scotch.

Mark, since you’re a JW fan boy, if you ever come to the Philippines, visit a grocery store. JW here is insanely affordable: Example: Black - $16-$22, Green - $34-$40, Blue - $120-$140. Recently I saw an old bottling of the Blue 43% ABV for $120. I got an XR 21 for $73 and Swing for $40, taxes included. Or just go online and have them deivered to your hotel. Yes, we deliver liquor domestically.😎

Great you mentioned the more expensive bottles quickly and added the Swing. And I know you focus on readily available beginners' bottles of JW, so my question is whether you have forgotten the Double Black or isn't it commonly sold in the States? Btw. had the King George V the other day. Nice and quaffable dram, I'd pay 80 bucks for a bottle... XD

Here is what I wrote in my whisky journal:
Higher abv than normal red or black.
Nose: dark chocolate (not completely bitter), green apples, georigia pear, floral--rose water, nougat, hint of cheerios.
Palate: cereal-cheerios close to chocolate but not super sweet, dried apricots, hint of smoke, lime, lemon and cinnamon candy.
Finish: dark chocolate, nutty- sliced almonds, smooth, cinnamon candy or kind of like dull of kids fireball candy.
Again for the price at one of my go to stores of 30 dollars, cant go wrong. Especially for an aged blended scotch.

    • @tjross1313

It may sound ridiculous, but I really think you have to put in some sweat equity to develop your palate before you dive into the single malts. Sure you can skip blends all together, but they do offer a few things that really help you out early on your journey. I'd start with something like Teachers and Chivas Regal, then move to Johnnie Walker Black, Naked Grouse, and then Johnnie Walker Green. Those will introduce you to a sherried/peated fusion (JWB), a heavily sherried First-Fill blended malt (Naked Grouse - this stuff is solid gold), and JWG will be a great step up from those being aged 15 years and containing some fabulous malts. For me, JWG was the game changer. Most would say try Glenfiddich or Glenlivet 12 next, and I'd tend to agree. You don't have to get both, as they're quite similar, so take your pick. After that, you've hopefully had a chance to calibrate your palate to know what you like. If you like Sherried whiskies, buy Macallan 12 Sherry (not the "Double Cask"!), Glendronach 12, or Balvenie 12. Of those 3, I personally say go for the Macallan, but you'll easily hear just as many others suggesting the Glendronach - and the Balvenie is quite good and sort of somewhere in the middle of those two. If you like the Peat, dive right into Islay. Lagavulin 8 and 16 are great places to start, Kilchoman Machir Bay is another great option. I forgot to mention, an Old Pulteney 12 is a great option for a Bourbon-matured whisky that is affordable and has a great Maritime character. I could go on all night and make a couple hundred more suggestions, but I feel like that's a good place to start. Enjoy!

Really not trying to market for them so much as try to explain their line up.... we've done other brands as well and have a few more in mind..... some of these larger brands have such a confusing range. Our goal is to help people make informed decisions on their Scotch journey. Although, I can see how you may see this as "marketing" and I'm sure JW appreciates the free publicity. ~Mark
