    So you're having problems sketching products. They don't look right. Proportions are off. Everything seems to go wrong.
    Well in this video I'm going to simplify things for you. You see most times we tend to overcomplicate things. But if we brake stuff down into the basics and get a good overview of our sketch BEFORE going into details, we're already 80% done with the sketch.
    Might sound weird but trust me, if you try this and really practice this way of sketching, you'll see a drastic improvement in your work.
    I have a couple of videos on sketching wheels which you can check out here:

    Shorter version: Build it by seeing the simple shapes. Then add more detail as you go.

      Yep. Likeness is much easily achieved by starting with the largest, most general proportions going down to the most specific ones.

    This is AWSOME! Do you watch Sangwon Seok? I know his videos are sped up for watching, but you can see him quickly lay out his basic shapes when he does cars. My friend told me to watch him because usually with cars you may start with the wheels and then make a box and then measure your wheel lengths in between. He just makes a basic shape of the car perspective and then lays out some more defining lines. It is crazy what he can do when sketching cars and how he builds up just like you are doing. He must have been doing it for many, many, years though because he does not even have to think how to lay anything out. It like freely just comes out of his hand onto the paper as if his hand is thinking about what to do for him. 👍🏼

    You probably won't read this, but just wanted to ask; often times you say "go with the flow" and "keep it messy" (I.E, just lay down marker and see what happens), and you're often doing things in pen.
    My question is this, as a student who's transferring and needs to build a portfolio, would you say that style of work for a portfolio would be good? Or should I keep things nice, tight and organized (i.e no "seeing what happens", but instead, follow an idea). Would be cool if you did a video on how to help transferring students build the right portfolio so they have a better shot of getting in.
    I'm sure a college doesn't want to see 15 drawings of "winging it"..Perhaps they do? I'm just confused and there is no resources to help build a solid portfolio for school admission, I don't know if I should keep things loose, or keep everything controlled. Yes, I'm also nervous as all hell that the only 2 schools near me won't accept me, I'm just trying to get an edge.
    Also, would you be opposed to critiquing work and maybe giving off a few quick pointers? I know you're probably super busy, but worth a ask!
    TL;dr Should a portfolio for school be super neat and polished(AKA professional level work, or close to it?). Will you do a video showing prospective design students the best way to build a solid portfolio. Will you tear my work to hell and back, and tell me what to change or do better/practice.
    Thanks :D

    • @Thesketchmonkey
      @Thesketchmonkey  6 років тому

      Hey Adrian,
      When it comes to your portfolio, think about what skill sets you want to highlight and what type of companies you want to work with. Tailor the portfolio to show those skills solving different design problems in creative ways.
      What companies want to see is problem solving.
      I give personal feedback to students that are in TheSketchMonkey Academy. There's just not enough time to critique everyone's work.
      All the best!

  • @cb-yr7sf
    @cb-yr7sf 6 років тому +2

    Don't spray your cat, my dude. Find something that scares the cat away or something the cat doesn't like and make them get away from the sketches. Spraying just makes your cat dislike you, but it still slightly helps with the problem. Try snapping or clapping to scare them off and if that doesn't work when they tear up the paper, take them out of the room, and somewhat ignore them. It might be difficult because cats like to see how far you can go and if you feel like yelling just leave the room. You don't want to instill fear or hate on your cat, and when they stop tearing up the paper give them treats and love.

    • @Thesketchmonkey
      @Thesketchmonkey  6 років тому +2

      She loves anything that has to do with water so the squirts from the bottle didn't really do the trick, still tearing up papers and playing for a few hours, then comes and lays down on my neck. She doesn't fear anything. All good, more fun than my other cat who just sleeps all day.

    • @remylebeau2357
      @remylebeau2357 6 років тому

      TheSketchMonkey thats quite odd lol 99.9% of cats hate getting wet, so water spray bottles are usually 100% effective lol if not I'd try everytime the cat does it, get a really cold bath, with maybe ice water, and immediately throw the cat in everytime it does it so it learns to equate tearing up drawings with the cats idea of hell lol

    Get to the friggin point! Your cats, your drinking, your chewed up paper and it leads to the super duper secret tip
    Draw what you see and use the basic geometry the thing is made up of. HOLY CRAP, what a life changer, before this I had always sketched by drawing a turtle and then changing it into a building
