I've seen this band seven times and I too am confused about the lack of popularity compared to the quality of their music. In many ways they are the band that people are so desperate for when they bemoan the changes in music since the 70s. Instead, those people lapped up Greta Van Fleet! Incredible really. RS are more popular in Europe I think, but still far from rock megastars.
Both can exist and will exist. Greta is just on a major label. That is the only reason. I know rival was picked up by Elektra, but then Covid. I mean I think in a way Greta Van Fleet elevated Rival Sons back into existence to more people. After Hollow Bones, Greta happened. Then Back to Rival Sons.
Back in 2009 I worked with a guy that also worked at a label. He gave me this promotional cd of a band he said I should check out. It was a white slip cover with two lions facing each other with the title “RIVAL SONS BEFORE THE FIRE”. I had it in my car (1971 Plymouth Scamp!) but didn’t have a chance to hear it, but one day on my birthday that year and losing lots of games of Kings Cup, I was on a good one. Woke up in my friends living room with a throbbing hangover. It must have been about a little before 6am. He gave me some medicinal herbs to ease my headache and I was on my way home. I decided to pop in the CD (sounds so ancient now lol) and I was just blown away at the music, maybe it was the herb, maybe it was ocean breeze on that Manhattan Beach morning driving back on PCH as the sun was coming up but really it was just the music of a solid 4 piece band that blew me awa. I heard lots of influences like the Beatles, The Doors, Pink Floyd and Zeppelin lots of Zeppelin. They have an original sound and still played tribute to their influences. Btw David I love the way you explain these lessons with some bit of history thrown and just want to say what an awesome job you are doing, thank you sir! PS I let a friend borrow that Cd and never got it back...he moved out of state and now I think it goes for about $500 since it was so rare 😕.
Great video. So interesting and beatiful sound. This lesson really inspires you to go outside your comfort zone and explore new things. Do you have more of this on a acoustic guitar? Maybe other bands or more from this band. That would be nice. Thanks for a great video and lovely playing.
Nice one David. I'm a big fan of Rival Sons. Would have loved to hear a bit more of 'Feral Roots' as there's a beautiful jangly bit leading into the chorus that really has me foxed, but many thanks for these tips. 👍🏻
Zep III acoustic lesson would be nice because Jimmy Page used Open tunings and chords like Rival Sons did. I liked Richie Havens albums most are out of print but he used open tunings and so did Barry Gibb used Open Tunings on all those Bee Gees albums. Air Supply guitarist plays some unusual chords that are inverted chords. I have seen a video of him examining that playing inverted chords compared than standard ways because of the patterns. Barry Gibb way of using open tunings and Air Supply inverted chords is somewhat advanced way of playing chords which is overlooked because of the type of style of music they play people don't look at what they are actually doing. When Eric Clapton first met Joni Mitchell playing he was shocked because of how she used open tunings and chords he had never seen or heard that type of playing before. I liked David Crosby First solo album which has open tunings and 12 string guitar voicings chords using open strings.
Really great! We need an Electric side of Rival Sons. Thanks for everything!

Definitely keeping the magic of Zep alive today. Thanks, Dave you've once again knocked it out of the park.
Great lesson!
I buy their albums. Got to see them open for Sabbath. Awesome lesson
I would love to see a Dickey Betts lesson. That man is awesome.
Wow. Great video. Thanks David!

My first introduction to this band. I’ll definitely check them out. From what you’ve played I’d say Rich Robinson is an influence.
