Her descriptions are so vivid, both of her surroundings, and her friends and family, that I feel like they are my own family, and the tragedies they suffer thru brings me to tears. This is truly an exceptional book. I hope she writes more!!
I just finished "Wild Swans" last evening (8-21-2020). It took me a while as I'm a slow reader, still. The advantage is that I can remember so well the passage that she reads in this interview. I really wanted to tell the author what an absolutely brilliant writer she is and how thoroughly I enjoyed this 'page turner'. Of course, I'm so pleased to find this interview on You Tube.. Also, as I'm six years older than Jung, I remember reading about a lot of what was going on in China at the time, from the view point a young American reading the Western press, such as the Great Leap forward, the madness of making steel, and the cultural revolution with its persecution of educated people and sending students to the countryside to work alongside peasants in primitive conditions...so it was very intriguing to learn all about it from one who had lived thru that first hand...and yet, the madness of that era is still going on in today's China as they throw millions of their Muslim citizens in concentration camps, and some of that madness is going on right here in the USA with the abomination which is Trump and his cadre of gangsters and nepotism. And in 2020 it is something we can ill afford as Earth faces the catastrophe of Climate Change....with, at this very moment, massive wild fires consuming great swathes of California, and two hurricanes now bearing down on the southern states facing the Gulf of Mexico.
This was the best book I ever read. I was just a teenager when I read it and it affected me strongly. I want to read it again now as an adult.
This is the most wonderful book i have read again and again and i highly recommend something i don't ever do .
I learned so much by reading this wonderful book over and over again, thank you Jung Chang.

I read this book on train from Delhi to Gawhati (3 days train ride) in April 1998.
People need to hear these incredible stories of unimaginable suffering to understand modern China. What a treasure Jung Chang!
I have read this amazing book, everyone in China should have a read...
2.8K views and only 3 comments? What an amazing book. I read it in 1995 and just finished listening to it on Audible. Fascinating all over again.
Thanks Jung i love you.
Mao: the unknown story is also an amazing book. One of a kind.
Life at the Court of King Arthur was like Butlins compared to this.
