In the early 1970s, I used to drive a lorry taking veg from Cornwall to London markets such as Covent Garden, Borough, and Spitalfields, then bring Russian Moskvich cars back. The lorry and trailer were awkward to manoeuvre through Borough Market, so I used to unhitch the trailer and leave it out in the road, then drive the lorry inside and unload. Borough Market was an absolute favourite, because the porters used to unload the lorry - something they wouldn't dream of in other London markets. There used to be a fantastic little cafe there, run I believe by an Italian family...happy days
Both sides of my Family lived in Southwark and Bermondsey from the at least the 1800s. My Mum's Dad (born in 1902) was an ARP in WW2 and witnessed the bombing of London Bridge Station. My Dad;'s Dad was a Coster Monger on East Lane.
The Borough Market is an exceptional place where flavours from around the world blend with the essence of local cuisine. Among its delights, Argentine empanadas stand out as one of the most memorable dishes I've tasted. This historic market in the heart of London awakens the senses with its variety of aromas, colours, and sounds, offering an unparalleled gastronomic experience. Argentine empanadas, with their crispy crust and juicy filling, are a must-try for food enthusiasts looking to delight their palates with the best of international cuisine
As frequent visitors, (not as frequent as we would like to be)to London borough market is my families, favorite market. We literally grocery shop there, because we like to actually rent flats and not deal with hotels, we like to feel like and live like locals and we rather shop locally, and with people that actually work and live in London. With that said the pie and mash up and the cheese toasty guys are our favorites.
I used to work at the Golden Hinde Museum which borders the northern tip of the Market. One of the things I miss most from working there is being able to have a completely different meal for lunch every day, the variety of foods there can’t be understated.
I worked at Bridge House and spent many lunchtimes enjoying the various pubs in the area. As an aside my father's firm built St Thomas's Hospital and i worked on it at a weekend. As a Cooper my warrant goes back to 1439.
I'm often told that London is an expensive place to take a break! My take on it is; stay at a budget hotel, eat at Borough Market, visit a free museum and soak up the atmosphere of the city! Is it really going to break the bank!
I love me some Borough Market. When I miss London (which is frequent), the market is one of the first places I think of. Such a beautiful place… and the doughnuts from Bread Ahead are a religious experience!
G'day Rob , thanks for the memories i used to work at the borough Market in the 70s . I used to do the night shift , unloaded a few tons of spud at Lee's stand . No fork lifts then all un loading was done by hand . Ccrickey it was frezzing cold in the winter , nets of cabbages werefrozen togather . The market in spring smelt great with all the soft fruits . Sometimes we used to see Henry Cooper and his brother come in and buy vegetables. Thanks for sharing, all the best form down under mate. 👍🏼
Worked in three different offices on the edge of Borough Market. So many lunch choices. Saw Catherine Zeta Jones there while she filmed Entrapment in the late 90s, though Sean Connery wasn’t around. Another car chase around the market.
I worked in the market from the late 70’s to the mid eighties for M.Verde, it was the best veg market in London and contained the greatest characters you would ever wish to meet. A wonderful market with wonderful memories
My favorite part of Borough Market is the chocolate shop at Rabot 1745. If you're a chocolate lover then your nose will lead you there. They grow cacao on their own farms, roast it and conch it on site, and make a variety of chocolate products. Go there and order a cup of hot chocolate made from the chocolate liquor they process on site. The chocolate alone is worth the trip!
In the sixties, I used to help my brother in law deliver fruit and veg into the London Markets from Kent. All the good quality produce went into either the original Covent Garden or Spitalfields, the not so good stuff went into the rabbit waren that was Borough Market
I don't even consider if I'm interested in the subject matter before clicking a RobsLondon video! It always is, no matter what you are talking about. Glad you are sponsored now. Much deserved! We visited the market last September on our family holiday to London. Among other places which we enjoyed around London we absolutely loved Borough market and area around it, it is an absolute must-see for any visitor to the city. So many things to see and food to eat, you could keep going there every day in fact.
It was a more fun day out when you were allowed to take your Cow in the pub. I wonder how long after they put cattle tie posts in, that someone invented a Cow parking meter?
My grandfather was tasked in around 1930 to take a model ship from the market or a shop near by which had been purchased by his employer the Cory Wright family. He was one of their drivers and took the model to Brancaster on the north Norfolk coast where the Cory Wrights had a home. This model is still on show, it forms part of the signage for the Ship public house in Brancaster.

Excellent as ever great video, the diverse street food stalls have to be sampled tall order for one visit, so it draws you back again and again. Keep them coming Rob
It took another change around 2000 when the number of ready-to-eat stalls started to increase and it became a grazing market My own favourite stall is the mushroom shop which has a wide variety of wild mushrooms many of which you will never see in supermarkets. And also because they are not force grown have flavour. When I worked in Cannon Street we always used to go to the Market Porter for Friday lunchtime pint.

Having seen this video when it first appeared I was eager to visit the market on my first foray into the big scary city of London. I expected to see the bustling crowd and to sample some of the food and drink. What I found could have passed for an old-west ghost town (except for the architecture). I'd guess that there were perhaps 20 people in the whole area and except for me most of them appeared to be workmen of some sort or other. Is there some reason that it should have been so on the 16th of October?
I visit London two times a year, from Norway, your films make my visits even better. Every time i come to Borough Market I am just overwhelmed, unable to pick anything 😂
@@Robslondon maybe you need to do a video on Londons remaining pie and mash shops. They're disappearing slowly but surely. My favourite was Cookes on Goldhawk Road (of Quadrophenia fame). 👍
Rob just a quick question: Why do you sell your products through Etsy? and why do they come all the way from LATVIA? So you end up paying over £16 for a mug! 😳🤷♂️
They take care of all of the factory stuff, printing, packing and so on- things which I simply don’t have the facilities to do. If there was a cheaper way of doing it I would; believe me I don’t make much profit on them. If you know of another provider who will do the same for a better price please let me know.
I really appreciate that mate- believe me, I know they’re expensive but the process requires several stages which, as I say, I can’t do from home (it’s done through Printful, they have several factories in Europe) If I find a cheaper provider of if anyone can recommend one I’ll be there! Stay well 😉
Sorry it’s annoying Joanne, but it’s my livelihood. Making videos is now my main source of income: I have bills to pay, so please forgive me if that means inconveniencing you with an advert or sponsor here and there. I'd guess that there were perhaps 20 people in the whole area and except for me most of them appeared to be workmen of some sort or other. Is there some reason that it should have been so on the 16th of October?
That’s a shame… sounds like the market was closed that day?
Cheer~~~a town or district that is an administrative unit. ^^
🤔
The first station in the area stopped at Spa Road not London Bridge
Well, you know what I mean….
And London Bridge is in a suburban place today..
I visit London two times a year, from Norway, your films make my visits even better. Every time i come to Borough Market I am just overwhelmed, unable to pick anything 😂
Thank you so much Ronny! It’s kind comments such as yours which keep me going.
That was the cutest emBEDded ad ever.
😂
The pie and mash stall is not what youd expect. No licquer when we went and they only took cards. Very disapointing. ☹️
Yes, you need a proper old school pie and mash shop for that 😉
@@Robslondon maybe you need to do a video on Londons remaining pie and mash shops. They're disappearing slowly but surely. My favourite was Cookes on Goldhawk Road (of Quadrophenia fame). 👍
@@TheCardiganR I have considered it, so stay tuned ;-)
Rob just a quick question: Why do you sell your products through Etsy? and why do they come all the way from LATVIA? So you end up paying over £16 for a mug! 😳🤷♂️
They take care of all of the factory stuff, printing, packing and so on- things which I simply don’t have the facilities to do.
If there was a cheaper way of doing it I would; believe me I don’t make much profit on them.
If you know of another provider who will do the same for a better price please let me know.
Yes i understand Rob, sorry about that but i got a bit of a shock lol 😂 i’m still going to order one though for Christmas 🎄 Thanks 😊 u
I really appreciate that mate- believe me, I know they’re expensive but the process requires several stages which, as I say, I can’t do from home (it’s done through Printful, they have several factories in Europe)
If I find a cheaper provider of if anyone can recommend one I’ll be there! Stay well 😉
what was the computer game (like GTA0 where you had to pick up a car / start at Borough market ?
The Getaway?
@@Robslondon that's the one Rob! thanks for the reply and all your great videos.
@@joe2grand Anytime! And thanks for the kind words.
👍
The Mudlark.
Nice pub, yes.
It's the British Disneyland full of tourists and pickpockets, is just waste of time but I suppose tourists have plentiful
Fair enough... I hope you enjoyed hearing about its long history though.
@@Robslondon of course excellent job 👌 👏
Thank you 🙂@@LondonPower
That advert…🥴🥴🥴
This channel is now my livelihood.
Advertising pays my bills and enables these videos to be made.
@@Robslondon Yeah I completely get that but it was a bit too cringe for me. Sorry…
@@arthunter92 That's ok. I'd rather not have to do it but, as I say, it's my livelihood.
@@Robslondon Fair play. Do genuinely love your videos though…
@@arthunter92 Thanks ;-)
What is with the ad?? Love how you pulled it together with your work but was annoying…will skip next time lol
Sorry it’s annoying Joanne, but it’s my livelihood.
Making videos is now my main source of income: I have bills to pay, so please forgive me if that means inconveniencing you with an advert
or sponsor here and there.
Without ads or sponsors there would be no videos.
Thanks for watching though and stay well 😉
I will keep watching because you are so good at them and interesting ❤
@@Robslondon Do you still work as a cabbie too? I sometimes think you'll give me a ride on a London holiday and I'd know you by your voice 😄 I'd get a kick out of that
@@joannewendt1792 Thanks for your understanding Joanne 🙂 Stay well.
@@Sgirl I'm still licensed, but this is pretty much my main work now! ;-)
Another entertaining informative vid but didn’t like having to wait out the ad in the middle. 🫤
Thanks arriesone... this is becoming my main livelihood though- without the ads, I wouldn't be able to make videos.
Totally understandable
@@Robslondon Ah Rob, I’m all for them then, wouldn’t want to be without your fantastic videos!
@@arriesone1 You can hit fast forward through them. No need to wait it out if it bothers you that much.
@@Robslondon I didn't mind the ad at all if it means that you're getting properly paid for making such brilliant content. These videos are such a highlight to me as a Londoner, it's vital that we support creatives so we can still enjoy their work - London isn't a cheap city to live in!
