  • "Smile" is a song based on an instrumental theme used in the soundtrack for Charlie Chaplin's 1936 movie Modern Times. Chaplin composed the music, inspired by Puccini's Tosca. John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954. In the lyrics, based on lines and themes from the film, the singer is telling the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile. "Smile" has become a popular standard since its original use in Chaplin's film.
Judy Garland sang a memorable version of "Smile" on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1963.
Nat King Cole recorded the first version with lyrics. It charted in 1954, reaching number 10 on the Billboard charts and number 2 on the UK Singles Chart.
Sammy Davis, Jr. recorded a cover version of the Cole original, as part of his tribute album The Nat King Cole Songbook in 1965.
Singer Michael Jackson often cited Smile as his favorite song and recorded it for his 1995 double album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. It was scheduled to be released as the seventh and final single from the album in 1998. However, it was cancelled at the last minute and only a few copies, mostly promos, went into circulation in the UK, South Africa and the Netherlands, making it one of the rarest and most collectible of all Jackson's releases. James Hunter of Rolling Stone wrote a negative review: "the climactic version of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" has zero point of view on itself; its blend of rampaging ego and static orchestral pop is a Streisand-size mistake." Entertainment Weekly called this version of the song a "destined-for-Disney rendition." In 2009 at Jackson's memorial, his brother Jermaine Jackson sang a version of the song in Michael's honor.
Natalie Maria Cole (February 6, 1950 - December 31, 2015) was an American singer, voice actress, songwriter, and actress. The daughter of the acclaimed and pioneering American singer and jazz pianist Nat King Cole, she rose to musical success in the mid-1970s as an R&B artist with the hits "This Will Be", "Inseparable" (1975), and "Our Love" (1977). Cole re-emerged as a pop artist with the 1987 album Everlasting and her cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac". In the 1990s, she re-recorded standards by her father, resulting in her biggest success, Unforgettable... with Love, which sold over seven million copies and also won Cole seven Grammy Awards. She sold over 30 million records worldwide. On December 31, 2015, Cole died at the age of 65 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, due to congestive heart failure.
Natalie's accompanied by Chuck Domanico (bass); Sol Gubin (drums); Dennis Budimir (guitar); Alan Broadbent (piano); and arrangement by Johnny Mandel.
Smile though your heart is aching
    Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
    Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through
    For you
Light up your face with gladness
    Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear maybe ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile- what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worth while
    If you just smile
Oh that's the time you must keep on trying
Smile what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worth while
    If you just smile

I was just telling a friend of mine that what we're missing because of all the Covid dreariness is smiling! Everyone is tired and it shows on all the glum faces in the streets! Play it again, Natalie!

You wouldn’t be able to see anyone smiling anyways, because of the masks. Even so, people smile, nowadays, half-heartedly. We are all just trying to get by:/

What's wrong with a poker face? Or a stunned/ irritated/ angry/ infuriated expression? Can't we accept people as is?

This song is really not about that:)
It's about your journey with regards to yourself, it's not about how you look at other people..
And smiling can produce endorphins,so you will be happier if you could smile more, scientifically speaking:)
That being said, if you feel like you need the time to grieve or just to be sad - take it. I feel like we can all just try and do what's best for us at the end of the day.
