Just wanted to say that the combo of stellar flight, animals, scifi, robotics, microscopic life etc. was a compelling montage of Curiosity's selection. And $15 for a year is _much_ better than Netflix's price

@@limiv5272 AGREED! It's, like, THE most interesting and mysterious caption they've ever used that's makes everyone do a little pupper head-tilt, and Hank says nary a word about it...it's like walking into your friend's house with an Ankylosaurus on a leash, and asking if they like your new jacket.
Their movement almost makes the footage look like it's sped up, but it's actually in real time. It's so cool.
I got a kick out of the footage labeled as slowed down 800% still looking sped up!
that's what i sometime love and hate the micros. They move so fast that when I get to 400x, they get out of my microscope view. Even big bois move fast.

In my biology lab yesterday, I got to remove the hindgut of a termite and see the endosymbiotic organisms through a microscope. There are so many varieties!!! I could have looked through the scope for hours! This channel should try it some time. It's really cool and really easy.

What exactly was your process? Was this a dry mount?
@@krisclark6829 Basically, I grabbed a live termite from a jar of them, put it on a drop of water on a slide, removed the hindgut from the termite, and discarded the rest of the termite. The hindgut is small enough to have a cover slip over it on a standard slide.

I wondered why the bacteria in my slides would get in little lines. Now I know. I love my Micrososmos microscope. I live close to the Willamette river in Portland and love collecting samples on the banks. I find tardigrades every time!
I swam naked in the Willamette river. Shortly after my dad told me it’s the 3rd dirtiest river in the country.
I don't have much to say. That was cool. That's really cool to know about. Thanks to Hank, James, Deboki and the rest of thr production team for once again teaching us something about an unseen world that we walk through all the time.
The rods seem very sensitive to buffeting by Brownian motion. They appear to use it to slowly propel in some preferred direction. However the other bacteria seem to be not affected by Brownian motion at all.
The visuals, the sounds, every episode is so wonderful. If you streamed a long format with the clips and the soundtrack over live like lofi music, so many people would frolic to experience this. I want everyone to get to experience this work.

@@splintmeow4723 This is a really interesting idea. I wouldn't want microcosmos to compromise the educational value. So depending how the YT algorithms treats it, they could add an extra 10 min of lofi footage at the end of each episode. Or a compilation of existing videos set to music, with annotations flashing over each major critter (that you can turn on/off), so you at least can know what you're looking at
@@37thraven OHHHHH I like the latter idea so much! It would need to be a long format live stream affair. Where a premade compilation video of 1-3 hours plays on a loop. That annotation idea you said is very important to the format. I am not sure if Andrew has don’t a long soundtrack of all the channel’s pleasant sounds.
Also they would need to consider that people might use it for sleep. Which means low white light exposure should be at a minimum.
Really think this could bring so many macrofollowers to the channel! Plus I would just love it so much hahaha.

The joy in Hank's voice is so wonderful a sound. And seeing these things, alone and yet together in this lovely little community, brings an echoing joy, no less wonderful - indeed, made MORE wonderful because we share this experience with each other.

What really amazes me about microbes is their sense of direction. Looking at them through a microscope, it is hard to get any sort of bearing; where do I want to go, what do I do when I get there? Looking at microbes, it is like this isn't a question they even need to ponder. They know where they are going and know exactly what to do when they get there, or die in the attempt. Damn impressive, that sense of purpose, I think.

I really loved this one, I think seeing the bacterium corkscrewing through the water really illustrated how thick water seems to tiny things, it's incredible and I could watch this all day as it reminds me why biology was always my favourite subject!

question: would it be possible to use a high speed camera to record footage under the microscope? teaming up with Destin or the slow mo guys to watch cilia beating or crazy flagellates whizzing around would be amazing.
While you're on the subject of bacteria, perhaps do an episode on those that infest diesel and jet fuel. These are fascinating for their choice of environment and also have an economic impact on humans.

I have a question... this last summer I saw something in my pond that looked like one of those spiral shaped bacteria, except it was maybe 1/4 -5/16 of an inch and green, but it spiraled around in the water just like those bacteria... I thought, cool, I'll google that when I get in... couldn't find it... any ideas? Oh! I live on the kenai peninsula Alaska, it's a small muskeg fed pond... around June.

Except for a couple things, 1 into was swimming and 2 spiralina lives tropically, which Alaska doesn't qualify as...
Probably just an amoeba. They are many and can be found all over the world pole to pole.

Those ciliates in last footage looks like they have a preference in direction when they move. They are single cell organisms as far as I know. So they don't have front side or a mouth, how do they have a preference in direction?
Single cell organisms can have a front side and a mouth, like the Paramecia, I think those ones do too :)

What makes me feel so insignificant yet humbled, is that these micro organisms have somewhat an impossible chance to have consciousness, yet they evolve in ways that seem as though they intentionally develop that way, like they mean to.
I don't want to strike up any chords or be contentious or anything, but this is why I am proud to be a believer of God, an intelligent Creator, a genius designer. Praise only be to Him who created all things.
