Soundgarden had been broken up for awhile and Chris was doing his solo stuff and then when rage called it quits someone recommended that Chris should jam with those guys and Audioslave was born
Actually, it's mostly thanks to Rick Rubin. He produced RATM's last record, Renegade, at a time when it was already known that Zack De La Rocha wanted to quit. So Rick called Chris because he knew that Soundgarden had also broken up. That's how it started... By the way, Rick Rubin later produced all 3 Audioslave records.
Audioslave was born when Zack de la Rocha (RATM Singer) left the band, the other three members wanted to continue playing together, but they needed a vocalist, a friend of the band recommended Cornell, that's when Audioslave was born, which would basically be Rage against the machine with the vocalist of Soungarden. However Audioslave disbanded even before Cornell's death, Rage Against the machine is still playing today, but not full time but occasionally.
I always heard this song as a bit of a dark meditation on the nature of existence...that chorus, "To be yourself is all that you can do." Perhaps implying that no matter who we pretend to be, we are stuck with being ourselves, regardless of the situation...
You guys are on point with being able to be yourselves with your life partner. I have been married now to my wonderful wife for close to 45 years now and we grew together more through the years by letting each other be who we are and excepting that neither are perfect and yet we are perfect for each other. It just takes love and patience.
I just love how this song starts. That twang of the guitar. That sick drumbeat and the haunting melody. Then Chris's silky smooth vocals... Edit: Great reaction guys! I, highly, recommend you check out, Getaway Car by Audioslave. It's on their 1st album. Trust me. It's my, current, fave. Oh. I got a little crush on Mrs. Wolf Hunter. You're a lucky guy, Mr. Wolf, to have found such a badass rocker chick.
Matt Cameron drummer with Soundgarden Pearl Jam and Temple of the Dog, plus many other bands all at the same time. Touring with them all as well. You need to do more Pearl Jam and can I recommend Temple if the Dog Hunger Strike. Can I also recommend a great Scottish band Biffy Clyro think you’d like them.
OH Travis & Suzy You KILLED me with this one .... 2 Reasons .. ( Both #1's) First this song has Big Meaning for me BUT BEST!! What You Both had to Say !! 1st Travis saying That some have hard time being selves...&& Suzy about Marry Best friend....I'm 64 ..Old R&R Chick ( don't know if you saw other posts, met quite a few Famous)... When this song came out was at end of messy divorce & the song echoed What an AWESOME Woman said to me( Tori Amos on her tour bus..she said If He can't handle who you are & Let you be yourself LEAVE!.. she was friend at that point..seen 9 backstage7 on bus 2...met her by Rainn Charity.....she gave me the balls to put on Big Girl Panties & leave )....Long Story Short ( Too Late ) I Am LUCKY!! Met My Best Friend at 52 ...we're going strong & LOL....our Fav thing we say to each other...Wish we met YEARS (Decades) Ago!! Thanks for the Excellent Post !!
As far as I am aware both Soundgarden and Rage were on a break at the time Audioslave happened.
A voice that will be timeless forever ❤️
This world misses Chris, what a legend

Love almost all Audioslave. Great stuff.
Beautiful song ❤️
Mostly Audioslave came about after their earlier bands stopped for a while to answer your question.
I saw Audioslave in Ireland 2005ish and they played killing in the name. And Chris did an acoustic version of Black hole sun. It was really cool
