    Yayyy you made an appearance!
    Siloé I think I speak for most of us but I really believe if you started submitting your videos to different garden magazines or cable channels you'd have a good chance of getting your own spot. Both the talent and Info is there. And I already feel like I'm watching a professional production that's been boot-legged onto youtube.
    Keep it going man, its only up from here :]

      I totally agree. Your videos are a treat for me and my family to watch. Even though I am passed the beginning gardenerer stage there are always nuggets of new information and ideas that I learn from watching your videos. I highly encourage all gardeners of all experience levels to watch and observe all farmers because the common exchange or knowledge is extremely important.

      Thanks Doug! I really happy to know that you and your family are enjoying the videos. It can be challenging to produce content that is interesting to both season gardeners and beginners alike. But as you said we can all learn from each other. UA-cam is a great community.

    Another great video. I left my lettuce to bolt last season, but it seemed to take a little long developing seeds and I needed the space for other veggies. For the viewer with the terrace, maybe try growing more crops vertically? Things like tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and a lot more love climbing and this can free up your raised bed for other crops. Please keep the videos coming.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  9 років тому

      Bryan Wickizer Thanks! Even though a bolting lettuce does take valuable space, at least you get hundreds of seed from one plant. The vertical growing tip is a great one. Thanks for mentioning that. I'll keep the videos coming!

    Nice video on the lettuce. :) I may have a hard time growing it here in Texas unless I get a heat resistant variety like you mentioned.
    As for the person who asked the question and your reply that growing potatoes might not be feasible in a small area. Actually potatoes are very easy to grow in a tiny space if you grow up instead of out. I even know some people who stacked several automobile tires and filled them with dirt to grow their potatoes. When they wanted potatoes they just removed a tire, brushed the soil aside and there were the potatoes.
    That said I have never put that into practice myself. Not big on potatoes in my family really. If we crave them it is rare and in that case I just buy some. If you didn't want to use tires you could easily build a container with removable sections to grow the potatoes that way.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  9 років тому +1

      BlackCat2 That is a very good tip Heidi. Potatoes and roots in general are great crops for getting the most calories out of small spaces. And sweet potatoes are even better yielders in hot climates. As for the feasibility of feeding 7 people with 1200sq feet, I think it would be hard or impossible. If I remember correctly, Jon Jeavons says that 1/8 acre per person would be the minimum. If would be interesting to see experiment on this though. Thank you very much for your comment!

    My friend I believe the latest research indicates it's not the heat rather the sun exposure that causes bolting. Shading does cool it however the reduction in solar energy is the cause of delay.
    Fantastic episode ! I have failed years in a row to get leafy greens to successfully grow.

    • @suburbanhomestead

      ***** The more I learn :-) Thanks for the correction. I hope you get better luck with the greens.

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden 9 років тому +1

      suburban homestead Its not so much a correction rather a clarification. the statement is valid however with heat usually comes higher solar exposure. You know I am stubborn ;) ill try again!

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  9 років тому +1

      This gives me the idea for an experiment, where I plant lettuce during summer and shade it out with a dark cloth for a few hours in the morning to see it bolting slower compared to a control.
      As for being stubborn, every good gardener has to be a bit. :-)

    Great information for seed saving! I love that you pointed out to be careful of other plants in the same family which my be flowering when you plan to collect and save the seed. This is often skimmed over or not mentioned at all in most seed saving videos. Also, I have excellent results with a heat tolerant variety of lettuce called Green Star. It has a wonderful texture and flavor with a bright green, solid color. I highly recommend it. :) My other varieties will bolt when it is still producing beautifully. Here is a link to where you can purchase the seeds: www.highmowingseeds.com/organic-non-gmo-seeds-Green-Star-Lettuce.html

      Rainbow Gardens Very true. I find that while accidental crossings may be fun, they are not always practical, since getting a stable and good new variety takes some patience. Thanks for the lettuce variety link. I will be adding it to my list.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  9 років тому +1

      Urban Organic For Life Julian, There is a free version of photoshop called Gimp, but I think it is a bit more challenging to work with. You could also go completely old school and make them by hand with brightly colored paper and paint, or markers, and then photograph them from a straight an angle as you can with good lighting and use the photo. The important thing is to make them simple, brightly colored, with the most contrast you can. But do not use all colors at once. Pick a predominant color and a secondary contrasting color. Don't put too many items in it, otherwise things get crowded. One nice large item with good high contrast is preferred. But above all be creative and have fun. I hope that helps.
