Including information about trips to Mallaig with connections. To the Western Isles and trips up the Caledonian Canal.
If you are in the Fort William area and looking for something to do then a visit to Neptune's Staircase could just be the thing. The staircase is a set of eight locks that form the starting point of the Caledonian Canal. You can reach the locks with a short drive heading north on the B830 from Fort William to Banavie.
Even if you don't have a car with you there are local buses that will drop you off close to the locks. Some fine views of the Nevis range of mountains and others to the south of Fort William can be seen from the locks.
This is part of the Caledonian Canal Walk also known as the Great Glen Way which brings you out at Inverness, a trek of 73 miles.
On arriving at Banavie the first thing you will notice is the bridge that carries the road traffic, which you will probably have just crossed and the railway bridge just beyond. Both of these bridges span the water leading to the staircase.
The bridges swing to let boats navigate up towards the locks. The locks were built between 1803 and 1822 by Thomas Telford and is the longest of its type in the UK.
The road and the railway head on westwards to Mallaig . From here travellers can catch ferries to Rum, Eigg and Armadale on Skye. From Skye they can drive to Uig to board the ferry to Tarbert on Harris or take the ferry to Lochmaddy on North Uist both in the Outer Hebrides.
Another popular trip in the Fort William area is the Jacobite train to Mallaig. This is a steam train which is loved by most people but has a special attraction to rail enthusiasts and young fans of Harry Potter. Our final image shows the train crossing the bridge at Neptune's Staircase.
