I just rediscovered this song in 2024. An absolute masterpiece. His voice, the lyrics, and the orchestra, Omg. I cannot get enough of this song. The emotion in his voice. WOW!!!
You old fart! Me too! I love that they used real strings and not synthesizers which were becoming so popular in the mis 70s. They give the music such depth.
ELO is not one of my top bands but I’m not afraid to say it may be one of the best songs ever written. Jeff is certainly a genius composer and writer as well as a great guitarist
this is a masterpiece...as a kid back in the day I remember thinking how cool this guy sounded and how amazing a song about telephones was...back then a kid had to ask to use the telephone...
I had a lonely childhood. But I felt that ELO was the only rock group that felt what i felt. They knew my feelings. Thanks guys for making my life bearable.
Soul crushing that our kids will never know this level of raw talent and the connections this band and all the others like it had in our young lives. You would rarely hear the same song more than once a day or longer because so many beautiful songs were being played on the radio at all times of the day and night. God I miss those precious days!
I would literally listen to this song over and over and those of us who know how u had to hit just the right groove in the RECORD to replay it! God i miss everything about those days, the world seemed crazy back then but compared to now take me back!!
A few years or so ago my daughter and I were eating lunch at picnic table across the cyclone fence from the seaplane dock at the Renton Airport at the very south end of Lake Washington. Stepping off a seaplane was this denim togged, big hair, sunglasses dude amongst his entourage and they boarded a limousine and drove away. I asked the plane handler who was that, anyone special? He said it was, "The ELO guy..." I asked him, "You mean Jeff Lynne!?". He answered, " Yeah, that's the guy's name....." Oh well, maybe better luck next time.......
This is my absolute favorite ELO song! It brings back all the best memories from the 70’s. They were one of my favorite band. I loved their fashion, hairstyle and the shades. I thought they were so cool. They’re the epitome of how the cool guys looked In that decade.
it's hard to believe I was 9 when this song came out. such a great song. music transcends time and space. it's what makes humans unlike any other species. i think it has much more of an impact and influence on when we transition into our next life.
My ALL TIME favorite classic from ELO. Just plain, beautiful music and lyrics. It is almost Beethovan in its majesty. I saw ELO in LA at the Univeral Ampetheater in 77; but that is a blur. When I hear this song, it so pumps me up with joy, and memories of one or two I truly loved in my life; and I cry tears of joy, tears of sadness. This is what great art can do for one's soul.
I was in 10th grade when this came out, listened to it at band camp. Our high school class is turning 60 this year, 18 from my class of 109 have died. Be careful what you wish for.
Great song, I'm only 34 so this song was obviously before my time and therefore all i can think of when i hear this song is Steve Buscemi putting lipstick on.
It's too bad that songs like this don't really get made much anymore, especially with some real music as their base (as in this case). The high influence of classical music on bands like ELO and Queen has been pretty much lost nowadays. Current Pop is just a collection of meaningless bits of sound and god-awful lyrics, and rap is pure trash.
There's a moment at 3:32 when the camera is moving across the singers. One of them realizes and looks towards it with a smile, a genuine smile that says "I'm a musician" with such pure joy that you can't help but smile back. It's one of those moments we can all relate to, that happen once in awhile in our lives, when we think "I'm exactly where I want to be right now, enjoying this brief moment of pure happiness." Love it. What a video.
I know your comment is seven years old, so I hope you have listened to the live at Wembley CD, and other new stuff by the latest version of ELO. Assuming you are not dead.
This reminds me of when I used to work as a radio disc jockey in AOR. This song hits very bittersweet, especially when I remember playing it in the middle of the night when the building is empty except for me in the control room longing for days long gone. Now I play this song on my cellphone, and long for those days when I felt like I was doing something that mattered.
Radio was WAY more than just a means of playing songs for listeners. I was an 80's kid who grew up listening to 92.7 WLIR out of Long Island N.Y. While the great music they played spoke for itself, the station was more than just some music broadcast. It was a family of like minded people all held together by their love of a genre of music and the on air personalities that brought them to us with their own unique takes on the albums and songs. What you did was very useful and I'm sure there's at least a few people who probably remember your time on air. Whether you helped them get through a tough breakup or just gave them what they needed to get through one more day.
@@P-Bass_Pete *I remember once working an overnight shift during a snowstorm on New Year's Eve in Mississippi, and you know I stayed busy, but it felt like family with the listeners, local meteorologists and law enforcement. We were all in that storm together.* 💓
Dang, you make me want to be a late night radio host haha. Sadly people's music taste isn't what it used to be, I don't know a single station near me that doesn't play the same 50 80's hits on repeat. I wish radio stations today had more 70' and 80's variety. Play different bands, don't just play the most popular song from a band, maybe play some of that bands lesser known music. Maybe I should start my own radio station haha
definitivamente somos privilegiados lo que vivimos los 80 excelente....e..l..o... en su maxima expresion...un hermoso mensaje a lo mas profundo de nuestros sentidos,,,mil gracias...
Just classic!!! In our Orange VW Bus on the way to Jr High Football practice. Nothing like nostalgia, but we don't have nostalgia without songs like this. Timeless.
Im glad im not the only one who loves this gem....ok phew...anyhow yea...was 14 when i heard this come out of my radio...for those under 35 radio was a box we had next to our bed...we had a dial to change stations...a station was a number on the dial...anyhow god i love this song
She does not have a telephone line...any longer. Therefore...she cannot hear myself cry myself to sleep. I awaken happy! For she brings so much goodness to Our Life. If she would pick up that telephone maybe I would have the guts to tell her how I feel about her. Nevertheless She is So Awesome I must stand by and bask in the everlasting Glow! Thank You So Much! Greatly Appreciated.
I love ELO it reminds me of a car my parents owned i loved that it went like a rocket and this music was perfect for it! Unfortunately we had to sell it RIP car
these people when I was so young my guitar teacher dozy from Dave Dee said to me you will never be a guitarist till the day you can sit there and play by your self dozy had the greatest respect for ELO its one hell of a thing to be human
Probably the most appropriate song of this last half century. Describes how powerful the simple telephone has become to humanity. Hope some telcos can use it on their ads soon. btw well done on the synchronising and hd on this one unlike the previous one.
I enjoy many things in life but there are few that have given me greater joy and entertainment than Jeff Lynne and ELO. Jeff is so brilliant and talented, classy and humble and if I had to choose one famous person to hang out with and have a beer or two it would be Jeff.
I was fortunate enough to have seen Jeff Lynn's ELO when they came to Detroit a few years ago. This was after he hadn't played in the US in 30 years. Even though it wasn't the original lineup, just seeing Jeff perform all their classics was unforgettable.
I just rediscovered this song in 2024. An absolute masterpiece. His voice, the lyrics, and the orchestra, Omg. I cannot get enough of this song. The emotion in his voice. WOW!!!
Disclaimer: Song will make you cry because it is well written with its melancholic melody and tone and ballad-based tempo.
Did me the first few times I heard it, the lyrics where relevant to me at the time 😊
This is my absolute favorite E.L.O. song 😍💗 still listening in 2023 😎 I had this on 8 track 💯

Jeff is my hero in many ways he got me through many tough times a few years back I was just so sad during that time
Same mate remember radio Luxembourg under my pillow music is always there when nothing else fits xx tc
I'm sorry to hear that my friend. I pray that you may find peace and joy🙏🏼 God bless bro

Jeff Lynne. One of the greatest songwriters eva. Doesn’t matter how many times you listen to this song, it does it every time❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is perfection obviously
Dang..... this brings back so many memories as a kid growing in the 70s....and I beg so much to go back to that time in music.
I was 16 when this came out and I remember late nights listening to this on AM radio...

Hello! How are You? ...
Ah yes am radio back when most people had am only
I was 13 and this was the first single I ever bought. Summer of E.L.O. and Star Wars.

Whenever I hear this song it makes me think of my kids when they were small and my late husband. Wonderful memories.
Reminds me of when I was almost an adult; 24 yo.

It's Been REAL! CONGRATULATIONS. ELO and best wishes on your 43rd! Kara
My very very very favorite ELO song ! Still play this all the time ! ❤28 in 1977 , now 74 !
Still sounds like it was written and recorded yesterday. The sound is so alive and fresh.
No, it really doesn’t. It still sounds VERY MUCH of the late 70’s.
2023 and still rocking to ELO!!
I adore this song. Cried to this many times when I was a young girl and some lil nimrod kid had just broke my heart.
Oh OOh tellyphone line, give me some time I’m living in twilight.

I get chills during the "I look into the sky.." and "And I wonder why.." portions of the song. Every. Damn. Time.

Yes, the music is beautiful on this song. I like the verses & the bridge especially-the strings right before the chorus.

I loved this song then, and more so now!

Los 70s fueron los mejores años de música de verdad en todo el sentido de la palabra, lástima que ya no hay música así en estos tiempos
Jeff Lynne is what would have happened if the Beatles somehow had a child together, and he inherited all of their best traits and talents.
ELO is the brain child of The Move, not the Beatles.
Lennon said ELO is what the Beatles would've sounded like if they'd stayed together.
